In the first video I showed you how to set up your boat, lines, rigs, rods, etc. to troll for School Mackerel in Moreton Bay. In this video I talk about finding them, take you through the areas that I tried before I finally found the mother load and give a few valuable tips throughout the video.
I now get all my trolling boards from Mr Bait:

I learn something every time I see your videos, thank you again. The bag limits are set to maintain the fishery and I always reckon if you bag out on one trip it makes up for the times you don't do so well. I am in my 70's and its iteresting to see how the trends change. In the old days we used lead lines to get down to the fish, on handlines of course. Remember the wonder wobblers?Then the planing boards came into fashion in th 70's. Then the bibbed deep diving lures became popular and here you are doing well with the spoons and planing boards again. What's next? A great vid, thanks again.

Thank you. I'm glad I can teach you something new. I use the planar boards because the work well for me, I haven't done so well on the hard body lures, I get teeth marks on them but so far no hook ups. Not that I try them very often, I usually tend to stick with what I know works well for me.

I moved to QLD 8 years ago and I have only learned this year that they are not a spring fish. I've got the yellow plastic paravanes, hope they work. Thanks for your videos, they're very informative and helpful.
@weFishAU

Other people have a lot of success with the yellow delta shaped paravanes. Personally, I have done a lot better with the surfboard like planer boards. I think the main reason is that I just haven't rigged the paravanes correctly. Once I got the surfboard shaped planer boards running right, I gave up on the paravanes. Glad you found the video helpful.

Nice session mate, very informative, so far all my paravane trollings have only resulted in griners, haha, kind of gave up on this method a

Thank you. I had the same problem when I first started. Maybe try Spero's advice, either bring them a bit closer to the boat or adjust them to run deeper. Another option is to get a pre-rigged board from Mr Bait, they are set correctly and ready to troll.

Good Video(s), I enjoyed your commentary very much too. Can you recommend a map that shows the locations where you are fishing? I lost my 'Beacon to Beacon' in the floods a year ago and I haven't managed to find a replacement since. Maybe it's out of print.

Thank you, much appreciated. I am pretty sure you can still buy a paper copy at your local bait and tackle shop. Buy really, save yourself some money and download a free copy to your computer and/or smartphone. www.msq.qld.gov.au/beacon-to-beacon-guides Navionics has a good app for finding fishing spots in the bay and offshore. There is a free version at webapp.navionics.com/ but you can buy a paid subscription and get more detailed maps on your smart phone. Then there is the program I am developing called FishTrax which shows a lot of what I do. It doesn't show depths over the entire bay as with Navionics but we are trying to close the gap. fishtrax.we-fish.com.au

Wy did you give up on the Raymarine Axiom? just the auto pilot? Im looking at a Axiom+9rv with a rv100 If I was going to get the pro I probably would pick another brand, Will it be ok offshore up to 100M? i was also considering a garmin UHD2 95sv with either a gt51 or gt 56 transducer? any thoughts you have for me would be welcomed..I suppose max I will fish offshore 150M
@weFishAU
@weFishAU Год назад
Mainly the autopilot. I was really annoyed with the company attitude. Lo and behold, not long after I committed to change for a Furuno with a sensible autopilot, Raymarine decided to change their policy. The sounder aspect of it is great in the bay. It is good offshore but fish detection ability is dropping off before 100m. It's a function of transducer frequency as well as power. I fitted an Airmar 265LH for the deeper water and it worked fine on the Axiom. It is now connected to my Furuno and working equally well. The RV-100 is great in shallower conditions but the B56 that I have on the Furuno is better at greater depths (lower frequency and a bit more power). Conversely the RV-100 does give a clearer image in shallower water, but so long as I can identify fish, the clarity of the image doesn't matter a lot. I think you will be happy with the Raymarine Axiom overall, but you may need to add a 1Kw CHIRP transducer to reliably see fish in deeper water. I think only the pro version will accept a 1Kw transducer without an additional black box. You might want to check that with Raymarine, but I think that is correct.

Nice video, I’ve got one of the white ones that you use but when I get to 2kts it keeps popping back up to the surface. Any idea, it looks like it’s setup the same?

When did you go out? Can you catch them in winter too?
@weFishAU
@weFishAU Год назад
Last week. You can catch them all year round but the best time in June to November. You still have 5 months left where they will be plentiful. Next weeks episode will cover whatever I have forgotten to mention so far as well as pointing out the areas that I know to produce.
