There's a variable in the pokemon data that keeps track of its origin, having it be zero likely corresponds with "obtained in a trade". Edit: looks like it doesn't, lol

Additionally, the game has several randomly generated bytes it uses for IVs, nature, ability, and shininess. I forget exactly what the procedure was for calculating shininess, but it involved doing something with the data and checking if the resulting number is less than 8. Most likely, having every byte be zeroes results in a zero, which is less then eight, hence why it shows up as shiny in the PC screen.

This is actually one of the most fundamental programming concepts there is; default cases for otherwise bound values is the best way to prevent unintended consequences.

Also probably a leftover from development the devs didn't see a reason to remove

Why put in preventatives for cheaters when your company is so avidly against cheating? Let them suffer honestly. If they hack the game and lose all their save data then thats on them. They shouldnt have been using a save file thats precious to them in the first place if their only intention is to hack.

Same here, I was addicted to getting the highest contest ribbon for my mons. The contest effects of a move became just as important as its fighting effects to me. I was extremely excited to see them return in Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire!!!

sums up my experience with silver as well. while I did know most of the type strengths and weaknesses, I knew nothing about the actual pokemon stats themselves.

I never played like that, I don't know why people do that. Even when I was 5 or 6 I played games to enjoy, and that meant doing all kinds of different things, and in Pokemon that included training/using different Pokemon.

This comment is pretty old, but I'd also like to clear something up. :P The number of Pokemon wouldn't need to be a special value; zero could produce the Pokemon Center effect. Consider what would happen if the Center animation works like this: copy the number of Pokemon into a counter; then: draw a Poke Ball, decrease the counter, and then stop if the counter is zero. If the counter starts at zero, then it decreases and underflows to the maximum possible value before it gets checked the first time. I don't know offhand what counter size would be used, but if it's single-byte, then the game would draw 256 Poke Balls. If the game has a list of where the Poke Balls should be drawn, then we'd (mis)read data past the list's end, getting the nonsensical but not entirely random positions we end up seeing. The odd Pokemon menu behavior could be caused by us already having our cursor past the end of the list. Lists in computers typically start from 0: they go 0th, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and so on. If you have four Pokemon, then the 0th is the first, the 3rd is the last, and the 4th is actually past the end of the list. If you have zero Pokemon, then the 0th is past the end of the list, so you're already past the threshold at which the game would intervene and wrap the cursor from the end of the list back to the start.

I have even more to add! My theory for why BLANK is "obtained in a trade" is similar. The description of where the Pokémon was encountered is probably overwritten as soon as you catch it, with different values for things like "Route 4" or "Mt. Moon" (I never played Gen. III...). The game probably uses the zero for "obtained in a trade." That would make sense since it's the only time the game doesn't know where the Pokémon was caught.

@@DavidJCobbthere’s nothing special here. The ? Pokémon is just a placeholder that is loaded for the Pokédex to display a missing entry. They probably assigned it to slot 0 because you were never intended to go into battle with no Pokémon and not use the PC. They do a lot of error handling to prevent crashes. That’s all it really is. Nothing special about it, just the game attempting to not cause a crash or any other issues with data. When the game is doing things it isn’t programmed to handle you get stuff like the bad egg glitch from scrolling in your party past dots “0-5” because you’re not meant to have more than “6” Pokémon (5 in computer terms since 0 is always where computers start counting from)

Definitely enjoyed them as a kid, myself. It was great to do things with pokemon that didn't involve battling, since many weren't as good as others in terms of combat.

Yeah, I liked them too. I had a Feebas that I wanted to evolve to use there, but never knew how to do it. So I ended with a lvl 81 Feebas that could battle the Elite Four :P

That's because a pokemon is shiny when the two halves of its personally value XOR combined with the trainer and hidden trainer ID are less than 8. In this setup all of those values are probably zero when shinyness is calculated for Blank, so the result is zero as well. (Although I'd expect the trainer ID to be generated on starting a new game, not just catching the first pokemon.)

Pointing Device - also as a side note, the reason it appears as "obtained in a trade" is because its Trainer ID doesn't match yours (presumably it's just a string of zeroes for the glitch Pokemon)

0 XOR 0 = 0, 0 XOR 1 = 1, so 0 XOR anything is an identity function. Unless the trainer and hidden trainer IDs are less than 8, this will never result in a shiny. Maybe the ROM has a number less than 8, but I kind of doubt it. There's probably something else going on here.

I was a freshman in High School by the time Gen 3 came out and I hated the contests. I agree. They were stupid and I didn't want to do them and it's one of the many reasons why I didn't like Gen 3 at all. The main reason that I didn't like Gen 3 is that I found the games to be very boring and I was never bored while playing a Pokemon game until this generation.

I kinda wonder if GF intended on creating a Sound type at some point since many of the sound-based moves are currently Normal type and most Pokémon that are themed around music/sounds are Normal type. And as we've seen with Dark, Steel, and Fairy, Normal type anything is generally what ends up shifting to the new types.

Yellow Anonymous Cacophony[κακοφωνία] comes from the Greek words "kakos"[κακός] which means bad/evil and "phonee" [φωνή] which means voice. That word describes the feeling when you hear sounds that make you annoyed so yeah that could make sense.

Perhaps you're right; a buff that is exclusive to sound-based moves, hence adding an additional strategic element to the competitive/dedicated Trainers :)

I know your question it's very old, but no, it's absolutely impossible to get a legit shiny celebi in the gen 3 games. The only one you can obtain is the Agat Celebi from the japanese Colosseum Bonus Disc, and that one is shiny locked, which is weird, because the Jirachi from the american Colosseum Bonus Disc is NOT shiny locked.

I think if the in-game contests were more in line with the cartoon contests, I'd have had more fun with them. But as they were, basically a turn-based battle where moves were used into a void, they just didn't have any appeal to me. Now, if I had to come up with a song and dance number and perform it with my pokemon, sign me up!

Yep, once you beat the E4 you get the GS ball and can soft reset for shiny celebi! Then use pokemon bank and transfer it over
