I filmed this video like three weeks ago but I didn't have the time to edit it until now! Thank you so much to everyone who put stuff in this box! And if you would like to send me more stuff, that's OK! I'm good on stuff right now!!!
Often times people forget that the whole family is affected when there are medical issues. It is so nice to see things sent to his family. Support people need appreciation and support too :)
Funny to hear Hank call the JPL mission pins "merch!" They are issued internally to celebrate mission milestones. There are a few types of pins for sale in the JPL store (Artemis, JPL, NASA, Mars2020), but most pins/patches are for JPLers only. Glad you liked them!
Wondering how much NASA could do with the pin budget the American people are paying for? Tax paid flair 🤦♂️ And before anyone says anything, that money could be going to cancer research instead of the expensive equivalent of a gold star sticker for someone doing their job. Just being rational. Little things add up. Good luck Hank!!!! Nothing but positive vibes and well wishes to you and yours through this💜✊️🤙
And Hank knows exactly how to receive handmade clothing! Touch it, say "wow", and immediately put it on. If he has yarn people in his life, they've trained him well. 🧶💞
They didn’t make me jealous enough to ever want cancer, but damn, fk cancer in binary around the neck, an octopus cuddling your noggin with its tentacles looking like PHENOMENAL dreads… envyyyyy. It is a TOTAL SKA hat, too, with the big pouch in the back… our ska punk Hank has been wholly revived just as the cancer has been thoroughly fkd as the scarf crafter willed it to fk off and die already. Freaking gorgeous masterful crafting!
If anyone who sent something to Hank is reading through these comments, I hope you know that your kindness was something that made my day. What a thoughtful bunch of people you are. Hank, I hope you and your family enjoy all the lovely things.
I liked it too, but I've got an itty-bitty burst bubble here only because I've been looking for an address, even asked on the last video where to send this little thing I made for Hank, and the very next video is asking us NOT to send more stuff. Nevertheless, this was downright heartwarming to see!!
A nice box, opened by a nice man, sat upon a nice floor. For real, big respect for how well you've tackled the terrible blight that is cancer. Keep at it, Hank. We're all wanting to see you thrive. c:
Hank noticing that the star blanket has constellations but did he notice they were DINOSAUR CONSTELLATIONS!! Man what an amazing gift box, good work Nerdfighters!
Wow it's so lovely that you sent that to Hank. It's kind and thoughtful of you to send something, and honestly even though the gift wasn't for me, I appreciate it. Hank, John, and this community have meant a lot to me since I first started watching vlogbrothers in 2009, and I'm just so grateful that this community (and the world) have compassionate people who show their care so freely ❤
You and your colleagues are fabulous! The sheer thoughtfulness that went into that gift box shows what a kind bunch you are. Much love and respect from the UK 🇬🇧💕
Hi Hank!! As someone who collects lots and lots of pins, I have a DIY suggestion for displaying them in your office- you can get a 10” embroidery wheel and a T-shirt and tighten the fabric. Then you can cut off the excess shirt, and BOOM- you can really easily add your collection of pins and just hang it up through the little hole embroidery screw. I have three separate embroidery hoops (two 10” and one 4” hoop) covered with 52 pins in my room and it’s one of my favorite decorations!
Fantastic idea, and a great upcycle use for an old t-shirt that doesn't fit anymore. Might do this myself with some of my pins, I currently have them all on a jean jacket but I just don't wear that jacket much.
@@northstarjakobs Thanks, I’m glad you like the idea!! Its a fun craft imo- you get to tell a story with the pins and can make patterns or designs with the pins too- whatever you like! I got tired of losing or having to re-pin my pins to bags and jackets, so I decided to hang them up!
I cannot get over the immense amount of love expressed through this box. The binder alone must have taken so much time and effort and dedication. Hank you have made such an amazing impact on so so so many people. We love you and yours so much.
Someone knit him a scarf that says "F--k Cancer" in binary code! (actually, maybe crochet?). People sat there for hours making him presents. It's so very sweet. Home made presents are the best. Those patches and pins are for people involved in missions; they aren't sold. There's a finite amount as far as I know and they gave them to Hank. Lovely.
The socks were a great idea. Many people get very cold but especially their feet, while getting chemo (hence why many chemo blankets are made and why some have foot pockets). Also, summer or not, those places are usually freezing.
my science teacher loves you, and is constantly showing your videos in class. she completly gave up on the unit she was teaching when you got cancer, and started teaching us all about how cancer works instead lol
Honestly, a cancer unit would probably be a very valuable thing to have in science class! Understanding of cancer and cancer treatment seems generally very poor among most people I know (including myself), which is a big problem considering basically everybody will know someone with cancer at some point in their life, and many people will actually get cancer at some point in their lives. If you live in a place where your teacher is allowed to set her own curriculum, you should suggest to her that she incorporate a cancer unit in the future as well.
I love how all these people are expressing how much they care about you. The instinct to crochet or knit you something by hand was especially touching to see. 🥰
Hank, if all of your subscribers sent all of their love, hugs and thoughts for your journey to a full recovery, there wouldn't be a box, in the universe, large enough to hold it all!
I'm glad that a group of nerfighters got together and made you a gift box. Obviously, it would be too much if everyone made you a gift, but there are nerdfighter groups that have been around since the beginning and it's nice to have that "small world" feeling.
+++ and truly, a huge thank you to all of the members of nerdfighteria who sent media recommendations, well wishes, who organized to do healthcare related charity donations--we are so lucky to have such an amazing, compassionate, dedicated community.
"It's summertime, so I don't know if people would think, 'Why is that guy wearing a knit hat right now?'" But nobody would question you wearing a knit octopus. 😂 Did the knitters coordinate their yarns? The octopus and scarf match perfectly, and I love it. 💚
I realize this was meant to make Hank smile, but I have been grinning like an idiot the whole time and have tears in my eyes. Thank you NASA Nerdfightaria.
LPT for sticker collections. Buy a blank plastic canvas style banner to put them on. It can be hung anywhere (even on the ceiling) and rolled up and stored for safe keeping. I love that whoever put this together provided a packing list.
I'm wowed by the contributions from the yarn & needle Nerdcrafters--y'all worked astoundingly quickly, with no compromise on quality! Special recognition to the binary scarf--secret message items are so special. Kitty who sent the hats--if you see this, let us know what yarn they're made of, a knitter wants to know 😉 Hank, thank you for sharing the love with this community, may you be delighted & comforted by these gifts for years to come!
I am already a huge fan of JPL, but now? Now! NOW! I did not think I could love them and you any more than I already do. Watching this has made me so happy. I'm crying. Yay! Thanks for sharing your personal awesome for all of us for so long, but especially now through your cancer journey. 🤗🥰
You taking the time to thank everyone who sent you stuff is just... so freaking sweet! Nobody would have faulted you to have opened this gift in private. But then you shared it with all of us, AND took the time and energy to name everyone. Just another confirmation of how awesome you are.
Nerdfighteria is so full of talented, amazing nerdfighters. It's lovely to see some of their work here! And yeah, Hank, amigurumi is the japanese term for a crochet or knit friend. Amigurumi work is beautiful and can be really delicate--the artists who did those did a great job!
Hank takes off his Kraken hat to put on an ACTUAL KRAKEN HAT! Well done to the group who sent this to him. So much awesome in a box. Nerdfighteria is pulling for you, Hank!
This video has the energy of a very large and loving families “extended family” Christmas morning and the kids who are genuinely very excited and grateful for everything they get. It makes my little broken home heart sing.
Yay we're all so glad it got to you safely! Katie put SO much work into it and it's nice to see everything that was included. We love you, Hank! We're all sending positive vibes for a speedy recovery ❤
Watching you open those gifts with childlike amazement was awesome 👏 That octopus hat was the shit! You rock it well 👍🏼 Those chewy ginger candies got me through early pregnancy with twins. Hoping they work for you too!
Hey Hank, thanks for sharing with us. You've shared a lot with us over the years, and now Nerdfighteria is sharing its love for you. I hope it's helping and not making you feel like you owe us your time. Take care, dude
This is so pure and sweet. To everyone who participated in this - this was a gift to us all! Thank you. Oh but imagine being Oran and just being like ‘oh yeah nerdfighteria sent me some cool things. What do you mean everyone’s dad doesn’t have an internet following of THE best people on the planet? Huh?’
Lots of appreciation for whoever thought to add the sweet touch of making the crocheted pelican friend a tiny scarf to match Hank’s scarf… 😭😭 the people who organized this box really did such a wonderful thing! For such a truly wonderful person! ❤❤️❤️ thank you for sharing Hank, hope you got that dessert
I am SO SO grateful that you and John started Vlogbrothers so many years ago. I'm sure that you never would have imagined at the time that it would go on to foster such a loving and supportive corner of the internet (much of which is decidedly not loving and supportive) and that that corner would extend out into the world into irl community and concrete action. This video and all of the kindness in it (and in the comments) made me think of that trajectory, and the power of creative and kind sharing.
I'm not sure if in summer more people would wonder "Hey, why is that guy wearing a knit cap right now?" or "Hey, why is that guy wearing an octopus on his head right now?"
What an amazing box of goodies. I think that anyone who has ever gone through cancer treatment appreciated this. Let’s all remember our friends going through a difficult time and send them a little something, even if it is just a card. Sending you love Hank and hope you feel better soon!
the amount of work all of those crochet things took - wow - i have made that octopus hat (the pattern is on etsy) and it took me two weeks! all of those things together took some serious time!
Hank, I am begging you to wear the octopus hat skiing (or similar winter sporting) this winter. I want to see the tentacles majestically flap in the breeze
Not even to the mid-point of the video and I'm sitting here grinning like a mule eating briars! I am so happy to see you all lit up; it warms my heart so much❣️ Part 2: With all the goings-on in our nation and the world, it's easy to get into a funk about our fellow humans, but when I'm getting a little down, the Brothers Green and their followers are always an affirmation that there are some really awesome people on this planet.
I am so happy to see the amount of people who took the time to try and send something and even just let you know they were thinking of you. I remember going through the same regiment as you (ABVD) for Hodgkin's and had relatively no support. In some ways it can break a person to not have the support system there when you really need it. As I said though, it's just warms my heart to see the amount of people who reached out and sent you something. Even more so to see how thankful you were for all of it.
Humans aren't made to do life and death stuff alone, and a drawback in our society is that too many do. I too feel moved by Hank's abundance of support.
This is so kind! I’ve been trying to think of something I could do to show support, and since you’re clearly all stuffed up now, I think I’ll make a donation to PIH! Hope you’re doing well!
SO excited you're going to get to read the Vorkosigan Saga!!! The blend of humor, sci-fi, and just... Human-ness... Is wonderful, and Young Miles is a great place to start.
i mean… that jpl/nasa pin bag has to be so awesome. your love for science is so contagious some of the leading minds of space exploration care enough to send you all this stuff!! i’m proud to have you popular
Everything about this is absolutely wonderful. I can't imagine how much work it was to organise this, nor how much it must have cost to post! Bless you nerdfighteria.
I remember when my mom had cancer when I was about Oren's age, we had gotten a similar box o stuff from a well-meaning community. Those presents meant so so much to me and my sister. Love seeing this
Love the love in this video. Just a suggestion for the patches Hank, my family collected travel patches for me from birth to eighteen and surprised me by making me a blanket with all the patches I still collect and add patches to the blanket. I think it would be cool to take the mission patches and put them on a blanket for Orin. ❤
This man is such an inspiration. I cannot express what his presence on this earth has meant for me. I thank you, Mr. Green for your being, for your documenting yourself for our entertainment, enlightenment and enrichment, because I truly appreciate all that you do. Also Mr. John Green of course, but this is hank's channel, and frankly you've influenced me most; If it wasn't for all your work in science communication I probably would not have pursued a career in research, and for that I'm frankly eternally grateful. Sorry I sound crazy. Just wanna put it out there cause your work has influenced me wonderfully.
This video hit me in the feels so much, it made me so, so happy. Hank, every time you've felt well enough to make something for the internet since starting chemo, it has just made my day, because it means you feel well enough to do what you love.
This is so fun. And at this point, how many people who had Crash Course as a part of their academic journey are now at JPL and tons of other cool places?
This is the coolest box opening ever!!!! So much love & specific attention. The Book is so awesome and the beanies and Octopus hat rock!!!! Hank you look like a kid on Christmas morning!!!
Those are some really gorgeous crochet items you got hank, which had to have all been made by hand because crochet can't be machined. The hat and amigirumi toys in particular have a lot of detail and skill put into them, I can tell. You've really touched a lot of people. People don't give out crochet gifts lightly, because it takes a lot of time to make them, more than people who don't know how to crochet know to appreciate.
I think it’s so sweet that this man is going through so much that people wanted to give him presents to help him through and feel better, and his immediate response is to think of his family and what he can give to them to make *their* lives easier and bring *them* joy ❤️❤️❤️
Those aren't just constellations, they are DINOSAUR CONSTELLATIONS!!! 😯😯 Also, i need to make myself one of those octo-hats now lol! That thing is dope af!
This video & its comment section give me hope. Sometimes the world seems like such a horrible place and humans can be so mean to each other - but this reminds me that there are a LOT of good decent people & maybe the world isn't as bad as it sometimes seems. Thank you Hank for sharing your journey, keeping us educated & entertained, and sharing your joys & struggles. It means so much to so many. ❤
