With the relative safety modern trains allow, I would bet a large enough budget would even today allow a runaway move to be shot completely like this. Of course using camera angles to make 25mph look like 70.

@GachaRobloxianAndrew
@GachaRobloxianAndrew Год назад
For those wondering if the sparks were real, they were not. There was a driver in the cab of 777, this scene was under control and the train going 15MPH through that curve, the sparks are being emitted from a smoke machine or something. All other effects such as the train going one sided in the movie were done in post production. The only thing dangerous about this scene, in particular, is if that stuntman didn't make the landing. Edit: Stuntman may have been Denzel, we will never know.

Interesting that the stuntman (or maybe it was Denzel?) was filmed jumping from car to car during ths Stanton Curve set piece. Not only is that WAY more dangerous than doing it while going straight over flat ground, but it didn't even make it into the movie. In the film, Frank stays holding onto the handrails on the tank car for the curve part.
@owendahlke6666
@owendahlke6666 Год назад
From what I have seen they probably wanted to make it more realistic that he wasn't jumping from car to car while in the movie a 70 mph train would be tipping on a sharp curve, so they may have just stuck with him holding on, or possibly the director just didn't want to go with that, but in the movie I believe there are some scenes where he is jumping from car to car, just not on the stanton curve.

Is this some irrational boomer logic? This movie only came out 10 years ago. Stunt people haven’t stopped doing crazy stunts, they just do them in a way that doesn’t put them at unnecessary risk. Dead/maimed stunt people aren’t something to be proud of.
@iamnumfive
@iamnumfive 4 года назад
@@breck1637 Regardless of being some irrational boomer, there was far more originality and taking chances then there is not. Plus most safety devices have always been around. Have you heard of Buster Keaton? Check out some of his stunts. Granted, it is not a good thing to subject stuntmen such extreme stunts, but he was the master stuntman in the early days of movies.
@breck1637
@breck1637 4 года назад
@@iamnumfive "there was far more originality and taking chances then there is not." Do you have any evidence to back up your claim that there was more originality in the good ol' days? Also, taking more chances isn't inherently a good thing; a dead/injured stunt person isn't very useful. "Plus most safety devices have always been around." This is far too vague to be meaningful. Around since when? The 40's? 50's? 60's (this is the correct answer btw)? Even if they were around, that doesn't mean they were widely used. Older generations aren't known for their concerns over the welfare and safety of workers. You're suffering from juvenoia - irrational hostility directed toward younger generations. It seems as though you can't fathom the "kids these days" actually doing something in a better way than the old folks.

Denzel Washington was probably nowhere in this area when the action was filmed. He could have flown home, because it takes days to execute this film work. It's all film professionals, hired railroad engineers, hired copters and a stuntman who replaced Washington's character because of the danger involved. Oh, and local citizens rubber-necking the action.

At that stage in the movie everybody knows that the train is a runaway. The locomotive you see at the rear of the train was (according to the movie) driven by two drivers who had managed to catch up with the runaway train, couple up to it and had managed to slow it down just enough so it didn't derail going around the curve. They realise they still can't stop the train completely and the youngest of the two drivers volunteers to jump wagons to the front of the train so he can enter the cab of the runaway loco at the front and apply its brakes to bring the train safely to a halt before it reaches the end of the line.

To the first part of your response.... I know hints the video title above... This move is "loosely" based off the CSX 8888 Runaway that happened in Ohio... From Stanley Yard in Toledo to just south of Kenton, Ohio. This never happened in PA! The whole movie Unstoppable was loosely based off that event. Throw in some Hollywood action scenes and drama and this is what you have... A action movie about a runaway train loosely based on a real event.

They weren't representing anything from the "Staton Curve" other then to make the video video more dramatic, This move is "loosely" based off the CSX 8888 Runaway that happened in Ohio... From Stanley Yard in Toledo to just south of Kenton, Ohio. Probably 95% of the events that you watch in this movie never actually happened. Did you know that those big chemical barrel buildings that you see at the side of Stanton curve arent actually there. They are just special effects. And they edited this scene to make the train almost fall off the bridge.

This is one of my favourite movies. And I’m glad they didn’t do this in the movie but in reality, when they put the two locomotives in front of 777 to try and stop it, they could’ve just jumped from one locomotive to the other over the hand rail

My biggest criticism with the movie is the use of their helicopters. I know they actually had the helicopters fly that close but In reality if this was a actual runaway there’s no way the helicopter pilot would dare get the close and that’s just accounting one helicopter. Those are just my thoughts that will be lost in the abyss known as the internet.
@LaurenThompsonIsMyRealName
@LaurenThompsonIsMyRealName 5 лет назад
Never seen the movie but I agree. Pilots are obviously skilled, but skilled or not, I do not believe any helicopter pilot in real life would fly that close to other helicopters, or a runaway train, or Powerlines! That is nuts! I hope they all got paid well fo risking their lives!

My house is 2 blocks south of that bridge. I was so glad that shit was over. Those helicopters had me up every damn morning and work late nights. It's still cool though and was good revenue for the city. they spend money. I worked on a movie set in Shadyside at the International Harvester Plant. Gung Ho was the movie. Also in the WV State Prison in Moundsville for a movie called Into The Fire/ Out Of The Fire? Something like that.

I’ve got 22 years of service in on the railroad. First off, I’m surprised the Wheeling & Lake Erie (the railroad that owns the property over which they operated in the movie in real life) allowed such idiocy on their property. The producers must’ve paid them well. Secondly, I figured the “runaway” was run at 25mph max & 15 thru the curve, sped up using computer assistance. Thirdly, I watched the movie, figuring I’d get some good laughs from the unrealistic stuff portrayed in the movie. For one, what in the hell Engineer would be stupid enough to disembark from a moving engine to normal a switch in front of him. In real life, the rules on all railroads require the train/engine/cars to be at a full stop before mounting or dismounting equipment.
@Metalrails

Not sure what railroad you work at but I've seen employees getting on or off moving trains many times. Not at fast speeds of course.

I just looked on the Internet and I hate to tell you but seeing as your only source is MapQuest, your point is invalid. By actually cross-checking my information on different websites, this "Stanton" you found is actually not a place, but a "neighborhood" in Brookeville, PA. So no, there is no suck thing as Stanton, PA.
