Harley-Davidson is not know for suspension, even new the suspension systems leave a lot to be desired. Riding a Sportster or Dyna you likely know this all too well, even the older touring models with air suspension have their fair share of issues. But if you've looked into upgrading or replacing your suspension you've likely been left with some sticker shock. The good news is you don't have to turn some no name off brand either. Progressive suspension offers some excellent alternatives, a good warranty and much improved ride that won't leave you with a credit card bill.

On the front I installed Hyperpro suspension, Dutch company. Set up is specially for the HD Touring. Rear still the standard air shocks. Not great but for now still ok. Regular checks if the air remains at pressure. Hyperpro rear shocks on the wishing list. 😊

ohlins in rear to replace those stock air shocks. We like the ohlins. Front is stock till I talk myself into replacing them (soon). I found that one of the biggest improvement in ride came from a new set of tires.

I went with the race tec emulators on the front end of all my harleys and a little bit stiffer springs. This is a huge improvement, with doing the work yourself it will run about 350 if I remember right. This includes new seals and bushings and oil, it takes about an afternoon with taking your time.

I went with Legends 13" for my Iron 1200. Since my legs are so short I went with a 1" lowering blocks. The best upgrade that I have done. This is the second set of shocks that I went with. The first was the progressive's stock size shocks. They weren't any better then the originals to me. They were the 412 progressives.

I broke the bank by going with revo a 13 inch heavy duty on my 21 SG,yes i ride over 500lbs at times,i adjust the sag 1 inch like they said to do,no matter if i ride solo or 2 up couldn't be any happier without any bottoming out anymore. I did tried the progressive 412 and i had to returned them because it bottomed out riding solo. Break the bank to get the best and forget the rest because by the time you have to replace the shocks equals the price for the expense ones just like buying a cheap gas grill it not going to last as long as a weber. Lol

Excellent video. I did a full replacement a couple of years ago with Progressive products. I put in the 444 series shocks and the monotube kit in my forks. Big improvement for my 2011 dyna superglide. The shocks are really good and significantly improved stability in cornering at higher speeds. The monotube kit greatly improved handling and feel. I only wish they offered a slightly heavier spring for the monotube kit. I'm a bigger guy 225+ and I have to have the preload cranked all the way up to max avoid bottoming out the forks on bigger bumps.
@GixxerFoo

That's the same reason I am looking at new springs on my forks, big bumps and they will bottom out and shock your hands. I imagine that bike handles really good with all that suspension work, it's well worth the investment!

My 2014 SGS is the second bike now I’ve put Terry Cable shocks on. OEM is 2” of travel, and these, with out changing the ride height, give and extra 1” for 3” of travel. Bike does not bottom out and the ride is great. But I did not stop there. I changed out the front fork dampener with one from Terry Cable. Did as much front end as the rear shocks did. Same springs and oil. Now my bike rides incredible. OEM’s are harsh at slow speed and mushy at high speed. This make the bike handle like a Ferrari. :) Smooth running down the road and tight in the twisties. Best of both worlds. If you find him at any of the bike shows, he’ll change out your shocks on site and typically gives discounts too. Highly recommend these two in combo. Killer set up. And thanks for another great video.

@@GixxerFoo No, not too bad. I think I paid $650 for the first set and a little more for the second. The great thing too is that he customs makes the shock to fit your weight. Then does the pre load. That change in the front fork dampener was really something though. Made the bike handle incredible. And it's not svelte by any measure! LOL GL

I bought my first set of progressive shocks back about 1988 for my '79 Bonneville. Been a big fan ever since. It's hard to beat them for the price. I have a set of the monotube cartridges in my soft tail now. You didn't mention them as an upgrade for the front, but they are reasonably priced and a definite improvement. Great video, as always.

They have some fork spring kits, l am actually looking at a set for my bike. My front end is too soft, l'd like just little more in the front since it dives hard under braking.
@scottarmstrong1172

@@GixxerFoo That will definitely take care of your brake dive, especially braking into turns. Typical progressive deal, softer on the top and stiffer as you go down. I hammer the back roads pretty hard so I like it a little on the stiff side.

Almost everyone I know or have met does not think twice about changing their suspension. That baffles me (no exhaust pun intended) because it transforms your ride. Buy once cry once is something I read and agree with 100%. Buy the most you can afford even if it means delaying your purchase. I also recommend a shock that can be rebuilt like the baseline Ohlins S36e emulsion shocks. They also custom-fit the spring weight to your riding style, rider weight, and motorcycle. They can be purchased for $600 list or less if you shop around.

I updated mine with Progressive.. You just have to hold your nose on price... With both hands. It's absolutely criminal for some of those prices. Even the base hardware is ridiculous. Having said that, if you lay some serious miles on your ride, it'll be worth it. It's one of those items that's not a bad idea to open a small savings account for... and auto drop 10 bucks a week in it. Do it over the winter, and you'll have the cash for the spring sales.. No pun intended.

When I was finally fed up of bottoming out my dyna, I started replacing everything springy. Got fork springs from progressive and ordered some eBay special jbs hd rear shocks figured it wouldn’t hurt my feelings if they were crap for 150 bucks. Slapped it all together and had to move the forks up a tad in the triple trees. Got it all adjusted and it’s night and day difference. With a passenger it’s extremely smooth in the back. With just me at 230lbs they are a little rough but a lot better than the stock shocks. Highly recommend. Also don’t be afraid to adjust the nitrogen pressure in them if you have a tank. Mine run perfect at about 20psi. They came with about 80 in them. So just get everything dialed in and it’ll ride like a dream

Good overview, many thanks :) Absolutely agree re the 412s. I put OEM-length 412s on my 2011 Dyna years ago, and still use them (plus a Progressive spring in the front). They are not brilliant, cutting-edge performance. BUT, in my humble (though extensive) experience they are the minimum setup HD SHOULD have put on its bikes as standard. The OEM Dyna suspension was so woefully bad it was, (again imho) actually dangerous:(

I would LOVE to see a video on the pros and cons and effects of putting longer rear shocks on a bike, or shorter rear shocks. It’s a common practice so a comprehensive video would be awesome I have noticed people are putting longer rear shocks on the M8 Softails. Often 1” longer or more. What I don’t understand is how you can do this without totally disrupting how the bike’s suspension is designed to operate??? Surely a 1” longer shock will move the swing arm closer to the bump stops at one end ? and further away at the other ? This would result in the suspension often “topping out” and at the other end of travel the shock would over compress and get damaged or destroyed ?? as the bump stops wouldn’t be there to save it ?
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 3 года назад
You get more suspension travel but you also raise the center of gravity at the same time. There's quite a bit to suspension, not a bad video idea at all.

@@GixxerFoo my apologies, I should have said longer “clevis” in my post above. The shocks I am seeing them fitting, don’t have any more travel, just a longer clevis. Also a bike like a M8 Softail has 4.4” of rear wheel travel, so no matter what shock is fitted ... that 4.4” range of travel isn’t going to change due to the bump stops at either end. So it makes sense that fitting a longer shock will give you more downward travel, as it lifts the back of the bike up and away from the bump stop it would hit when “bottoming out” but it will give you less upward travel before “topping out”. This is because it has moved the bike’s swing arm closer to that bump stop. So a longer shock is changing where the bike’s swing arm sits in its range of up and down travel

And my second question is I don't mind to spend the money compared with Legends on the rear and on the front obviously there's a big money difference there, does anybody have an opinion which way they would go with cuz the Legends are also adjustable but they're not adjustable in the front just the rear the dirty works is adjustable all the way around and it has little gauges it will tell you exactly what pressures in the front and in the rear separately??

S&S is one of the few manufacturers of aftermarket Twin Cam style engines. S&S paid for rights from Harley, learned after the EVO about weak patents. That's why we see so many EVO clones out there on the market. Another solid twin cam designed engine is from JIMS, they have some serious race engines which produce close to 200 horsepower from a twin cylinder.
