This is a Motormouth couple car review of the updated 2024 Hyundai Elantra compact sedan. The 2024 Hyundai Elantra gets a refresh, this sedan offers a lot of value! We are driving the gas model with a 2L 4-cylinder matched to an intelligent variable transmission, 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque, FWD only. The 2024 Hyundai Elantra still has sharp, angular lines but a more streamlined front fascia and sculpted rear lower fascia compared to the outgoing model, it has a black grille, body coloured door handles, a new flat stainless steel Hyundai emblem, updated exterior lighting elements and sleek headlights making it quite a unique looking sedan.
This 2024 Hyundai Elantra model has some new safety features for 2024 like rear side airbags, a rear seat belt reminder and steering wheel haptic feedback added to lane keep assist, blind spot collision warning and rear-cross traffic alert.
The 2024 Hyundai Elantra cabin is modern and comfortable with standard cloth upholstery, available premium cloth which we have on our test model and new leatherette seating surfaces in light grey or black. There’s also a redesigned wireless charging pad and soft touch front door panels.
Standard 2024 Hyundai Elantra features include, an 8” touchscreen, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto. If you add the available 10.25” touchscreen with navigation which we have on our test model, you get wired Apple Carplay and Android Auto.
Other available 2024 Hyundai Elantra features include, a 10.25” digital driver display, wireless charger, 8-speaker Bose sound system, a heated steering wheel, hands-free power trunk, 64-colour ambient lighting and a moonroof. The Elantra does not offer ventilated fronts seats or heated rear seats and in the US, a heated steering wheel is not available.
2024 Hyundai Elantra fuel economy is good especially on the highway, the Elantra gets 7.6L/100 km, 31 MPG city and 5.7L/100 km, 41 MPG highway.
The 2024 Hyundai Elantra Essential starts at $24,506 CAD, Preferred $26,306 CAD, Preferred + trend package (our test model) $28,256 CAD and Luxury $30,506 CAD. In the US, SE $21,475 USD, SEL $23,425 USD, SEL Convenience package $25,175 USD and Limited $26,915 USD.
What’s new for 2024? The 2024 Hyundai Elantra gets a new front and rear design with LED taillights across the body, new wheel designs, a new flat stainless steel Hyundai emblem and more customer friendly safety and technology features like new rear side airbags, rear seat belt reminder and steering wheel haptic feedback added to lane keep assist, blind spot collision warning and rear-cross traffic alert. Updates to the interior include a redesigned wireless charging pad, new soft touch front door panels, new leatherette seat surfaces and new colour choices.

I have a 2017 Elantra. On the way to work one day the engine blew. After proving all my maintenance Hyundai replaced the engine. The same day I got the car back the engine light came on. Took it back and turns out the new engine was bad. They replaced the engine again. Each costing $7500. All covered under warranty. They had my car for 3 months. I got it back it back 3 days ago. So far so good.

Does your Elantra have the 2.0L or the 1.6L turbo? Also, how many miles were on the original engine when it blew? I owned a 2018 Elantra 2.0L from new up to 25k miles. The only engine issue it had was faulty ignition coils.
@theoutdoordude2259

It is the 2.0 and it had 87k miles. I also had the ignition coil problem at around 35k.

@@theoutdoordude2259 do you know specifically what went wrong with both engines? I know the 2019-2022 2.0L Elantras have an engine recall for faulty piston rings. They burn excessive oil and seize. I've not heard of that being a problem on the 2017-2018 though, so I'm wondering what's causing those engine failures.

HMG has *consistently* been in the top if not #1 (depending on model) in reliability for over a decade now. They've beaten *both* Toyota and Honda in previous years as a brand, they do brand rankings (CR) as well. Some still believe they're the same budget car company they were in the late 80s/90s. Check Consumer Reports, JD Power, Edmund's etc and see for yourself. Some in the general public's assumptions on reliability are outdated. Not just Hyundais but those who many assume are the most reliable. JD Power gives the 2023 Elentra a 79, Civic 81, Corolla 77 😉🤯 for example. The Corolla for instance is helped because of resale of 84 otherwise is below every other ranking including reliability. Another perceived metric that doesn't equal reality. That Toyota is more reliable when they're not, they're perceived to be so get more $ on resale.

I have one with 225K KM on it, and the only thing that broke was the front radar sensor. So far it has been one of the most reliable cars I've owned. Resale value is also good. Check out what used ones are selling for and you'll be surprised. What's awful about the dealerships? I have had no problem with the one in my area that I go to.

He is considering the Camry XSE Hybrid and for the 2nd vehicle the Kia Sportage Hybrid. Prior to me getting involved he was looking at the Cadillac ct5 v Blackwing and the Genesis G80! My current second car is a 2008 Elantra with 192k miles on board. That generation is bulletproof. I was interested in a 2024 as a replacement, but all the dealerships around me (Northeast U.S.) are some of the sleaziest goblins you'll ever see. So, no more Hyundai for me in the near future.

My wife has a 2020 Venue that also has the same 'IVT' and I'm always impressed with the zip it has when I drive it. Seems quicker off the line than my 2018 Elantra even though it has less horsepower. Seems like they did a good job with that transmission. I like the looks of this generation but what I hate is the size. We have smaller spots for compact cars in our building and my 2018 fits very well with a bit of room to spare, but my neighbour has a 2023 model and the back end sticks out a bit. I don't need a bigger car and if anything happened to my Elantra, I'd probably get a Venue to replace it.

A fun and zippy little car.Just as long as weather conditions are perfect,Definitely helps getting all season tires and not the hancook's they usually come with. It was terrible in the winter and not great on wet roads. I will say when i went to upgrade a little over 2 years ago...i saw the new Elantra model and was tempted to get it. I actually ended up getting a Camry. I think in the right region...Elantra is a great car, affordable and stylish.

Personally... this is just my own experience. Hyundai/kia dealerships are the worst I've been to. They are the most rude, stuck up places I've been to. This was mostly from their upper staff and that experience though just one in particular puts enough of a bad taste behind me that I'll never go to one. Then the FI guy from Hyundai actually came into my own workplace and he was as much of a pos out of work as he was at his own workplace. The recent Hyundai/Kia allegations I've been seeing don't paint it in a good light. I hope the incidents are isolated and I'm sure they are.... somewhat. (FI people are never painted in a good light, except I will say the one I worked with when I worked at a dealership 15 yrs ago was, but the market was different back then). But its enough to put me off to just say no. It shouldn't have taken that other person with the battery issue on their Ionic for nearly $60,000 for them to go as far as they did. They should have just helped their customer but they chose to not care until the customer got the media involved. If they hadn't, the person would had no choice than to write off their car.

Another great review! I love that you guys put out two reviews a week and your format is excellent! By the way, does anyone remember cars before the eighties? They used to make changes to the front and rear every year, so you could tell what year it was by looking at it. Now, most manufacturers make one mild mid-cycle refresh. I give Hyundai credit for being bold enough to make major changes with each re-design. Car design has become boring! Now, if Hyundai could build better engines and step up their reliability, they would be an even better value!

Peppier - the salesperson told me the hybrid in all the ratings is quicker - but the petro-only one feels faster when you drive them. Everyone complements the look of the car BUT other brand loyalists who are trolling 😅that said, the main reason I got black was to hide the grill, pull in the black wheels which I was not quite understanding. I looked into the iVT at the time as I was not wanting CVT. As noted, the iVT uses a VERY expensive chain and engineering around that - it should be more durable than CVT and cost quite a bit more to manufacture - again the components are more expensive. Unlike CVT the gear ratios do not need to be set during manufacturing - and can be quickly adjusted by the computer depending on how it is being driven. Yes on the armrest - cupholders too - the back seat area is huge and comfortable but could it be more boring.

I understand what Neil is talking about regarding refreshes. All manufacturers update their style often, and this has been true for nearly a century. Brands like Audi and BMW are selling consumers on looking like they are driving those luxury brands. Because of this, drastic changes are a bad strategy so their designs are more evolutionary. This hasn’t always been the case with those manufacturers and it wasn’t until they got that prestige that they could get away with it. Other manufactures from Hyundai to Toyota to ford have to provide exciting new refreshes to entice buyers into buying new models, Hyundai just seems to be more drastic with the changes about every 4 years.

Small bits are that the center stack controls are nice , the layout of the controls isn't as optimal as it could be. I think the Elantra could have gone more ambitious for the facelift. There's a lot of things they could have changed interior and feature wise. It looks a bit out of place with the new Kona, Santa Fe and the upcoming Sonata and Tucson facelifts. I would have liked to see the turbo hybrid system in it without the DCT, and newer infotainment and technology. I think due to being their cheapest car, they had to be restrained to undercut the competition. It is still better than the tiny and loud Corolla, and while the Civic is better, it costs more and lacks a hybrid currently.

My they have come a long way! One of my first ‘serious’ jobs was doing Auto Shows/Mall Shows (1984/5?). It was during the years of the Stellar and Pony (both standard with 4(!) speed manual transmissions) and as Hyundai were about to launch the Excel. I have always had a soft spot for the Hyundai… though not enough to buy one. They were considered a bit of a joke back then, but then again so was Honda and Toyota (a little less so though). These new/latest models of the company are damn impressive, understanding where they’ve come from… and this one is no exception. Well done them! Although sharp looking… It is still not for me (this model, and it’s styling), but maybe one day - a Genesis? Thanks for the video.

Oh nice future modern sporty design! Too bad no power seat! Great for young people including the hybrid one. Great show Andrea! 👍🏻👍🏻☕️☕️

Hyundai has been killing it with design lately… but this isn’t one of them. It looks very dated and looks like they are trying too hard. Hopefully, the next refresh will give people in that price range a nice looking vehicle. If you’re looking to go Korean o suggest the Kia forte. Much nicer.

Hyundai withholds a lot of features in Canada, like digital key options, etc. I don't know why but there is a long list of withheld features on their Genesis models. I suspect it is because they don't make as much profit on Canadian models. Pick a similar model in the US, apply the exchange rate and then compare to the Canadian price...the CDN cost is generally quite a lot less than the calculation. So they hold costly features back. Just a guess...

It looks nice, and has a lot of features. But I am looking for long-term reliability. Turning 60 this year and am wanting a car that will last me thru retirement. So my choice is coming down to Corolla/Impreza/Civic (2.0 only)/Mazda3 Not sure I trust the long term reliability of Hyundai/Kia

Hyundai is also catering to the Asian markets with the frequent styling changes because the Asian buyers expect "newness"... it's especially true in China 🇨🇳. I'm thinking that a Corolla Hybrid is more of a value in this class, with excellent fuel efficiency and resale value.

More room than competitors, but you might need to get one without sunroof if you are well above average.

That 2.0l engine should be in the Venue paired to an AWD. Since the Kona is a lot bigger now Hyundai needs to pump up the little Venue, not in size.... The Venue's size is perfect. The Elentra is a lot better, I don't like it but it's better.

@Motormouth *Regarding the so called "research" when it comes to marketing....most of the time when they do "clinics" it is conducted by a separate marketing research company, and that company will come back with the results that the company that paid them wants to see. It's pretty much nonsense.* When it comes to the manufacturing company costs which are a top priority they should in fact just place all the potential options in the vehicle that require extra hardware, and then allow the body control module to either activate them or not.* It's costing the mfr money to select certain units to have or not have that hardware in the end. The more volume they purchase from the vendor the less cost per item.

I love to rent the Elantra, it’s really fun and easy to drive. The new look is awful and hate the larger size. Reminds me of an 80’s car style.

Honestly, looks like someone stomped on the front of the car, it looks way too flat; resulting the angle of the slope coming to the front looking rather awkward. Suprised lots of people are liking the change, can't really get behind it myself.

I really like the looks of it, it really reminds me of my 2018 Civic which I just lost in an accident. I decided to buy a 2024 Elantra Luxury and give Hyundai a chance to impress me because the 2024 Civic isn't well equipped for the price they ask.
