I just came from Canada for the weekend and yes please fill up your tanks in the US before crossing the border. They’re running on kmh and not Mph, so if you see 70, 80 or 100 kmh is equivalent to 45, 50 and 60 Mph
Coming from VA, you would drive through Niagara before Toronto. Niagara is immediately after crossing the border. If you do go to downtown Toronto , don’t take the 407. While staying downtown Toronto is convenient so be prepared for Hotel prices to be high. If you want to save money I would suggest staying a little further out on the subway line. 40 years ago when i went into canada from Washington state, it was like "have a good time", "enjoy Canada!" But coming back into the US, it was the third degree!, "where have you been, where did you go, what did you do" had me pull over, tore my car apart, treated me like crap, like a felon.
That sure would discourage you from wanting to cross again. They do ask a lot of questions, but I guess each border, and agent can be different. I hope you get a chance to visit again with a different experience. Thanks for watching.
