UPDATE!! I just found an amazing addition that will make oil changes a breeze. This little funnel screws in place of the drain plug and will prevent oil spilling everywhere.
+++ Oil Change Funnel: amzn.to/2AjWI6T +++
If you just got a cool blue Costco generator powered by Yamaha then you may want to upgrade a couple things. Here are the first 4 things that I added to my A-iPower inverter generator. Let me know what you did to your Costco Generator!
0:23 - Hour Meter --- Keep track of your oil changes and service intervals. I opted for the style that wraps around the spark plug. Blue gets style points to match the generator.
+++ Get Hour Meter Here: amzn.to/38kYYHv +++
1:02 - Magnetic Drain Plug --- Capture any metal shavings and increase your Yamahas life. Highly suggest using for the break-in period!
+++ Get Drain Plug Here: amzn.to/3inKAms +++
1:55 - Synthetic Oil --- I'm personally using motorcycle-grade oil, you can use 10w-30 or 10w-40 when its hot outside. Buy a gallon and it will last multiple oil changes, plus you won't have an excuse to change the oil when your hour meter tells you it's time! Owners manual suggests every 20 hours to change the oil. You could probably double that with synthetic but I'm going to be cautious and change every 20.
+++ Synthetic Oil: amzn.to/31z1gl6 +++
2:46 - Ethanol-Free Gas --- Also called "Clear Gas" this well save your carburetor! If you let ethanol laced gas sit in your carb, the ethanol creates a sticky gel-like substance that requires taking the carb apart and cleaning every part. So save yourself the sanity, and ditch the corn.
If you found this useful please give it a thumbs up! It truly inspires me to make more videos!
Have some upgrades that you highly suggest? Please throw them in to comment section! Everyone watching would love to know how to pimp out there Costco Generator!
*Also, the links to Amazon are affiliate links and Jeff Bezos will share some pocket change with me so that I can keep making videos like this! ;)

Purchased mine at Costco about two years ago with the intended use of supplying power at various projects for extended times. With that in mind, as of today the generator has accumulated 2766 hours, and is still running strong. Presently the unit has been supplying power continuously since last Thanksgiving with the only shutbowns occuring for oil changes. The only aftermarket additions are a magnetic dipstick, extended run fuel cap, 5 gallon fuel tank with inline filter and an hour meter. That's it. After the initial break-in period with mineral oil, only Walmart 10-30 full synthetic has been used. Oil changes happen every 150 hours. Spark plug is changed every 1000 hours. Air cleaner washed and re-oiled as needed. Oil consumption is minimal to trivial with no oil added between changes. This has been a truly reliable unit.

Hi...can you pls advice where to get replacement parts online? Mine has only 120 hrs and it will need replacement of the inverter module ( overload without any load connected) and i do believe wont be worth it.

Thanks for the possible additions, not sure I'll go for the premium gas because being at the mercy of PG&E I won't be putting it away for long lol

In that case, I would suggest synthetic oil and the magnetic dip stick. I've been running the dipstick for over 20 hours now and definitely noticed it picking up a fair about of crap! Also just a note, I did a test with a full tank of gas at 90% load and I ran out of fuel in 4 hours exactly. (eco mode on after warming up for 5 minutes)

Everybody relax. Every now and then costco switches up their products and stuff you wish you could buy is gone. This generator in May 2020 is available on ebay free shipping for $439. Same model and I'm sure it has a yamaha engine. It's an A-ipower generator. So impressed with this I ordered an a-ipower 15000kw clean sine wave energy generator to run my plasma cutter. I have a feeling with the corona virus were going to have a disruption in our supply of these generators.

Good suggestions for sure. I’m questioning the motorcycle synthetic oil as it has additives for wet clutch applications. And where did the hour meter and dipstick come from?
@Svaren
@Svaren 4 года назад
Great point! Perhaps some top of the line Synthetic for cars, or just the parts house brand of synthetic. Valvoline makes Napas oil. You'll find the hour meter here: amzn.to/38kYYHv And the dipstick here: amzn.to/3inKAms Thanks for watching and commenting!

I have experience with a number of new generators and have a couple of notes to add to your video. Generally manufacturers recommend a break-in period of 5 hours and they recommend that you do not use synthetic oil during that period as it hinders the break-in. Afterwards synthetic oil makes complete sense. Also this generator is rated for ethanol fuel up to 10% or E10. I don't know exactly how they achieve that rating, maybe with better metallurgy as FML tends to break down certain metals like aluminum. But in California clear gas can be very hard to find.
@cprendon3
@cprendon3 4 года назад
Also about the only fuel additive that helps to counteract the effects of ethanol is stabil 360. Highly recommended to be run all the time. Modern fuel had such a short shelf-life. Generally one to two months according to manufacturers.

@@cprendon3 Thank you for dropping your knowledge here for more to see! You bring up some great points and I hope that they provide value to others here in the future!

What I've heard is similar, you wouldn't want to run synthetic right off the bat. And in Kaliforniastan probably the only non-ethanol is going to be at a racing gas shop. You know, Gov Gavin Nuisance wouldn't have it any other way....the little people have to check with the gasoline overlords before doing something THAT risky! lol

Could you tell me (us) the actual magnetic oil cap part no.? I have the same generator model as you. It looks like a WEN 55201 Magnetic Oil Dipstick, that fits several manufacturers. I don't want to have to mail back a part with the wrong thread size. Thanks!
@Svaren

Here’s the exact drain plug I use: amzn.to/3inKAms So long as the threads are M18 x 2.5 then you’ll be good! I believe the part number is B07643J11X

@@Svaren I appreciate your prompt reply. Yes, you purchased the WEN 55201, that obviously fits your Yamaha, which is the same model generator as mine. I'll be ordering the same WEN product, from the same link you provided. Thanks!

I can't get ethanol free gas where I live but I can get VP T4 100 octane power sport fuel that I run in my bikes, talk about always having a clean carb and it is still good after a year properly stored. Wonder if I should start using it in my generator? Suggestions?
@Svaren
@Svaren 3 года назад
I wouldn't bother with the 100 octane fuel in these little things. I don't think the compression ratio is high enough and you may do more damage. I'd just add some fuel treatment to every tank or some stabilizer before winter.

The cheap oil they provide you is for breaking in the engine only. Do not use synthetic oil until the engine has been broken in.

First start with good, clean fuel, a good spark plug, and a clean air filter. Heck even a fresh oil change to see how the oil is looking. How many hours are on the machine?

Don't use synthetic oil for breaking in an engine. The friction moidifiers will prevent the rings from breaking in properly. If you want to be special buy some real \engine break in oil. That sz80 engine is ripe for a propane conversion
@Svaren
@Svaren 4 года назад
That’s a great point about synthetic for breaking in the engine. I’ve definitely been think about a propane conversion. Especially when dry camping with our 5th wheel, it would be nice to have one less fuel source to pack!

Never heard of synthetic to not be used for break in. Why do most car manufacturers use it? Nothing in Manuel about break in.

Yeah, I concur on the cheap (included) oil to do the break in. Use it and then switch to full synthetic for the scheduled maintenance oil changes thereafter. Good tips! 🤙🏻

I break in all my engines on synthetic oil and not only does it not damage them they last forever. Many high-performance engines come from factories with synthetic as the factory fill. I wish the wives tale of not breaking in an engine on synthetic oil would finally go the way of the dinosaur like it should. I remember for many many years people said if you set your plastic taste car battery on concrete it will short it out and ruin it another stupid wives tale plastic is an insulator. Try It My Way once and you'll never go back.

Synthetic oils and the myths/stories surrounding it have been quite ludicrous! I personally enjoy larger gaps between oil changes and knowing that synthetic keeps things clean for longer!
