I am totally on board with unions for residents. It makes no sense in regard to patient safety to keep residents working outrageous hours.

Wow, the toenail story took me back to one of my own injuries... i was 11 and on vacation with my family at Cedar Point. Going back to our hotel room from the pool I opened the door and lifted my R great toe nail from the nail bed. Had to go to the local ER and they pulled out the nail and placed like a piece of aluminum foil with a few stitches to make sure the nail grew back evenly 😬

The work hour rules went into effect during my residency. We did at times blow through the 80 hours, as I’m sure everyone did/does at some points. I’m a general pediatrician but came very close to doing Peds cardiology. Good luck to Dr. BenDavid!

In Brazil the intern year is part of the med school. Once you go into residency it’s already fully immersive in the chosen specialty. Of course you still can rotate in some other areas, depending on what’s your specialty. As an anesthesiology resident I went through ICU, emergency and pulmonary functional lab rotations.

Free (auto) parking is a subsidy to those who keep using autos in the face of climate change. At places like UCLA, it also turns precious land that could be used for housing people (like med students, residents) over to housing autos. Instead unions should fight for good pay. Then those who choose to take sustainable transit (cycling, pubtrans) share in the benefits and those who prefer to keep driving can pay something closer to the true cost of driving. Another odd thing about medicine - often the people who advise you to exercise more are working out of buildings that have more auto parking than accessible cycle parking. The union can advocate for more accessible cycle infrastructure and for subsidized or free pubtrans and carpooling. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gAMtKMz6Av0.html

Good ideas that may be practical in urban environments, but not so in rural ones. Also a bit ableist.

@@daniellebrackett4905 I am disabled, including disabilities that affect my mobility. Some disabled people can cycle when there is accessible infrastructure for doing so - which most medical campuses lack. THAT is something unions could change with their contracts. Furthermore, there's nothing ableist about saying the push should be for good pay - which people can then decide to use either to pay for parking or to use for carpooling or public transit or cycling. Additionally, those with qualifying mobility disabilities have disabled licenses and placards and at least in California (which is where Harbor UCLA and its union are located) are not charged at all for parking in disabled spaces. Again, somewhere where unions could be making a difference would be in fighting the systemic ableism within medicine and lobbying that more "normal" parking places be re-striped to create more disabled parking. You seem to equate parking not being free for everyone (in lieu of pay that is good enough that people can afford parking fees) with being ableist. Legally blind folks cannot drive, which means the free parking would be subsidizing abled drivers and blind folks who use public transit and/or paratransit are paying out of pocket still. The more equitable solution is to work for higher pay, which workers can put towards their chosen mode of transit.

@@spidrawebster you projected things into my short comment that I did not say. I did not say I disagreed whatsoever, just pointing out that the practical application of your ideas would be more difficult in certain areas and for certain people. That's really it. Not here to argue, just adding insight.

Not to minimize his reasons for going back to Israel, but med school cost must have played a big role.
