Today, I'm talking about what comes in the box when you order a Lensun hood mounted solar panel for your vehicle. Mine is for a Nissan Frontier, but they have a ton of different vehicles that they make panels for so check out the link below to find the right one for your application.
This is a great, simple to install addition to any Overlanding or camping vehicle, so I hope the info is helpful! I'll have a video coming soon showing the install so check out the channel for that!

I'm a big solar panel fan. I have a a similar system and love it!

After having a big bulky panel strapped to the hood of my old Xterra, I loved the benefits of the solar, but not that form factor. On the new truck, that old solar panel is on the roof and this one should be much better on the hood. Can't wait to get it installed!

OK I will help with this question. I live in Washington state and put this panel on last year On my Nissan Xterra color is black and it’s completely gone through the summer and winter and now spring was absolutely no problems. The only thing that I highly recommend that you get M3 windshield sealant all the way around the solar panel. To prevent water from getting under the solar panel Mine is still going strong it will even charge on a summer night with a bright moonlight to.

Great tip! I'll definitely do that just to be safe. Thanks!

Where is you’re auxiliary battery mounted?

I built a shelf behind my driver seat and mounted my slide out fridge on that plus my REDARC power management system and the battery is strapped down beneath that fridge shelf. I made a video that shows the shelf and the battery later went right below it if it's helpful. Here's a link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iZ7oHYZfbaU.html

How washable are these solar panels? In the Northwest, my property is wall to wall messy fir trees, including pitch dripping and also messy alders at the creek. Same or similar at most places I go. So far, I've not gotten anything that I cannot fold up and put away, assuming I can find the sun and keep moving my panels. Pitch is often a bugger to get off even the car. In spring, the yellow pollen off the trees makes a mess also. In winter, no pitch, but also no sun. I assume most solar these days are waterproof, but there was a time when they weren't. Also, in winter, the road crews spread the little pea-gravel on the mountains for other cars to throw all over, not sure how solar would hold up on the hood. Is this a silly question?
@AllThingsOverlanding
@AllThingsOverlanding Год назад
Not silly at all! So this panel seems to be made of sort of a softer plastic type material so I would think if you got sap and stuff on it, it would be tough to clean off. My other solar panel is more of a glass coated solar panel and I’ve had that on the roof of my truck and on the hood of my old Xterra and never gotten any chips and never had any problems cleaning it off. I think with some warm, soapy water you could about get anything off either one though.

A few years ago, Zamp were about the only waterproof, but it makes sense that had to change. One never knows where the pitch will fall. I'm not lucky. I was going up to Mount St. Helens and stayed in a woodsy campground, sat down on a big rock, and egad, right in a huge glob of pitch. At least I had extra clothes. I spread a tarp over my trailer. Going to Eastern Oregon and Washington, solar is much more useful.

@@WildcatPhoto Ugh, sitting in pitch sounds pretty awful, haha. Here in the flatlands of IN the solar is pretty amazing. Just parking it in my driveway or at a campsite, I can pretty much keep my batteries topped off indefinitely. No worries of a dead battery or things not operating because they've run out of juice.

The solar panel is very easy to clean. One thing do not put car wax on the solar panel. It will not help it. It already has a silicone clearcoat on it

Any info on if we wanted to plug this panel itself into our Blueitti without the controller. Like would that be possible. We normally run our fridge off the vehicle power while driving and when we get to camp we plug the fridge into the Blueitti.
@AllThingsOverlanding
@AllThingsOverlanding Год назад
As long as your Bluetti accepts a set of MC4 plugs (which I haven't seen before) or if you had some sort of adapter (I found this one that takes MC4 and converts it to an 8mm plug: amzn.to/3LccItP) then that might work. You could also definitely use the solar to charge up your starter battery and keep the Bluetti plugged in through your DC plug during the day and just unplug the Bluetti at night for running the fridge. I'm sure there are a few ways to make it work, but it might take some creativity, :D.

oh this is going to be great video (posting comment at 0:33 seconds in). I have the Cascadia4x4 90W version for my XTERRA.

I'm psyched to have solar on my starter battery again. Hoping to grab some shop time in the next month or so to get it warm enough to install. More info to come once I get it in and start using it!

Nice vid Fletch. For myself, in case anyone else reads these comments, I extend the wire from the load (lightbulb) on the MPPT CC to a 12v outlet in the cab to plug my Jackery onto that and the fridge, or the electric blanket too, onto it to have an unswitched/always-on outlet that will be turned off if the battery gets too low. And that's my "dual battery" setup on the "cheap"
@MauroMarzorati
@MauroMarzorati Год назад
oh one more tip. If you get a Y-splitter on the MC-4 connectors, then you can supplement the solar panel input with another source. For myself, I found that an old Thinkpad power supply I had laying around puts out 90W at around 20VDC, so I made a (cig lighter, male) plug that I can plug into a female socket hanging off my front fascia so the battery gets "solar" when the truck is parked in the garage. So yeah, my XTERRA is a plug-in (on-or-off-road) hybrid :-)
