I have worked at UPS for 44years. Started out as an unloaded the became a package sorter.I worked at two hubs. I started out on day sort, then had to go to the night at BEDFORD PARK. Transferred to twilight then moved to CACH in Hodgkins. Later returned to the DAY SORT for the last 16 years. I considered Package Car driver but I'm glad I didn't. My attendance was in good standings. I had started to have taken days off due to a change in my lifestyle. I hated missing days, then one morning woke up with pain in shoulders. It was then I decided maybe I should consider retiring. As of March 1st, after moving towards retirement, I finally left UPS for the last time.
Drive bro ups the best job without having to go to school it might be tough at first but be a man not a bi*ch it’s gonna pay off in the future man making 6 figures driving package or feeder you get great benefits all around you will be good .
@@TheQuintessentialMan. it’s hard hard work…. Lots of variables, that make it hard. Hours, the weather, the weekend work is a thing for awhile when new. It’s just plain ole hard work. But don’t let that scare you off…it’s the best thing I ever committed to! Driving. I’m a 30 year driver. In Redmond Washington. Happy to answer any questions.
Unloading and loading are both SEVENTY percent mental and THIRTY percent physical. If you know a thing or two about physics and energy conservation. Less movement in the power zone is definitely more. There are ways to make heavy packages travel further with 1 move than newbies often do with 3 or 4 moves. Watch for opens, leakers, HAZMATS, and Irregulars. Remember that preparation is huge no matter what shift anyone chooses to work . Handle only what your arms can reach and don't worry about everything else. Always use your HEADS Hydrate, Exercise, Alleviate stress, Diet right, and sleep/stretch daily and you'll be fine. If there's any tip I can give to new hires or temps, it's pick the brains of old school workers and get to know what it is that drives them to keep coming back to the daily grind.
As a belt tender, the supervisors do not train these unloaded right. I use to unload and learned to do DA, small sort, bagging, loading etc. Its nice know the operation within the whole wearhouse.
Working at UPS, probably has to be my second favorite job of my entire life. Met so, so , so many of my Friends/Work Colleagues/school colleagues there.
Grabbed a part time for the benefits I work from 11pm-3/4am it's pretty easy & at some points your just standing in your load station w no packages coming down & times goes by pretty quick just put your air pods on & load some boxes doesn't get more simple than that. Joined to eventually get my CDL and a guy I met there is about to retire after working at ups for 15 years he joined when he was 20 & he's on his way to retire at 35 off of UPS. His kids are set as well. Definitely UPS > Amazon, FedEx & USPS
They might have something that you can retire after 15 years of service but I am sure it is not enough to live on ! They did mention his kids are set to ! So in my opinion he got Social Security Disability for some reason ! Possibly mental reasons ? Or damaged bone joints arthritis from repetitive motion ? I would call it a scam a tremendous amount of people seem to be able to pull that off now a days !
Something ain’t adding up with this story. I’ve been at UPS 12 years now almost 13 and me nor anyone else I know there can retire after 15 years and still survive let alone live comfortably
I have worked there for 2 years now and I have even done package delivery to so yes the company pays medical but if you become part of management you have to pay cuz you know longer can be in the union.
It’s about to be my third week at Ups and it’s very physical, not what I’m use to that’s for sure , I work in small sorts and even that can get crazy...when I had orientation it was only for a day and we went to training right away that next day. One thing that a manager said to us was if you’re getting frustrated or overwhelmed just remember they are just boxes...it has really stuck with me and helps me push through a stressful day.
I quit post 2 and a half weeks ago post working 6 weeks. They told us 17 a hour they paid 15 and it took a month for them to correct it. I never got a break yet they never paid for me not getn q break. They always screw u ur hours and I yet to be paid my last 2 paychecks. F ups I'm getn a attorney
I worked at ups for 2 years here in Missouri and its a well good job I started off as a package handler then i went to shorter then i went to drive the ups trucks the 18 wheelers and it was amazing i loved everyone there and great staff supervisors loved them but i left because i got a dream job i always wanted which is law enforcement and now im here.
I work as a loader in Portland, Oregon and making 27.00 since September in February it will drop back down to 21.00, they hired 27.00 to start in Sept. To then drop to 21.00. Every year the increase pay in September for the upcoming peak season. You get over time after only 5 hours of work. Even you only work that one day. I guess the pay is different all around the country where I find that Portland is #1 in pay
@Brian Hamilton, Since the union is involved, it's my understanding that the pay is the same all over the US for a certain job. That's why where I live it's great pay but you go to Dallas and it's no more than working at McDonald's.
5+ years, actually working in the area of XR building simulations for new employees. UPS is a big company with many opportunities to go in different directions. Pilots, Drivers, Programmers, etc. One of the few companies that try to keep you if you are good at what you do.
Please if you can, tell me more details. State you live in, local union, salary, etc. I always want to hear positive regards from UPS. Theres a few negative comments here and there. Thanks!
I was thinking of applying for a driver spot but here in my area and a 50 mile radius there really isnt anything available. All the package handler spots are part time but I need full time. I do see a position for a Warehouse LV which is full time and It looks like a forklift driver/warehouse worker spot. I think I might like something like that. Have you any knowledge of those type positions there at UPS? Thanks
15.33 an hour now for package handler, there 3 months received the email to start driver training. Driver helper wage 19 an hour from thanksgiving to Christmas. As a part timer you are entitled to 3.5 hrs minimum per day, you can learn to move trucks in the yard if on nights for pre load the next day. Free medical kicks in after 8 months.
@@repentandfollowjesuschrist6170 15.33 now, yard switchers possibly an extra 10 cents more. Hang in there with a CDL and always check the board for openings
I went from working on aircraft for 7 years at United airlines covid hit and times wery really uncertain so I left United and went to work on aircraft for UPS best decision I've ever made....
I worked at ups when I was 18. 1998. I was convinced to leave my union position after a year or so for a supervisor position in the early am. I was 18 and 130 pounds. No one wanted to hear shit from me. I ended up leaving with my tail between my legs. Moved out west, did ecstasy too much got sick of myself and joined the coast guard. I learned a lot while at ups though and was able to draw on those lessons in other positions in life. It was an experience I was glad to have.
The worst thing you could do, is let them convince you to become a sup😂 they tried that with me, but I knew better. Nope, just give me that driver position😂🤣 it's not worth the stress and headaches
Both these replies sound like weak men that don’t have the fortitude to meet a challange. I’m okay with that though, you keep being weak I’ll take the promotion for you.
Hi Brian, did UPS interview you when you first came in, or did they just have you fill out the application, and then did a background check on you. Did UPS also require a resume? If you could let me know. Thanks.
Good luck with your job Brian, after a year RU still with UPS?? Great company to work for, yeah dirty tuff work. But the best job I ever had, second to none - worked until Dawn. Met great co-workers, friends and camaraderie. Looking to return, work in the Newark or Philadelphia HUB.
You must work at another company than the UPS , my daughter works a ups warehouse and she don’t don’t get any benefits for “9” months before she get any benefits. Also she only gets 18 to 23 hrs. A week
2:55 at FedEx peak season suck because company take your weekends. So you have to forget about your dreams (Self employed), won’t be able study on your days off, parent that have kids for the weekend.
Yes! Not sure exactly how warehouse managers choose who is at which station, but there was 3 smaller females doing "small sort". Where they assemble 3 - 10 tiny packages into a larger zip up container. It kind of looks like an oversized pencil case. They weigh less than 5 lbs when full for sure.
Hi. Heavy packages aren't that much of a big deal. Of course, anything heavy will be on the bottom and depending on the size of the package, and how close the rollers are positioned near your wall, any heavy can be rolled to the floor then pushed to the wall. (This is what I do....unless it's a hazmat or fragile)
Just started working there this week, they raised the pay rate for part time package handler to 22$/hour which is great, but for me first week is really tiring, I basically load the trucks with heavy packages up to 70lb. or more, a lot of bruises on my forearms, some cuts at the back of my hand, and after the first two days everything hurts and sores, I had to take pain killer the next day in order to continue working, but that's probably because I never exercise before and just get into this job certainly, I was supposed to load at least 300 packages per hour onto the trucks, but I was really slow since most of them are too heavy for me. I learned to bring gloves and I'm thinking of long sleeves but it was too hot for that because there was no air conditioner or fans or anything because I think the building I work at was an ancient one so it's really old. Wouldn't recommend for someone who never exercise and skinny like me(I weigh only 120lb.) but since the pay is good and with a lot of benefits I'll have to endure it, maybe I'll get use to it in a couple more weeks or so, once I built up more of my stamina.
Hi sounds like your hub or preload ? If preload i was poo then became great . Did it for 1 year & a half . It’s a lot of work but being agile and knowing where your gonna place the packages is always a go too . Also try stacking some small ones together to bring in at once . STAY HYDRATED it’s definitely hot , also stretching and even try getting there a few minutes before start time so you can get some work done before it gets hectic just some tips . 💪🏾🥇
@@UchihaVengeance- Hey thanks for the tips, I've gotten used to it now after a little over a month, some of my muscles are still sores and my legs are still hurt from all the walking standing and climbing, I don't know if it's preload but they called us PCM. Question: Do you know what the exact pay rates are cuz when they let me fill in the union membership application they told me to fill in 22/hour but when I got my paychecks it was only 21/hour so idk which is the correct one, if you know please let me know.
@@sambatphu806 not sure what pcm would mean . As far as pay rate in my area stating 14 and some change. Once your there for a year you start to get a raise every august I’m pretty sure . Also not sure if I mention in my last comment but try to keep track of when you make up to a year . Should get a email but it’s always better to mark it so you get your vacation time. I had to go to my supervisor and ask ya know might be different for you.
UPS WHERE 60% OF THE EMPLOYEES ARE PART TIME.. THEY ARE EXHAUSTED,DISGUSTED AND BROKE..NEVER MADE MORE THAN $31K YR AFTER 12 YRS..DONT BELIEVE THE HIGH WAGE HYPE..UPS IS AWFUL
I was told I would get health benefits after 400 hours. After I hit my 400 my manager said oh wait it’s 9 months so I left to go to Amazon where I got my medical and paid time off on day 1 plus paid holidays. Ups can’t keep employees because it takes so long to get medical, time off and holidays! Ups could keep the good / great workers if they would offer more on day 1
Driver positions are great if you want to work your life away. They get paid good and it's "relatively" easy work. I just didn't like signing my life away to be a driver for 60+ hours a week. I enjoy free time and want to continue my education. If you are fine with being worked to the maximum then its a gig for you.
If you worked 60 hours a week then that's on you. The union is there to protect you, use it. After 50 you can say absolutely not and there ain't a thing they can do about it.
I worked for 14 years as a package handler. I would be interested to hear your opinions about this job if you stuck with it for more than 3 years. I regularly loaded 1400 packages in a 4 hour shift. I found some cool bosses with a lot of mean ones who were really mean. In Michigan, the buildings were heated to 40 degrees but in the winter time they opened all the doors for semis and so the building was 5-10 degrees. I was paid 22k a year for part time work with vacay and health insurance. Its a good part time job for high school education. However, I found it to be a toxic working environment. You mentioned that you get tuition reimbursement of 5K however that was only for management not union employees. In Christmas we would would 9-11 hour shifts with one 10 minute break. I quit because it wasn't a good job for someone in their 30s or 40's I also don't think its possible to make 80K a year as a part time preloader. Seems misleading.
Be wary of the Teamsters pension especially from the western states that holds the Local 435 pension. It's been sending out mailers that unless they get a Congressional bailout they have a good chance of insolvency.
UPS management don’t care about people. They care about profits, numbers, period. They are excellent at producing revenue and built a magnificent, finely tuned machine.Unfortunately, they have no soul, no conscience in dealings with people. I know, this is my 44th year with the company. Why am I here?? For the money, baby!!$$$$$$Im a driver, I totally love and appreciate my customers, love my fellow drivers!!!💕💕💕💕I totally mistrust UPS MANAGEMENT. THEY illegally prevented me from driving for 8 years. The jokes on them. This is my 29th year as a driver. All the dishonest managers who kept me out of driving are long dead. Poetic justice. I was told to my face, I will never drive for UPS. I laugh all the way to bank every Friday!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Dude..no company ultimately cares about its employees. Thats why the unemployment office exist. Do your work, clock out, go home and collect your $$ friday. Stop looking for a pat on the back and a cookie.
You just summed it all up in a single paragraph. The first day that I ever went out to train with an on road sup doing the driving he stopped for lunch at 6pm and did paper work for about 30 minutes on the "lunch hour". However, the money was always good along with the benefits.
@@bingoplayer is 100k+ a year worth your life? My dad worked at UPS for 40 years. Brian I am weighing my options between Walmart and UPS. 1. Does UPS's tuition assistance program pay for books? 2. Does the program pay for tuition upfront or on the backend? 3. Does program limit which degrees that can be pursued?
As far as I know, the pay depends on the school and probably hub. There’s a certain list of schools around me that UPS would pay for upfront. But the one I chose and many other are paid afterwards depending on a passing grade
Don’t ever work at Walmart bro. I worked there for the past year. Worst job I have ever been and I worked at two different Walmarts because we moved across country. Terrible both locations. @@rudyisog702 drivers get the most hours. But if you build up seniority in the building you can get more hours. Most positions get almost the same hours; unload is done first, then sort/smalls then the loaders all in the same hour. But if you really want more hours you need seniority that allows you to stay longer than others. I have 4 years seniority that allows me to start 30 minutes early and when we’re done I have the right to choose to leave first, or stay til the end. I want hours so I stay longer than anyone else in my area. We also have another area where we repack boxes and with seniority we’re able to get an extra 1+ hours after shift there. Moral of the story, I’m able to get nearly full time hours with seniority and the position doesn’t necessarily matter.
