I'm an American of Scottish and British descent and I was, and always will be, a great admirer of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II who was a lovely and extraordinary woman, Queen and Head of State. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this. Mr. Gyles Brandreth did leave me with a more well-rounded, human sense of the late Queen Elizabeth II. I am also left with an even stronger sympathy for King Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward, who must have such a deep void in their lives. Not just the mother she was, but the person and woman she was.

I can't remember NOT ever being fascinated with the British Royal Family! As a 49 year old, divorced, mother of 2, Nurse Practitioner and American, I can remember exactly where I was, who I was with and exactly what I was doing when PD passed away. I remember initially finding out that she was in the accident to just a few hours later when her passing was reported and I felt like I lost a hero. I have a much better understanding now of her role in the dilution of her marriage to the King. Just in the last 7 years have I really dedicated my personal time into doing deep dives into everything I could find on them, their ancestors and it hasn't changed yet. They absolutely fascinate me and I have such a enormous amount of respect for the late Queen Elizabeth and always will. I can think of no one else in my lifetime that I admire more and I could not BE more outraged at what Rachel Meghan Markle has done to that family. As much anger that I feel at Harry, I too, was in a 15 year relationship with a narcissist and I couldn't see it when I was in it either. It's taken me years..... almost 7 now and I am still sorting myself out. This is not going to end well for him and he is going to really need his family when it does because you can't imagine what someone you once loved can turn around and do to you. Some people just have no idea what's going on and I am sick watching this woman completely do her best to tear down her own children's birthright!!!!! What kind of sicko does that and why the hell hasn't someone stopped her yet? This behavior wouldn't be tolerated if it wasn't such a sick and twisted world we live in right now and right now I don't think I can be shocked anymore at their behavior.... but here I am, shocked again at the new low they've hit and the absolute useful idiots that are supporting them across my country. Someone needs to have both of them committed on a 72°psychiatric hold because they are really a danger to themselves and others. ❤️ from Pensacola

I feel so saddened for King Charles- he’s a sensitive man and has so much to cope with in losing his parents, while at the same time having his errant son betraying his family and his country. Your comments on living with a narcissist are valuable, and it’s easy to see why KC is holding back on stripping the Sussex’s of their titles. MM has her greedy eyes set on money, and she will be relentless in trying to get it.

Hello Lady whos cats name is Karen... I'm British a firm Monarchist, and used to be a devotee of PD Myself...Till I lived through the almost daily events of her, Much To Personnel Affairs splattered over the Daily papers in my country...One slip perhaps but by the 3rd...I was done. It was utterly clear Diana wanted out...to live her own life...BUT that was the total Opposite of what she kept saying! I'm a true believer Actions speak louder than words...and her actions...ensure she wold one day be told...enough is enough! And that's what happened...Even then Diana is on record for saying ,,,She Never wanted a Divorce..What!!! I still feel this was the biggest single sadness HM The Queen had to endure. The Heir to the throne...Being a single divorced man. Her own Knowledge of the Job and indeed The Queen would say how much she relived on the Support of Prince Phillip... The Queen Knew,,, Prince Charles... Would need the support and help...of someone Very Special to Him. That's why she promoted Charles and Camilla to Marry and Be King and at her behest...Camilla to be Queen. I like to Think she died happy knowing The King to be would be Fine!! Then the King to Be after him...would be fine...and so on.

I think the late Queen is one of the most interesting persons in our time. Born and not meant to be queen, probably just an ordinary girl, although royal, she had the most incredible path in life, and lived the Christian values. Duty, faith and humility. I admire her. Actually, three British women are the most interesting in my lifetime - the late Queen, Agatha Christie and Margaret Thatcher.

Hello from Singapore! This episode was lovely to watch and I can’t wait for part two. I loved all the intimate little details that Gyles had shared. Isn’t it just fascinating how much the world got to scrutinise the monarchy and yet how little one really knows about the late Queen. I truly love the insight on the type of principles the late Queen and Prince Phillip held. I especially hold close to my heart Prince Phillip’s view on looking outside of yourself. I find that my generation (I am 3 months older than Prince Harry) and younger are sometimes much to introspective. It’s not a bad thing but that there must be a balance and we do need to look outside of ourselves. Isn’t it curious that social media was intended to help us reach out beyond ourselves, but instead it seems to have made individuals become more self-centred at the same time?
@ritamarshall2644

You’re right, Social Media has done a lot to damage the self esteem of many. Even we older ones (I’m 75) can feel that we’re not all that we could be. I can say for certain that comparing oneself with others is a dangerous game.

The more we learn about the late gracious QE2, the more there is to love and respect. The world needs more people like her. I hope KCharles retains a lot of his mother’s good qualities, while moving the Monarchy forward to meet the challenges of the times. Her special-ness was appreciated the world over, judging by how much outpouring of emotion during the events of her passing. May she RIP and we are grateful to have her example to follow.

I could’ve listened to another full hour with this man! Sounds like his book will be a great read.

Ah, Jo, Delightful interview! Brought sunshine to a grey December afternoon in Virginia. With deft brushwork Brandreth paints a well studied, yet fresh portrait of Elizabeth II. Congrats. Look forward to Tuesday PART II and the Book.

HM Queen Elizabeth II was an actress - when required - a thousand times better and greater than Meghan, who's claiming to be an actress but actually does a lousy job on it.

What an intelligent and well informed man Gyles Brandreth is. I found him to be fascinating and articulate Buy his book, don't buy Harry's.

Thank you Giles, for bringing up that the Queen did not have favourites, I have been fed up with this narrative being toted recently. As a mother, you love all of your children and grandchildren equally, but there may be some that you are compatible with.

The Queen was fair-minded towards everyone - her own children and grandchildren and the families of the performers at Royal Variety shows. Great values

The Queen was a truly good person; take a look at the way she loves animals and how they were a huge part of her life; sharing every aspect her home. Animals; horses, dogs, cats, wildlife can tell if a person is consistently kind and thoughtful and importantly, gentle. Equally, they can also sense the opposite characters too. When Observing the two Princes,William & Harry playing polo, note how differently they interact with their horses. William will often reward the horse with a pat or an apple after the game. Polo is a highly competitive sport, and no-one likes loosing, but I have never witnessed William take his frustration out on his horse. Unlike Harry.

Giles is one of my favourite people. I remember him from those early days when was often on TV as President of the Cambridge Student Union, even then wearing his Jumpers. His wit, intelligence and humanity have always been there. This is one Royal book I will want to read.

It's now at a point where I believe King Charles III has one course of action to take - he must, must, must be a BADASS KING. He needs to play the long game until Coronation Day and then on that very day, with a stroke of a pen, he needs to strip them of the titles and line of succession, like a BOSS. This reality show is out of control with the lies and accusations and if KCIII wants to SAVE THE MONARCHY - he's going to have to act like a KING. It's not the first time in history that a prince had to be put in the tower for trying to usurp his King/father (I believe it was King John who tried 3 times). I just can't believe Harry is complaining about hierarchy in a monarchy. I can't believe in the trailer - IN THE TRAILER - he's already accusing his family of planting stories WITH NO PROOF WHATSOEVER! No the time is coming for the King to RULE LIKE A BOSS. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. Get rid of them - off with their titles and succession! First order of business after the Coronation. THEN he will be considered a POWERFUL KING who is fulfilling his duty to protect the realm and the Monarchy. BUT it MUST BE DEALT WITH. IT MUST. Markle is dangerous without any tether. Just like Trump. And she didn't sign an NDA - RELEASE THE BULLY REPORT WITh The AVIDAVITS! EVERY SHRED OF EVIDENCE MUST BE SHARED TO THE MEDIA AND REPORTED. Planting stories? How about planting the TRUTH!

There will never be another sovereign like Queen Elizabeth II and I am so thankful she doesnt have to see the mess that Harry has created in trying to destroy the Monarchy that she upheld

Giles, you are a national treasure and I wish you the very best for your book. I am writing from South Africa, so I am not sure I will be able to get my hands on a copy, but I am convinced it will be a bestseller. I do hope you will do an audio version, as I am sure it will be doubly delightful.
