The Volkswagen Arteon Shooting Brake is a new form factor of the VW Arteon, also available as a liftback. The Shooting Brake is kind of like an upgrade from the Volkswagen Golf R wagon, and it slots in as a sexier alternative to a Passat 206TSI wagon. They are all similar but different in small ways, especially looks. Which would you have? Or are you more into the 235kW Tiguan R SUV?
The Volkswagen Arteon Shooting Brake also competes with the Mazda 6 wagon, Audi A4 wagon and BMW 330i Touring.

I'd say Skoda is doing a bloody good job with the new superb and Octavia. but I prefer my lift back superb. still looks sporty for a tiny compromise on boot space.

So I had a superb wagon and moved to this R line wagon. There is no comparison. I loved my Skoda, however, not a patch on this! If I could add one think (without spoiling the look) it would be more room in the boot. I have 2 big dogs that will have to get used to less space than they had in the cavernous Skoda!

I actually went out and bought a new Arteon R Shooting Brake a few months ago after shopping around for a sporty wagon. Loved the Skoda Superb and the WRX Wagon but the Arteon was too gorgeous and comfortable to go past.

I took delivery of my 206TSI Shooting break just over three weeks ago and absolutely loving it. Previous car was a 2019 Mercedes-Benz C300 and the Arteon does not feel like a step down at all. The amount of room and the comfortable yet sporty drive is far superior than the C300, best car purchase I have made so far!

We secured the shooting brake in oryx white with the panoramic sunroof. We were first in Aus I believe.. and I'm starting to think ours may still be one of only a couple to have made it to our shores thus far. Since I also have a 200 series, there wasnt a need for another beefy suv in the house. We still needed space though (two kids seats) but I was also chasing a car a bit more exhilarating to drive. I think the comment that this is a car that you can get in and enjoy every day is very accurate. It ticks all the practicality boxes whilst still being a pleasure to drive day in day out. BMW 5 series and Audi A6 estates are too pricey imo to get trashed by family duties, so the Arteon was an attractive alternative to save a few bucks. The Passat model I found to be too Golf like, and I was looking for something a bit different and high end working with an 80k budget.

@@kiwiklogg The approach angle at the front seems more of a concern than the rear, but clearance has been good, and it doesn't scrape more than any other sedan/wagon.

I have a 2017 Passat R Line wagon and am looking at my next car soon. Basically this car is an extra $9k drive away over the new Passat R Line purely for looks.Admittedly, it looks that good, it’s a tough decision. After 5 years of my car I can say a bit more kick off the line would be good but taking for the family away on long highways, through mountains roads, overtaking huge trucks etc, absolutely unbeatable. The best.Favourite car ever and happy to get another one.

@8.31 & don't forget Tom the Alltrack. My wife went out today in her 2012 Passat wagon which I had washed and polished recently, and my word, it still looked good. Despite all the negative comments one reads about VW ( possibly from those who don't have one) their designs age well.

It’ll be interesting to see if the Arteon returns to the NZ market as well, good looking car, suits the lowline wagon look nicely. It’s got most things buttoned up rather well, great colour the only real gripes I have are I agree on the seat cooling and the less than ideal faux carbon fibre looking material in the seats and personally I would change the wheels

@@chasingcars I saw a brand new one this week in a car park. I also thought the wheels looked below par in real life, and on seeing it up close I still prefer the liftback. But would I pay the premium for this over a Passat wagon - maybe not.

I was disappointed with the Arteon SB. It was a looker and fun to drive but hard to live with. I had the 206TSI with all the extras. I found the ride to be harsh on country roads and highways. The overall tech pack was dated in terms of both software and hardware compared to our other new car. VW post sale service left a lot to be desired. I bit the bullet and traded out after 1500kms and am happy I did so.

Yeah, definitely - though it's definitely sportier than a C-Class wagon. The best replacement for the discontinued C-Class wagon would be the new S206 C-Class wagon available in Europe, but that Mercedes-Benz Australia decided to deny local buyers.

The arteon is a bit more up to date. It has the 7 speed wet clutch dsg versus the six speed in the Passat.

The big, long travelling gear lever is such a turn-off, it was ugly 15 years ago with their first dsg, a real stain on the cutting edge design. great review, very complimentary to hear Tom would own one.

The dsg shift in my 2019 Karoq is a very precise, short flick backwards, a pleasure to use.. It is spring loaded - you don't have to push it forwards.

Good review. The interior design looks better than the Audi A4 wagon, which now looks too "austere" since Audi removed the MMI controller & replaced it with a slab of black plastic & exposed cupholders. How does the engine/exhaust sound? You didn't give it a "boot" in the review, nor advised acceleration figures?

Thanks, Stephen. The 0-100km/h claim is 5.6sec. I'm sure it can do something in that vicinity. I would describe the power/torque as very much adequate. The engine sounds fine; the EA888 is actually a sweet-sounding unit, but many will want to disable the bassy artificial noise pumped into the cabin (and you can turn that off).

It may look better but (black plastic aside) A4 is a significantly better quality car overall. Slightly smaller yes, but much quieter and better to drive.

Arteon is quieter inside because it has a smaller boot, creating less resonance for road noise.

At 9:00 is the badge on the VW broken already, or is the camera active when you are driving forward as well?

That's the hidden rear-view camera. The VW logo will automatically flip up when put into the reverse gear, and the logo will resume after a short while of driving. So the reason is probably that the car has just reversed, then quickly started going and passed in front of the camera before the logo resumed.

You might also buy a Skoda Superb and be very smug with it. I tested the Scout a year ago and was tempted. You give up the arty appearance but get the same driving experience for $15k less DA.

It's a nice wagon and the design-forward approach will suit a slightly different buyer to the handsome but boxier, more pragmatic Passat. It's horses for courses, rather than generosity. I'd have the Passat!

The interior is almost identical to my 2016 Passat wagon, in fact I prefer the interior in the Passat. The 2016 Passat seats and upholstery are higher quality and it doesn't have these silly capacitive touch buttons everywhere. The price of this new model is outrageous.

I hate integrated head rest seats. I like a headrest I can adjust. Specialize in a car like this, that's general and not a specialized sports car. One seat does not fit all.

Nice car, but very expensive for what is basically a stretched Golf platform, not to mention quite outdated as it's 10 years old now. VW quite cleverly milked MQB for all it was worth, but it's certainly not worth that kind of money today

Thanks, Luke. Golf R wagon is certainly an interesting, quicker alternative, but the Arteon/Passat-grade interior is higher-quality than the Golf. The softer leathers and plush plastics give it away.

I can't make my mind around these cars ... All manufacturers are making their vehicles look soo sporty with soo much kits and low profile tyres while not changing the dynamics ... Like still a 2.0 litre - ok - still front wheel drive based .... Lol ... No manual transmission for enthusiasts .... This want the case before ... I would recommend a genesis g70 or base stinger ....

@@cyrilmatthew2995 I quite like Audis and yeah, at a stone's throw in price from something more upmarket the Arteon is hardly just a "family car" I can only speak for myself, but I gravitated toward it because I'm a VW fan. Started with a last gen Jetta S, moved to Jetta R-Line after the refresh, considered a GLI or GTI but when the Arteon rolled around I thought the styling was so nice it just spoke to me. I also moved in with my girl and we got a dog so the space became a godsend. A nice little bonus is there are plenty of Audis on the road but I almost never see another Arty, so it's nice to feel special ^^ (I also had it tuned, negating some common criticisms)

VW's strategy has been transverse for the mainstream/semi-premium stuff for a long time - and it's a very good drive with the Haldex AWD. But yes, if you want RWD, you'll need to buy a BMW 330i or Genesis G70 Shooting Brake.

Lovely car aesthetically, internally and engineering-wise, but the DSG is a disappointment. Slow take off and ponderous. Tested this version and a Passat wagon and oh dear, am I ready for a pause before I get moving? No! Tested the latest Outback too and its CVT is woeful and needs a a serious shove to get it going. I think wagons are a great design. I've had 7 over the past 20 years. They surpass SUV's by a country mile in handling, subtlety, practicality and utility, but I yearn for a manual transmission. I think in time we will lament the death of the manual transmission as car control will be less up to the driver and more reliant on the automated electronica constantly being added to improve driving. I don't think so.

If you want instant take-off response, use the brake as if it were the clutch on a manual car. Under way, the VAG 7-sp DSG is faster & smarter than a manual box. My MY2021 DSG is not quite as good as the BMW 8-sp on the X3 for take-off, but fine elsewhere.

Maybe it's because I used to own a Volkswagen with DSG (and a less hardy, dry-clutch one at that!) but you learn to drive around its characteristics. Not saying that's as good as a quick-witted and intuitive torque converter (ZF 8sp tuned by BMW?), but the DSG quickly fades into the background. You basically accelerate with deliberate linearity like in a manual.

@@chasingcars Thanks for your reply. Yes, you do learn to drive around the limitations of the DSG, but I truly loathe these boxes. I'm less inclined to use the brake as suggested by David Cox, as I have tried this and find it counter intuitive. My 2016 Scirocco's DSG is like a nanny and from the get-go I found it infuriating that in semi-manual mode, it won't let you change down when you want for instance 4th to 3rd as I might in a manual. That still drives me mad 60 k later. Fortunately, most of my daily driving is in a 10 year old VW GOLF GTD 6 speed manual with circa 385,000k on the clock and I relish its reflexes and how i can extract so much enjoyment out the same chassis as the Scirocco and feel in complete control. I do need to change up to a wagon as the Golf is showing its age in certain ways, but I am not grey-haired or jaded enough yet to settle for DSG wagon, even though I am somewhat of a VW diehard. For me, all the luxe and tech of the new breed of cars is taking away the purity of driving and introducing too much padding of our basic skill set in driving. No wonder so many of the veteran car reviewers (Needell, Harris Metcalfe, even Jay Leno) still hanker after manuals. Ho hum.
