Unsafe Driving Around School Buses Frustrates Parents 

I cannot imagine the pain and heartbreak of losing 3 children all at once...like that's your entire family right there.

Sending love to the woman who lost her whole family to an avoidable and tragic accident :( I'm not sure why people cannot just arrive to their destination a few minutes late. I always get stuck behind buses on my way to work, but it's never that serious to blow thru a stop sign. Just be a normal person and be annoyed while you're waiting for the stop sign on the school bus to reel back in.

Kudos to the guy at the end for accepting responsibility for his mistake. He didn't deny it or make dumb excuses or anything.

As someone who has hit been hit by a car, due to another’s negligence, this hurts my heart, seeing innocent children hit and dying from individuals impatience and stupidity.

I’ve never seen a bus stop take more than 1 minute tops. So the fact that some people can’t wait 30-60 SECONDS to save a child’s life is infuriating.

Finally police do something about it. I’m sick and tired of these ignorant people who think it’s ok to risk a child’s life because of their stupid choices. I pray for the families who had to go through the bus stop tragedies. 💔

as a high school bus student, its crazy how drivers act so careless when they don't follow the rules. Theres been many times when other students almost get hit.

Kudos to the last driver that said he deserved the ticket for not stopping at the bus stop sign. It's nice to see someone admit their wrong doing.

I remember my aunt driving me to do some shopping one day when I was fresh out of highschool. We stopped at a bus and the car behind us slammed on her horn, yelling "LETS GO!" out her window. When she tried to swerve around into the other lane (driving on the wrong side of the road mind you), my aunt pulled the same maneuver to block her. Dear god I never thought the yelling would stop. We were there for maybe twenty five seconds, but the shouting made it feel like several minutes. Just stop people. It's the law...

I hate when people do this. I've had people honk at me for stopping at the flashing lights on buses. That's a hill I'll die on. No one is making me put kids in danger.

Whoever that kid is that got hit and got back up just won their family a whole bunch of money. Also, my heart goes out to the family that lost all 3 of their kids. I couldn't ever imagine that kind of pain.

I was driving the backroads yesterday and found myself behind a school bus. It stopped about 5 times and I felt frustrated but seeing those little kiddos running to get in the bus eased my frustration. I felt thankful that they had a way to get to school considering the area I was driving by. Secondly, I took a look at my GPS and realized those 5 stops only put me behind by 3 minutes. By the time I reached the main road, I was no longer behind. I made it to where I needed to be on time! In truth, I watch these videos about school buses to gain a better understanding and appreciation about the importance of stopping when the school bus stops.

Unfortunately this is what a “time is money” culture brings to the table: Impatience and entitlement to get to your destination simply because no one else’s safety and virtue is valued more than “my, me, I”.

I don't know what's more infuriating. The fact that these drivers just straight up ignore the stop signs or the fact that they have the audacity to honk at these children like it's their fault.

they need to do this EVERYWHERE. i live in NY, and we just had a similar incident with my 4 year old neice, hit by an impatient motorcycle. this needs to be taken more seriously than trying to get illegal guns off the streets

It shows that people don't even care about children's lives anymore it sad really sad for those three children 😔

I'm overwhelmed with happiness that drivers who choose to ignore the stop sign on a school bus get a hefty ticket. I hope authorities crack down on drivers in all states. Side Note: Drivers also need to be careful around icecream trucks

The stop sign should extend out further like a good 1.5m so cars don't have the choice to go past or their car gets damaged

Dude do any of them know what is one of the main important keys of driving? It's patience! Those drivers do not get it and it frustrates me. They should have their driver's license taken away for not being patient and instead ruining children's innocent lives!

I remember when I used to use the bus in elementary school, our bus driver was very responsible. Everytime we came to a stop, even if one kid had to cross the road, she'd grab a stop sign she kept and walked to the middle of the road like a cross guard before she let anyone else cross. I always used to think it was a bit too much be seeing stories like these makes me appreciate her fully after all these years.

Why does a bus need to activate their stop sign on a 6 lane highway? …..I feel like that is dangerous for motorists as well having to slow down that fast

These drivers need to be found, named, shamed, and charged.

The fact that there’s a bus stop on a four lane divided highway and literally no one’s stopping speaks more horrible American urban planning than it does to the decisions of the individual drivers.

As someone who takes the bus everyday. This has happened to me as well expect I stopped right in time just before the car could hit me. I was in shock and I just stood there for a moment not even the driver stopped to see if I was okay they just drove off, ever since that day I’ve been having trouble crossing the street it’s kinda embarrassing considering I’m 15 but I’m getting there

Come on the school bus stop sign is just like a stop sign on the road the school bus always has the right of away that’s so ignorant.

They should have automatic spike strips that deploy when the red light come on.

My heart goes out to the friends and families of the kids that lost their lives, I honestly don’t know why people would just ignore the stop signs attached to all buses. This is very heartbreaking.

In Virginia we have cameras that take a picture of your license plate if you pass them when the lights flash red. And you get a ticket in the mail for that as well.

Meh, buses shouldn't stop on 3-4 lane roads. Kids aren't allowed to cross that many lanes.

That is truly sad ): I remember when I was in elementary school a student was getting off the bus and the school bus stop sign was out, there was an impatient driver behind the bus and decides to go around it just to meet head on with a city police! When those red and blue lights came on that was the best thing ever! I wish people were more considerate with school busses

There should be jail time and a 1 year license suspension for blatantly failing to stop for a bus. In my county the busses now all have cameras and the county sends you a $250 fine for failing to stop.

I’m all for stopping for children, I’m very pro life. But I cannot see why they would want to have a bus full of children stopping on a 4 lane highway? Sounds very dangerous just like stopping at railroad tracks? Maybe there was nowhere else to let the kids off?

to be fair, wtf do busses stop in the middle of highways?? (theres multiple where i live). makes no sense to me.. pull in a side road.. why force kids to cross the highway in the 1st place.

I know it's the law in America, and there's no excuse for breaking it. But honestly it seems crazy that everything stops when a bus is pulled over. In any over country its just common sense to not run across the road without looking, it's drilled into us since we're toddlers

Take away the licenses of these reckless individuals. Once that happens people will definitely begin to follow the rules. Make it into a law!!

I actually got stuck behind a bus here in south central Texas yesterday and I’m happy to state that every vehicle stopped and not only that but the bus driver personally got out and stood in the oncoming lane to protect the kids with his own body so that they could cross. It was uplifting to see. 🤙🏽💛

Kids need to be smart and look before crossing too. Assuming that everyone on the road is an idiot has saved me from countless potential accidents

How about teach your kids to look both ways before jaywalking. Better yet, teach your kids to use the crosswalk intersections where you press the button & wait till it’s okay to walk.

This is why everyone should take refresher courses every two years.

Don't distort the cause of these accidents. The truth is that the school bus system is too often irresponsible by refusing to drive into apartment complexes and other multiple housing units. They will stop out on the main highway interrupting and interfering with the flow of traffic during rush hour, instead of driving into the apartment or residential complex where the children can safely board the bus out of the flow of traffic. A school bus driver who stops on a busy highway to pick up kids from a residential complex instead of driving into it to pick them up, is as responsible for their deaths as the motorists to drive by the bus. They should not even allow children near the bus until cars have stopped fully.The school system and the bus drivers have put the children in a position to be hurt because they're too lazy to drive into these complexes or plan these routes.

I’ve seen too many drivers pass school busses like that. Speeding in a school zone too😢 It’s disgusting

Our bus driver would call in the license plate of car's that went around her, most of her driving never got over 35 mph, so she could read the numbers and letters, everytime police, went to those homes and ticketed them.

So sad for the family that lost their kids. Such a tragedy. I remember my bus driver would always tell us to make eye contact with him and he would wave us on to cross when it was the safest. (Granted people can swerve around cars at any second, but he was able to see along side the bus where we couldn’t.) Remember to look up the law by your state! Stopping for less than 30 seconds can save lives! (And if I’m that big a rush, leave a little earlier or take a different route)

I'm more worried about who thought it was a good idea to have a bus stop on a highway. That person should be picking safer pickup and drop off areas to begin with smh. And yes it's easier to be patient and stop for the school busses there's precious cargo on board. People can be so ignorant and in a rush indangering others to do nothing.

*ONE WEEK IN JAIL* should be the reward for not stopping. Our Children deserve being protected

There should be cops that follow the busses and when they stop they pull out in front of the bus so they can cross safely

This makes me so upset because a vehicle almost ran over my little brother, who was in elementary school at the time, as he crossed the street almost giving the bus driver a heart attack. I still remember the driver’s scream and my brother’s frightened expression. He was less than a foot from being run over as a car raced by. People really need to be more careful. The thought of my brother being seriously injured or worse because of a crazy driver still bothers me.

I watched a young boy get hit by a pickup many years ago (1975), and fortunately he was bundled up for winter and was only scared. Drivers that violate school bus and speed zone laws should be held accountable every time to the fullest extent.

I see a lot of buses that stop on main roads, and, I'm not diverting from the main point, but maybe buses should be required to drop kids off in neighborhood and smaller street settings. Just my opinion, but a main highway isn't the place for a bus stop, given the volume of traffic and speeds. I think it would definitely curb these kinds of things.

To the drivers who don’t stop when the school bus stop sign is flashing, you need to get heavily fined, your drivers license taken away, and jail time. End of story. Stop crying and wait the 30 seconds, it’s not going to hurt you.

*Update:* The woman - Alyssa Shepherd - who tragically stole the precious lives of those three innocent babies, was released from prison in March of 2022. This occurred in 2018. She was sentenced in December 2019 to four years in prison, three years of home detention (which I think is equivalent to house arrest, but I’m not entirely sure), and three years of probation. She didn’t even serve the full fours years. She was only charged with three counts of reckless homicide. She also received a 10 year driver’s license suspension. The family is left with a life sentence, while Alyssa is able to live her life. It’s heartbreaking and infuriating.

Everyone almost everywhere is driving out of control, no cops stopping anyone anymore it seems, right lane on highways has turned into 70 mph and the far left lane? Forget it

This is unconscionable...the amount of no concern of your consequences behind the wheel of thousands of pounds of machinery. Decades ago this could've been my youngest son on a two lane street....it was scary to watch him almost plowed over...thank GOD the driver was paying attention and yelled for him to stop. Few years later is when Gwinnett county they started picking kids up from the side of road they live on so no crossing roads....then they put cameras on busses to snap license of ppl passing the busses....sending them tickets in the mail with snapshots.

I've done some crossing guard work and have had some close calls. Drivers need to slow down!

When the bus stops, ALL lanes must stop unless there is a three-foot divider for oncoming traffic.

This has been happening recently at my bus stop, drivers just don’t stop and speed around the bus. I hope my school district looks into it because there have been way to many close calls.

there’s a reason why when i stop behind school busses and do and try to block the second lane for the idiots that like to bypass the school bus when they’re stopped. Even at an intersection when i let kids walk on the crosswalk i always look at my rear view mirror because people like to assume that i’m stopped for no reason.
