By representing a country known for its racial homogeneity, the biracial tennis champion is also challenging what it means to be Japanese.

She is from Japan since her mother is japanese and that is were she is born and no one can take that away from her, however she is not Japanese due to her not being raised in Japan and spending most of her life in the USA. I would like to thank the Japanese tennis association for sponsoring her and giving her the option to play professional tennis for them, she done her birth nation proud.

@@stripmakah215610 That statement is totally factually incorrect. It would make sense if you started it "I think" - then everyone would understand that it is just an opinion. After a little reading on the topic, most people would realise that the statement lacks all nuance and is incorrect on every level beyond one of the parent columns on a birth certificate and 50% of the genetic input - from multiple nationalities, the multiplicity of social and cultural identity threads, and the biological and zoological inapplicability of the concept of race to humans.

All these comments from people who didn't watch the video but just read the headline alone. Y'all are fools. The video already states that her dad is Haitian and that she holds citizenship to the US and Japan. Yet, some people are still commenting "Haitian Japanese. Stop erasing her Haitian identity". As a Japanese all those comments makes me laugh. Japanese in the first place are made from several roots, including black race too. "Japanese" are the formed when Yayoi-Jin from ancient China immigrated and mixed to Jomon-jin that were partially black (Jarawan from Ardaman has same DNA as us). Normally Japanese know that and we define who's Japanese by what type of identity and upbringing of that person have. For Naomi we didn't think her as a Japanese since she moved to U.S at very young age and imagined she is very Americanized girl. But after all those interviews people noticed how Japanese her personality is and feel connected with her. Thinking Japanese define Japanese by race is actually the wrong stereotype. People see it from attitude and upbringing.
@lower_than_furries9727

I couldn't agree more. No matter what people say about her. Japanese or not, naomi is clearly Japanese at heart. Though she doesn't speak Japanese much since she grew up speaking English but her attitude and upbringing is clearly Japanese. She has stated many times that her decision to play for Japan and accepted by the Japanese has made her feel very honored. それが違うの?

It is my understanding that she isn't under the spell of inclusion she knows she is Haitian ie black and doesn't run from it if that it is true I will be a fan. One thing I hate is when a person who is clearly of African heritage seeks to erase or run from that fact I know society collectively frowns on blackskin and I love to support people who love there black skin.

I think her family is seeing a big opportunity for business. I think they are seeing opening tennis school in Japan. That may explains why she kept her mother's family name, as well as her Japanese citizenship. There's an enthusiastic fan base, there's money to make. Along the way, they found that there's no high level training system in Japan, caused her to move to US in early age. Why not create a pro level tennis training school like the ones available in US? There's a lucrative monopoly opportunity right there.

Lol not really. Japan has money, not her heart. The family that raised her is Haitian. They may let her decide to ride this wave of controversy because at 22 she can always switch sides. Naomi Osaka is Japanese Haitian American. She is Biracial. She is a "hafu" in Japan, half Japanese. She is the 2018 US Women's Open Champion. There will be many more Grand Slam CHAMPIONSHIPS coming her way. Nike should sign her for a multi year contract. Adidas probably will. Maybe some Japanese companies, whether she's Full Japanese or not. The color of money is GREEN, not White, Black, Yellow, or Red.

Everyone IN Japan is HAFU. Ask the knowledgeable Japanese about this topic they agree. The original/indigenous Japanese are the Ainu. So she is closer to full Japanese than the ones shown in the cities...the ones mixed with anglo saxons...

Irrespective of all the racial analysis in the comments below - she's a deserved winner and seems very humble and a likeable person. She's also a good role model. The same can't be said for Serena Williams anymore.

The only reason that people keep referring her to JAPANESE first then BLACK or AFRICAN AMERCIAN is because Japan offered more money to sponsor her but that does not mean anything as she becomes a rising star she will redefine what BLACK even means, excited for her SUCCESS.

What she has accomplished is a step in Changing what the people think of diversity in Japan. And of course, let's not forget that, first of all, this strong young woman is a person like all of us

Japan is not a country of immigrants. It's going to take a LONG time for Japanese people to recognize any non-Asian as Japanese. We are talking about hundreds if not thousands of years. Even in countries like the USA and Canada, some people will NEVER see you as American or Canadian unless you are Caucasian. I'm Asian and grew up in America. I served in the U.S. Army for four years. Yet my sergeant straight out told me "You don't look American." I would imagine that it's even worse in a country like Japan.

We have been watching Naomi as a Japanese tennis player. We love her. And I feel sad you think Japanese as a discriminatory citizen. But I think that is a misunderstanding. We just have a excessive complex in English conversation. I'm scared of writing in English like this.
