United States Marine Recon | Force Recon, Division Recon | 2022
Force Reconnaissance is one of the United States Marine Corps' special operations capable forces which supplies military intelligence to the command element of the Marine Air-Ground Task Force.
The United States Marine Corps Reconnaissance Battalions (or commonly called Marine Division Recon) are the Special Operations Capable reconnaissance assets of Marine Air-Ground Task Force that provide division-level ground and amphibious reconnaissance to the Ground Combat Element within the United States Marine Corps. Division reconnaissance teams are employed to observe and report on enemy activity and other information of military significance in close operations.

Being a Force Recon Marine was he best experience of my life. I spent over a year with 5th Force at Del Mar in Pendleton all of 1967 and went to jump school, dive school, amphibious recon school with lots of swimming, rubber boat training, jumping (fixed wing, helicopter, night jumps, water jumps) sub training, rappelling. All of this prepared me for my tour in Vietnam in 68-69 with 1st Recon Bn. Absolutely the most exciting time of my life and I'm now 74.

I had the pleasure to work with Marine Force Recon in the early 80's I was an army grunt. Never been around Seals but worked alot with Special Forces they were a joy to work with and professionals that knew their shit. But the Recon really left an impression on me, like special forces it's not about the Rambo aspect these guys are seriously intelligent individuals. I mean sure you can do the physical training but the amount of training and schooling that you have to do and comprehend and pass is unbelievable. I remember talking to them in the field and a lot of their equipment they bought themselves at mountaineering shops or Cabelas because that gear was better than military issue, we worked together on a big 45 day field exercise in Germany the leader said he had to call HQ in the states to verify something one of the other recons unfolded this little metal dish thing and he actually called and talked to his HQ in the US this was like 82 so I was dumbfounded never seen anything like that, anyway those Recon guys were really good.

He was honorably discharged from the marine corps when he was in California getting ready to go to Vietnam when he received a call that both his parents were killed in a car wreck. A tractor trailer hit them. He had 2 sisters to take care of. He was stationed at Camp Leguene before he went to CA for 2 years. When he was 63 years old he got terribly sick. He was much older than me. Anyway, it took the VA another 9 months on his death bed at the VA in Durham NC to say he had 3 of 8 diseases from benzene. He was in the hospital for 2 months from leukemia. And at last his blood platelets started going up. We fought with the VA for maybe a 1 1/2. Every time denied. Was not service connected. After his passing in2017 the supreme court came down and said my husband's death was service connected and was declared 💯 disabled. He had already passed. He sacrificed his life for America. He volunteered to go to Vietnam because he was not married and no children. Every soldier is very important to American people.

once had US recon in our country and in our 2 week exercise...they operated with us but seperatly...we consider the exercise sucess when we dont have to fire any blanks and stay below radar.... anyway....first night...orders...moving out...about 2 hours later...we hear a massive firefight and the US guys say on radio that all their ammo is depleted :D they used more ammo in first 2 hours of recon than we did in 5 years in those exercises. Other time...winter camp... 2 weeks in forrest deep snow and - 20 celcius...we had guys from Arizona...never even saw snow in their life...skiing with them was fun...and after the exercise the party was pretty rad too... most of my platoon called in sick next day because of hangovers. We gave a Mexican dude some home made strong moonshine... he didnt want it.... one of our guys asked... "are you a Mexi-can´t or Mexi-can....needless to say he chose the latter and gulped that 70% drink making nasty faces.... Fun times...

I am not a Marine. However, a lot of my friends from my youth were Marines and the Marines tried to recruit me in high school. I knew a recon Marine in 1985 and was impressed by him as an individual Marine. He explained a lot of stuff to me about the Marines and the general special operations community in the eighties. I also met a couple FORCE RECON Marines in 1988 when I was a beach lifeguard at Myrtle Beach...they were big guys who looked like they could beat the crap out of anybody. I mean anybody...civilian outlaw bikers, other Marines, they looked like they could have handled Mike Tyson if they had to. That being said, I always found the Marine Corps recon community a bit weird in the sense that they always seemed like second string to JSOC units. I always got the impression the Marine Corps leadership was very jealous of loaning out their best guys and best units to joint units like SOCOM. I also have had the impression that the Marine Corps in general never truly got focused on true special operations in the sense like JSOC or the British SAS. I dont think the Marine Corps will ever get away from their core mission...medium to large scale amphibious operations that are offensive in nature (seizing beaches held by enemy forces). Amphibious ops are the Marines creme da la creme. To me, Marine recon is like a support unit to the infantry and to the Marine high command...feeding them intel and doing special ops just for the Marine Corps high command...hence the name "FORCE" Recon. Meaning they are recon units for the Marine Amphibious Force Generals in the Fleet Marine Force. In plain English, my impression of Marine recon is, "you find'em and the Marine infantry or Marine aviation units will come kill them." Maybe things have changed with MARSOC..I dont know much about MARSOC.
@defions4208
@defions4208 Год назад
Not too far off the only thing is Marine Recon isnt apart of JSOC they are Special Missions Capable so them seeming like second string units to JSOC is because they arent under JSOC command. MARSOCs mission is much more of what you would consider "Special Operations Oriented". In my opinion Marine Recon should be under JSOC just as Green Berets/ 75th are Recon/Raiders should be aswell. It would also help a ton with funding for Recon and a lot of much needed upgrades perfect example is the Army going to the XM5 replacing the M4A1and Recon is still stuck with the m4 but are considered " special missions capable" yet they are behind Army Leg units gear and funding wise/

Our entire 6-man team had to be choppered *back* from the boat on a CH-46 to the hide site and re-trace our steps. We found it on the side of a hill where we had all ass-slid to the bottom moving to extract earlier that day. The defacto special forces under direct command of Marines HQ. The reason why this special ops capable unit isn't considered "special forces" is because it isn't under SOCOM.

It’s actually is Special Operations Capable (SOC) and yeah it’s not under SOCOM but it is a tier 3 unit.

@@kmagentbolo The reason USMC Recon does not fall into Tier 2 is simply due to it being under Marine Corps control rather than SOCOM's. Honestly the whole tier 1, 2, and 3 classifications don't matter much, there is just too many differences between each unit. Recon is tier 3, which is where all conventional U.S. forces are categorized, however, Recon's capabilities are certainly on par with the SOF units.
