Patti and Ralph have lived in their family beach house ever since he built it 20 years ago. And not much has changed, including the outdated décor and some of the flaws that come with DIY territory. With their first child already in college and the three others quickly catching up, the couple is shifting their focus and need to downsize for the future. So now it’s up to property expert Sofie Allsopp to revamp this dated beach house before it languishes on the market for yet another year.

So glad ya'll went with live green plants not flowering. So many of us have allergies that pollenating plants aggregate. The brightening of the walls & tired ceiling high cabinetry really refreshed the beach house. Ralph did an amazing job creating a bachelor pad. Poor Patty had been underwhelmed their entire marriage. Good to get the kids involved so they can take pride in the updating as well. NOW the house should show well & sell. GOD BLESS the family into their relocation. Safe & happy future.

Why in the world did that woman live in the house for so many years with those cabinets? If the man built the house, surely he had the skills to do something about the cabinets. I would have had him fix them the first year I lived there.

My mother lived with a kitchen like that for almost 20 years. My father (6'2") designed it to suit himself, not my mother (5'6"), although he never cooked. The kitchen was the first thing she remodeled after he moved out and they got divorced.

You should have seen the kitchen my mother had to live with during the first eight years we lived in my house. My father built it in 1952, and there were no kitchen cabinets until 1960. Then, they most unwisely bought Eurostyle cabinets up on stilts, with nine inches of dead space beneath for dropped forks, etc. to go beneath. Lost storage space, and you still have to clean the floor beneath. I'm still working with those damn cabinets sixty years later, and they're on their fourth facelift. The best part of being willing to live rough and make do? No mortgage, ever.

Our first house was a sweet Cape Cod, custom designed and built by the man, a contractor. There were solid mahogany kitchen cabinets but they were so TINY you could barely stack dinner sized plates in them, and forget about a pantry or a cabinet for larger trays. It could take a half size dishwasher with full width stove or half width stove and full dishwasher. There was a sad lack of counter space too. But he made sure he had a garage with woodworking shop, full basement and amenities for HIM. That was funny. But the workmanship was excellent. It was a 1950s house complete with plastic bathroom tile, linoleum floors in the second floor bedrooms. It did have lovely hardwood floors on the main level. Had we stayed there we would have had to replace the roof and the windows. But we relocated. It had a small bedroom on the first floor that worked great for an office and later, a nursery, next to the bathroom and master bedroom.

The new wall color is no lighter than the soft yellow that was there before. It wasn't the wall color that was making it dark. One of my pet peeves is placing dinning tables upon a rug so that it's difficult to scoot your chair up and the rug gets full of foodstuffs and spills and is hard to clean. Don't do that! I know that when you enter a bedroom you are impressed when you see the bed in full, but it's better to place it on the blank wall so that you can see out the windows while in bed. I do not like to block windows with a bed as Sophie often does. In winter it can be cold and in southern summers it can feel hot. Making the entry area into a foyer/family coming-and-going kind of area is smart. Tracking in sand is inevitable in that area; it gets ground into flooring like sandpaper which is why the wood flooring looked so bad especially at the entry where they were covering it with a rug.

Someone below said the same thing so I figured I was wrong. Thanks for taking the time to inform me. I'm originally from Wash. D.C. (well, two blocks from the dividing line between Maryland and D.C.) and have lived in Oregon. I'm now living in Utah so I'm rusty when it comes to New England accents. (Maybe I was never un-rusty?) There is a Utah accent in the rural areas. For example the town of Spanish Fork is pronounced "Spanish Fark" and Lord is pronounced "Lard." A mother will "bath her baby." I always thought it just sounded ignorant but after listening to the very prim and proper "King's English" on BBC I realized that some of the Utah accents and phrases originated in the British Isles because most of the pioneers who settled Utah emigrated from there. My aunt (in Maryland) pronounced my name "Bahbra." (My family has been in Maryland since the early 1600s.)

In the jersey shore town I grew up in, this house would be torn down so that they could put up a monstrosity up.

my thoughts exactly. they're just dustcatchers, it's half an hour more of cleaning. they serve no purpose whatsoever. also, if i came through the front door, i'd immediately point at the cushions and be like, "no." there's absolutely no need for them there. in fact, most people would use this piece of furniture for … i don't know … shoes? keys? phones? purses? that kinda stuff. those cushions are useless and unnecessary. they're just taking up space. that pink table and its position is weird, too. it just doesn't fit in.

Why didn't they get rid of that Hideous green carpet in the bedroom after doing all the other work? And not sure about the Pepto Bismal kitchen table.

I wouldn't move in to a house with this amount of stairs leading to the entrance. Imagine you have a baby and you need to take out that car seat or a pram every day and go up and down the stairs with it. That's a nope. I have a new stairs now and each time I leave the house I need to husband to help me lift the pram it's difficult and annoying!

The stairs look unsafe. It needs to be redesigned, and repurposed alongside the house.

The entire house is done very nice but the pink table is ugly. If she wanted to add pink to the table, a pink table runner and pink flowers would have been fine. I also won't have recovered the chairs pink and would have picked a more neutral color if they needed to be recovered at all.

So I buy a house not the furniture or the seller's stuff. Also, I do it the way I want it. A new kitchen would be the first thing, no matter what the existing one looks like - and a rug on an old carpet would not work at all. That would be outside with me immediately, the bathrooms would also have to come out. Done I believe that the claims that are so emphasized in the countries led me to the answer - building is better for these gentlemen than buying used houses.
