Sophie, I actually think there's another aspect to this: and that's learning how to properly care for your bags! I think a young woman probably doesn't know how to think about dye transfer, leather care, and even perhaps styling practicality. I think a quality bag at a lower price point, like a dooney & burke, brahmin, aspinal, strathverry, or coach are really good beginner bags. Brahmins are insanely durable in their croc print - that's what I would say a college student should buy.

I don't think I'll ever own a Chanel, LV, Hermès or Dior. They are simply not in my prince range. I made my first purchase of a Coach bag a couple months ago and I absolutely love it, I'm getting a second one. That's as expensive as I will go.

I've been a Coach fan for ages. I don't understand why it doesn't get the love it deserves. Their quality is better than a couple of lux brands AND best of all, most of their bags have COMPARTMENTS!!!! Not many brands make bags with compartments

I agree. Coach is an underdog, but they destroyed their own rep by the ridiculous amounts of outlets in North America. I love the brand and I hope they reverse the damage they've done to their brand. I notice Kate Spade following into the same trap.

Thank you! Someone was finally honest about it! It’s not that these are just unrealistic first purchases ….. they’re just unrealistic bags the average woman will ever own unless she’s extremely wealthy. Or unless she comes into a very large sum of money and decides to treat herself to one of these. Other than that, the average woman will never own a Chanel Classic Flap or Hermès handbag. And it’s always so irritating when you hear someone encourage you to go buy one …. Like they’re just so attainable and cost friendly. Lol!

And I'll be honest, I have Chanel, Fendi etc. It doesn't change your life. At all. It's a bag. I think people think they are missing out but it's so not worth going into debt for. I've had my fun buying new back in the day but now, new turns me right off because of the greed of the companies. Preloved all the way! And the quality is way better.

Some of the Coach bags are absolutely beautiful. I feel like they get a bad reputation due to their more mainstream stuff which can be sort of ugly/basic to be fair, but once you actually check out their fine leather bags they're lovely.

I love vintage. I scored a D&G hobo bag for 50 euros once. And it’s real and in excellent condition. Wooo. Glass of champagne cannot change that feeling lol. Japan is a vintage lux shopping walhalla. I’m saving up to go there. Get myself a couple of items and bags including the entire trip, all for the price of 1 or 2 lux new bags.

I agree on Chanel. I find the quality better on the older bags as well. I purchased my reissue 226 pre loved. You would NEVER know it was second hand - the bag was perfect. What really gets me are the jersey Chanel bags that sell almost as much as the leather.

I completely agree. I have 2 vintage Chanel ( from the 90's) and it's not only the quality that is better but also attention to detail : pattern on the flap ( + small pocket on the back) perfectly aligns with the rest of the bag when you close it , stitching is smaller and more elegant etc.

Let’s bring back the jumbo! This is my current mission. Bigger bags are definitely coming back and I’m so happy to be bringing my jumbo out again. It has been one of my least used bags until I decided recently that my solution to that would be to just wear it! I’m wearing it almost daily at the moment and it feels so good. Delvaux is definitely outside of a lot of people’s financial means as well. May be cheaper than Chanel - and they have not done the huge price increases - but not by much. The Tempête MM, for example, is over €5000.

My first bag was a medium classic flap! I purchased it brand new 2 years ago & I’m so glad I did, I’m not sure I would buy a Chanel brand new anymore with the price increases. I’m going for a lot of LV these days, their leather is so beautiful.

The Coach Tabby in the 26 size is a /very/ good first luxury bag. Extremely well made, lots of combinations and colourways, and the warranty and exchange policy on it is superb. But I do not recommend the Pillow Tabby in the 18, because that thing wouldn't fit quite as much as one would think. Had one, wound up selling it off. :(

All of my bags (Coach, Cartier, Longchamp) are either pre loved or purchased with a sale and it’s let me have great bags that I love on a limited income. Planning for the future, there’s only one bag that I absolutely want new and that’s just because the color way is quite specific (though if I see it pre loved I’d definitely pick it up).

Rachel, if you go for the lady dior - I've been thinking that's my next purchase for a while - I would choose a patent. It's the most durable leather. But if do choose something else, I would not recommend the ultramatte, as the finishings on that seem very delicate (and not meant to last a lifetime).

My daughter is just about to become a teenager and Coach bags are perfect for her. They are stylish, good quality but not inappropriately expensive for a young girl that’ll just stuff her switch console in it. I personally rarely wear them but only because in our small town almost all women wear Coach and Michael Kors outlet stuff and it made it feel very ordinary to me.

My Chanel medium classic flap was my first bag. I got it vintage in excellent condition about a year ago. I saved 1500 euros at the time on retail. With the newest price increase, I saved 2000 euros 😊 However, I wear my Coach tabby on a day to day basis and will be getting the Longchamp Le Pliage for my new work bag.

Mulberry bags are AMAZING! I’m so surprised that almost no one on utube talks about this brand. The prices are reasonable amd the bags last for a very long time with little wear as well as Coach and YSL. I feel that some people like/buy expensive bags because they feel it validates them or their success in general so to buy an inexpensive bag has not got that appeal. But that’s great because those of us who like well made bags can still purchase them without worrying about numerous price increases per year. Don’t fry me wrong I have bought new Chanel bags. The last one was a week ago ( a classic flap). I’m no longer prepared to pay those price increases because their bags do not justify the prices tag anymore. So I’m not a hater of those who do o just feel that if you have to think about the price then you can’t really afford it!

Preloved really depends. LV, CHANEL, HERMES can be at many times much more than the store because of the lack of stock in the stores when considering new models. Jumbo’s in “very good” conditions which do have a few scuffs and scratches are mostly going for $5700 on average. But in other brands for sure you can save tons. I just bought a Christian Louboutin Mini Paloma in the Tie Dye that came out earlier this year and I was waiting and waiting. From retail at $2k I was able to snatch one for $1k in “New” condition from Fashionphile. I have bought Dior glasses also in new conditions for $90. It’s a lot of hunting and focusing on the item that you want until you find the best price. Also I love packaging and that is one experience you don’t get unless you purchase new. Most of the times the boxes aren’t included only the dust bags, if you could care less than it’s a great option.

I had the same concern about my lipstick being messed up by my wretched mask, SO, I put the camera on my phone and switched it so I could see my face (like I was taking a selfie -but you don’t take the photo!) -& thank God I did, because my mask had messed up my red lipstick!! So using your phone is a sneaky way of checking your lipstick without looking like you’re using a mirror!

My first bag (on my own money) was a Chanel flap, the East West, 16 years ago. For that price, nowadays, I couldn't even get a mini Lou from Saint Laurent 😱 They have absolutely priced me out, I can't afford Chanel now. Plain and simple. I'm not even near. I would love to buy pre loved but since I don't know all the details of every brand, and usually, there are so many good fakes. I would just not be comfortable buying pre loved with the fear of spending loads of money on something that is not the real deal. To be honest, the beginning of the first UK lockdown, I bought a Fendi bag online, and it arrived in some package that was not high end and gave me the wrong impression (even though it didn't look fake). I returned the Fendi bag in the end because I was not being 100% sure that it was a real Fendi bag. For me, the only way to have peace of mind, is buying directly in the store.

Hi Sophie! I have definitely been priced out of some luxury brands within this past year! I no longer buy new from vuitton or chanel. Preowned is the way for me. I have acquired some gorgeous pieces in excellent condition! Also for me as an American, Coach was a first love! I still purchase from them because the quality is good! I have also been dabbling with some Black owned luxury brands like Brandon Blackwood; NL the Label; Telfar. Good prices and high quality!

Mulberry is such an underrated brand and find that there's not many stores internationally. I have a small lily in green aqua & the mini cara quilted black bag. Both are not exactly classics but I love both! I also have the Burberry coat with detachable hood and its great for Aussie weather at a decent price too. : )

(Would love a review of the Samsung flip 3) I love the antigona have it in a beautiful brown patent that locks like it’s made out of mahogany ❤️ had it for 6 years and looks new and looks like a piece of art! And I think the Bayswater you have is a fluke because the two bags I have are in a flawless thick and lush leather and hardware is still after 8 years and a hard life still look new.

I love this video, I have two givenchy antigona bags, one black in the medium size and one red in the small size, and they feel so cool timeless and even my fiancé loves them. Also ysl bags that I have bought in the past are amazing and I've received compliments from ysl on how new they look. My thoughts on the price increase in chanel is that I'd much rather take the same money for a chanel bag and put in in a dreamy bucket list vacation (when it is possible) or take some of it and spend it on high quality jewellery/watch which is what I've been buying lately. I've paused this video for an errand so I can have more Sophie-time later :). Have a great weekend

Love the vlog! The defender is gorgeous. I contemplated it for weeks during the last lockdown where we couldn’t test drive anything. I did t get one as it only looks great with all the extras and it is not fast unless you upgrade the engine so the final price was way over £80,000. I bought the new BNW M440 convertible instead without test drinking it. It is amazing and luxurious. So glad I wasn’t put off by the negative comments

Celine is pretty cool ;) almost all of their Bags have a very simple design and the quality ist superb. I have 5 Celine Bags and if you wanna buy a Celine Bag I would recommend buying it secondhand and make sure it’s OldCeline - Phoebe Philos Designs were better and the quality too

I think you had really bad luck with your first (The pink) Mulberry bag, Sophie! I have a very well made wallet and a beautiful scarf from them (about two years ago, I also wanted to buy the Zipped Bayswater, but one size I tried was to big, the next smaller size was too small, so I had to pass 🤷🏻‍♀️ - but the bags seemed very well made, too). Would like to buy again from them (general speaking, I have nothing special in mind right now), but since the Brexit it's more difficult to get what you'd maybe like; ordering from Selfridges was great before Brexit, but would now be too expensive (as would be ordering from the Mulberry website, plus they only accept credit card payment); and other retailers in the EU usually only have very limited stock and colours. So sad 🙁. Oh, same with Aspinal of London 🙁!! Much love ❤🍁❤

mulberry has some amazing bags for only 1,300$ that it really makes a statement when I go out. I compare it to other bags that I used to own in the past, the quality of leather really stands out. Also, mulberry is not well known in the USA and yet I get teh feel of a birkin bag without paying the birkin price. Got a givenchy antigona which i love and most recently got a louis vuitton bag in canvas only because LV is slowly getting rid of canvas and I feel like its a now or never sort of thing. that being said, I bought a hermes belt which is by far one of the best luxury belts out there.

Burberry and Givenchy are also on my bucket list but will probably go per-loved as I like a medium size bag. I would love to own a Chanel classic flap but even pre- loved is very pricey. Here in Canada the prices are very high 🙁 I do have a Burberry trench, it’s 25 plus years now.. still going strong so highly recommend. I do like the black version you had. Xoxo 💕🇨🇦

I have found that there are some fantastic bargains to be found on the preloved market. Even in Chanel, Louis Vuitton, leather bags only, forget the canvas they are ridiculously priced and they don’t age well anyway, and Dior bags except for the Lady which has gone sky high preloved in the past year. You do have to be prepared to put in the time and search hard. I have been pleasantly surprised by Dior during the pandemic. While other brands have had ludicrous price rises they haven’t. In Australia the medium Lady Dior has only gone up $500 aud (around 250 pounds) brand new which is amazing and really a credit to them when you see what most of the others have done. Aspinal is another good one. I feel that their quality walks all over Mulberry and their bags haven’t increased a cent in the past 2 years.

I recently made my first big luxury purchase! I bought a beautiful pre-loved dior diorama. I saved up for almost two years. I would still love to own a Chanel some day, but it’s still hard to mentally justify the price.

I’ve started purchasing pre-loved over new Louis Vuitton for the quality more than anything! I did not save much on my mini pochette 2006 and regular pochette 1999 by going pre-loved but I did get items with amazing quality that have already worn better than my neverfull 2019 has. Cant recommend those late 90s to early 2000s pieces enough

I’m curious to know what you think of new brands entering the market with that utilitarian aesthetic. Thoughts on Telfar? Off White? What about darker brands like A Cold Wall, Alyx, or Rick Owens? Are they too avant grade for you or have you ever considered their pieces? Also curious to know how ethics play a role in your purchasing decisions (if they play a role)? This is long but I learned a lot of lessons. My first "designer bag" was actually on the coach end of pricing but I don't use it and if I went back in time I would never buy it again. The brand is MuteMuse for about $450 and it's the very first bag they had ever produced. They were getting extremely trendy and popular in Korea. So I bought it too. The quality is not good at all. Within two months it experienced scratches on the leather, dye transfer, and scuffs. I still have the bag but I rarely use it. Also the color is only good for one season and the straps that come with the bag are uncomfortable. I think I would've gone with a coach or a Kate spade as a first designer bag rather then a newly made brand. But the mistakes didn't stop there lol. I went with a Charles and Keith bag, the leather is super stiff, the bag is super heavy for it's size, and it's basically a black hole on the inside. I have severe allergies and have to carry an epi pen, anything that has a black hole bothers me. I also rarely wear that bag. Also I bought shoes from Charles and Keith and no joke they broke within the first two weeks of use. I returned them and got them replaced and those broke even faster. But I've learned a lot quickly and I have my own formula. So when I bought my first high end bag (Disney Gucci 2020) it passed all of my tests: 1. Will I use it? 2. Do I still want this bag 30+ days after seeing it? 3. Is the leather durable but has a give to it? 4. Does it pass the epi pen test (does it fit and can I quickly get to it) 5. Can I wear it with my current wardrobe in any season? 6. Could I get this pre-loved for the same quality? 7. will it sell again (sometimes I've ignored this one once but don't regret it)? I'm interested in a specific shade of the lady Dior now but 30 days hasn't passed yet. I also don't know if I want it used or pre-loved.

I think coach has some great classical styles that stand the test of time. The silhouette of the Parker top handle for example. It doesn’t have a huge logo and the quality is great! Also the longchamp le pliage is great quality and again so versatile. I am definitely aiming for a nice coach bag as my first designer since I’m a poor uni student 🙈 also does anyone else recognise dkny as a designer brand? Because I managed to get a really nice bag from their Bicester village store that has the same look as the LV alma bb in epi leather! Thanks for the wonderful video again Sophie ❤️❤️

Sophie, your video was lovely as always. I bought 3 second-hand bags from Vestiaire in 2020 and 2021, and managed to get them for half to 1/3 of their original new price, which is pretty satisfying bearing in mind they were brand new. They were my first luxury purchases too (Prada and Chloe). I would always recommend checking second-hand price vs. brand new. A lot of people buy luxury items and never end up using them, then sell for a really good price. If you are after the quality rather than the latest it-bag, second-hand is good. It is a shame we now have to add 20-25% customs and tax for items from Europe to the UK though :( Something to bear in mind, at least on Vestiaire ! For me, Chanel and Hermes are not ideal first bag purchases. I would go with the more affordable Prada, Gucci, Chloe, Saint Laurent first to test if we are capable of handling luxury items on a regular basis and look after them properly, or as you said Coach (really lovely designs) or Mulberry.

Interesting you said what you said about Mulberry, I stopped buying their bags in 2014/15 after the quality tanked & the pricing doubled. I still look at them in-store from time to time, and they don't particularly feel like great quality. 🤷🏼‍♀️
