Right after 42 minutes: I've been painting for a few years now, and here's a very useful tip - if you mess up a little bit, never tell anyone. Odds are you're the only one who'll ever notice it, unless it's a glaring mistake. :)

As a resident of Muncie, Indiana I just want to talk about Bob Ross’s house for a minute since I’ve drove past it a few dozen times. It’s a small house, but you can only see half of it. That’s because it’s surrounded by happy little trees. There’s no fence or gate, or, security system at the front, which is just nice that everyone respects Bob Ross enough not to rob him (or maybe there’s more you can only see part of the house). Also yes, Muncie is the setting of the Garfield comics and I feel that adds to Bob Ross’s magic somehow.

Some presumed FAQs SPOILERS FOR THE END OF THE VIDEO: 1. Did I actually paint a painting, or did I fake it? I really did paint it and I am super proud of how it turned out! Took me forever to cut through 8+ hours of footage because I was stopping to paint stuff for sometimes 20-30 minutes at a time. 2. Are you ever going to post it anywhere? Twitter or Instagram, maybe? Nope! But you can follow me on both of those @ScottNiswander for non-painting related content 😉 3. Did I experience “the joy of painting” while painting? It came in waves. I think it started with frustrations about not loading the brushes up correctly, but then the sky and clouds came together. Then I messed up the mountains, but some trees made it look alright. Then I messed up mixing colors and got really bummed and kinda started that part over. Then I finished up with a few more plants and it made the whole thing come together in a super satisfying way. It’s weird to say, but I genuinely can’t stop looking at the finished painting. Knowing that I was able to make that without practice is very rewarding, and does give me joy. I will paint again in the future. If only in an effort to pursue the habit of not posting everything I make online. Also, the Bob Ross subreddit is very wholesome.

I used to sit with my Grandpa while he watched Bob Ross and painted on a canvas. Oftentimes he would give me a canvas that he had messed up and let me paint my own “masterpiece” . Bob Ross is part of my childhood and watching him now as an adult transports me right back to those days. I would give anything to hug my Grandpa one more time.

Bob Ross purposely didnt want all the hoopla to be about him, which is why he did very few interviews. The majority of his time was spent doing painting workshops, filming the show and living a quiet life. It is a shame that the people who own his likeness (The Kowalski family, specifically Annette) refuse to allow his work to be sold or displayed (outside of a few pieces on loan to the Smithsonian), but they are following Bob's wishes. They have been interviewed several times, most recently for a NY Times piece in 2019, and have been steadfast is keeping Bob's personal life private.

I grew up with Bob Ross in the background of my childhood play days. You hit the nail right on the head. Before the internet my parents would keep PBS on the TV if we weren’t actively watching something else. It wasn’t until after college I realized how engrained his legacy was ingrained in my subconscious he was. And until this video, I hadn’t really know anything about him besides the show I grew up with and the memes that were spurred in the internet era. Thanks for the nostalgia trip and filling in the gaps of my childhood memories, exceptional work, very well done 👏👏

But this video gave me an understanding and appreciation of Bob Ross I didn't expect. Here's the thing, "real artist" of the time called Norman Rockwell's oil paintings cheap and called Norman Rockwell a hack. But original Norman Rockwell oil paintings are in the Smithsonian and sell for over Two Million at auction when they're put up for sale.
@futurestoryteller
@futurestoryteller 3 года назад
Popularity creates marketability, it does not define quality. Rockwell was part of a machinery of industry that many artists are not. I'm not here to change your mind, I don't have strong feelings about Rockwell as an icon, one way or the other, but I do think we should think critically, and not confuse arguments. Take a step back from it for a second: Rockwell utilized methods that would be despised by predecessors and discarded by successors while overshadowing many, many equally, or arguably more talented contemporaries. Considering his fame and wealth I don't think the criticisms were unfair in his time, and it would probably be fair enough to take some of them to heart today.

Came here because of Quinton Reviews! Great video, Bob Ross was someone I had never looked into the history of and after watching the whole vid...I have very complicated feelings about him and his business. I like that you tried to leave nuance in the ending, that you didn't 100% condemn anyone with the limited info you had but tried to present what you had found and how you felt about it.

I feel bad it takes me so long to get through these videos, but I don’t have the attention span to watch an over one hour video in one sitting.
@ssatva
@ssatva 3 года назад
I took several days to get around to watching it, and had to do it in a couple sittings, but it's still a great experience. Also sometimes 'not having the attention span to' is hard to distinguish from 'is unusually deeply affected by', so that might be part of it as well. Even if not, whatever gets you through it, this stuff is at least worth putting the effort in however we can.

You know, I think I love the fact that there's a Bob Barker video that's over an hour long.

The last bit, when you didn't show us the painting, reminded me of Sean Penn's scene in The Secret Life o Walter Mitty. When Penn's character doesn't take the picture of a Snow leopard, he says "beautiful things don't ask for attention" and that if he finds a moment that he likes "I mean me, personally, I don't like to have the distraction of the camera. I just wanna stay, in it." It's one of my favorite scenes in any movie or tv show.

Not gonna lie, I think this is your best video; the comedic timing was great and the internal narrative was well done (although I was excited to see the painting, ngl). This was really great!

Scott Niswander is a wholesome man who discusses topics that are both non-wholesome and wholesome at one time! Thank you.

Top notch. Hardly anyone knows the story of the rivalry between Bill Alexander and Bob Ross. A must view and a permanent save in your RU-vid playlist.

Came here for this particular video, cause you plugged it in that Loki quiz on SCB. And I’m happy I did. At first I put it on just as background noise but found myself here and there stopping and actually listening and watching. Specially at the end. Well phrased to not monetize everything. Thank you very much for this video. Great job. Love from Germany.

Hi, coming back after seeing the tweet to say this video is good as hell and somehow more than lived up to the substantial hype. I don’t know why I didn’t try your videos earlier but over the past few months I’ve learned that was an absolute tragedy. Keep on keepin on, man :)

i was like "oh cool a 14 mins video about Bob Ross... wait what! it's a hour and 14 mins!!!" i watched Bob Ross a lot as a kid (sometimes before the internet and PVRs you actually had to watch "live television") and it was always such a treat. thanks for this wonderful look into his story.

The new videos that you’ve been putting out this year have had a lot of heart and insight in them that I really appreciate. Being open about struggles with creating what you want to, as well as concerns about the quality of what you’ve done (the dungeon master stuff in a previous video hit very close to home) adds a great dimension to all the videos.and to cap it off with this excellent video about Bob Ross is perfect. Thank you for all the great context/content.

bruh, your niche vids are what made me find you and stick around. I tend to scroll past those generic clickbaity "is comic book character xyz?????" thumbnails with only a six minute runtime. but show me a thumbnail about Cap punching nazis with an hour long runtime or an analysis of Hamilton with a twenty minute runtime and I am THERE, BABY!

Due to my age I never watched Bob Ross, but I am taking classes at my local community center. I am so fortunate to have the opportunity to learn without being pressured to be good.

I didn't think I'd ever be this glad to have someone not fulfill their promise to show me sth they made. The fact that there is a part of your life, that you have wholly to yourself is really nice to know. As always this video was absolutely amazing. Your videos really are the "The Joy of Painting" of RU-vid.

I've drawn as a hobby ever since i was like 4, and my parents/ family constantly ask when I'm gonna get a job in design or why I should start selling my art, and its always bothered me. I never really understood why until now. This video perfectly describes why. I dont need to use my hobby for profit, i dont need to ruin the thing i enjoy by constantly viewing it with the soul-crushing weight of monetary value on my shoulders at all times. I do it because i enjoy doing it, i dont need another reason. Your time and effort isnt suddenly being wasted because the thing youre doing doesnt put money in your wallet. Your time is incredibly important and doing something, anything, that makes you happy is the best possible use of our limited time here. Do what you love and love what you do

You, kind Sir, are awesome. You’re so respectful, even when you are still left with questions. I love how you have realized that you have the ability to both explore and pay tribute to the “greats-of-olden-time.” It’s so empowering to make something just for yourself. On a personal level: the things you make yourself are masterpieces. Be that videos, posts, or paintings. They are genuine, and no one can say otherwise. As your audience, it’s a wonderful thing to walk through your thoughts alongside you. We don’t have to see every little thing. Just watching you find a little happiness with the results of your hard work - THAT is good enough for me.
