I'm a little late to the party for this Nisi 49mm close-up lens review, but that does mean I've had much longer to play with it and here are my thoughts on this new close-up lens for macro photography.

Thanks for this. Looks good, just wondered if youve compared it to the DCR 250?

@@StewartWoodArt Good news. I use a Pope Shield diffuser so am interested in the comparison too. Is there a filter thread on the front of the Nisi to accomodate my diffuser's threaded adaptor?

Nicely done, Stewart. NiSi does make good tech. I picked this up a few months ago when a NiSi rep hosted an event at a local camera store here in Los Angeles, on the west coast of the colonies 😉 But haven't had time to go out & use it! This year's been a duality of record-breaking rains and now high heat.

Also curious how this compares to the Raynox DCR 250. I currently have the Raynox and I'm wondering if this would be an upgrade in either magnification or quality of glass.

Is the 58mm version of this better for the laowa 100mm 2.8 on canon r6? 77mm might be the best? but it's double the price.
@dougsmit1
@dougsmit1 9 месяцев назад
My opinion: It is not a matter of better or worse but what fits your shooting style. Most people probably should get the 58mm NiSi first but I wanted the 77mm to use on the RF100-400 to provide greater working distance rather than a closer close-up which I already had covered otherwise. It is possible with any close up device to have a gap between the closest you can get with the bare lens and the farthest with the accessory. That depends a lot on how much focus extension is provided by the lens itself. Maro lenses have a lot and the 2:1 Laowas are a lot less likely to run into this problem than are kit zooms that a lot of people want to make into macros. I decided to skip the 58mm and get the 49mm and the 77mm since those two give the extremes I needed allowing for the tubes etc. that I also have. Macro can become addictive. I have too many ways of getting too close.
@dougsmit1
@dougsmit1 Год назад
Good video but I regret that you have no longer zooms to try. I am currently shooting bees on flowers with a Canon RF100-400 f/5.6-8 lens which offers class leading close focus without accessories but I need extension tubes if shooting anything smaller than a bumblebee size insect. What would be the effect of the NiSi 49mm using the 67mm adapter ring supplied on that lens? If, as you say, you get more magnification from a longer length and considering the glass on that lens is somewhat smaller than the 67mm threads, it seems that the problem would be whether the vignetting at 400mm would be offensive. I find no one that has addressed this question. Using tubes, there is next to no depth of field with this lens. The goal is to be as far as possible from the subject still being able to get a reasonably large frame fill. Would the NiSi improve my situation or would the vignetting just mean I am better off just cropping the image as shot? Liked and subscribed.

With not having that lens to test I would be guessing, but I think it would work great. I have used it on a 200mm 1:1 lens and it gave me a 3:1 magnification.

I bought it. It was disappointing with the 100-400 but did work on the R7 18-150mm kit lens giving over 1:1 but at too close a working distance to be good in the field. I have ordered a 49-58 ring so I can use it on my Canon EF 100mm macro. I am mystified why NiSi packaged this item with the 62 and 67mm rings rather than things closer to the 49mm size. What lenses were they thinking users would be using?

@@dougsmit1 Isn't the Canon EF 100mm macro lens a 67mm filter thread size? Also how did the Nisi 49mm lens go with your canon 100mm macro lens? what was the IQ like, any vignetting or any issues?
@dougsmit1
@dougsmit1 9 месяцев назад
The EF100 that takes 67mm is the latest L version with IS. I have the old non-IS version which is 58mm. Both the 49mm and 77mm NiSi work fine on the 100 macro but the zoom was less pleasing at 400, I suspect, because the very high magnification meant there was nothing in focus unless you used a very finely spaced focus stack using the Canon focus bracketing routine in the RP or R7. Diffraction is a killer at this range even at f/8. I do wonder how it would work with a WeMacro or Miops rail or other auto advancing system but it pushes the limits of practicality in the field. My best results came from the 77mm on the 100mm macro and the 49mm on the Laowa 85mm. Both of those required anh adapter not packaged with the lenses but that is minor. However, this may be as much of a factor of my shortcomings as a fair report on the glass involved. I continue to play with them and may do better with time and a few thousand shots.

@@dougsmit1ohhh that explains it, I was looking at mine and I’m like mine says 67mm that’s why I was confused. What’s the minimum focusing distance like when you attach the 77 vs the 49, how much closer do you find yourself to your subjects? Do you lose any stops of light when they’re in use? Yeah practice makes perfect! I’m still learning and getting into macro

Thank you, I appreciate you reviewing this close up lens, however I think you've got too bogged down in 35mm equivalences. To be honest, as I M43 user I really couldn't care less what it looks like on a 35mm sensor. I want to know what it's like on a M43 sensor camera. I had to rewatch the M43 section a few times because it confused the hell out of me before it dawned that you are trying to fiddle with it to shoe horn it into a 35mm context which it doesn't need to be.. A M43 sensor is 17.5mm wide, so a 1:1 image will show 17.5mm as this magnifications means that the object being imaged should be the same size as the image projected onto the sensor. You showed a 35mm wide image which means that that shot would have been at 1:2 as it is twice the width of the sensor. With the extension lens installed giving 2:1 then the image should show a smidge over 8mm, but you show 15mm which is a 1:1 magnification. With the main lens at 2:1 magnifiation it should have been 8.5mm but you showed 17mm . For a 3x magnification the image should have been showing 6mm not 12mm. The fact that the crop sensor is a smaller sensor and crops into the image circle of the lens gives a percieved magnification imcrease, but thats because of the crop factor is a property of the sensor size. The magnification of the lens is a property of the lens not the sensor and doesn't change because of the sensor. I have a sigma 105mm 1:1x lens on a Vitrox EF-M1 smart adapter to my Olympus e-m1 mark II. By itself I get 17.5mm of my tape measure in the frame, with a 1.4x tc I get 12.5mm in frame and with a 2x tc I get 8.5mm of the tape in frame. Sure if I mount it on my Canonb 6d I get 35mm in shot by itself, 25mm with the 1.4x TC and 12.5mm with the 2x tc. However the Olympus and Canon are 2 totally different systems.
