I think it shows a lack of personal responsibility. Let’s call this what it is. It is digital street begging. It is not everyone’s responsibility to pay off his debt. It’s his responsibility. It’s a lazy way to try to get debt free that does not require him to pay the proper penitence, and it’s that painful process that truly teaches the lesson.

I get those who say "it's lack of responsibility." It's rough on these young people nowadays, and if someone has money to spare to help another get started. GoFundMe should really be reserved for situations like a cancer diagnosis or a horrible injury that prevents you from working. You just randomly soliciting money for other people to take responsibility for your personal problems is extremely immature and entitled. Id cease a friendship over this. It's one thing to request money instead of gifts for a wedding registry. I can see that working out fine as long as you do tactfully and explain the need. Part of getting yourself out of debt is building the character through doing it. If other people come along and do it for you you don't build character.

Unfortunately, I feel like it makes them look bad. I have friends who don’t work but raise money for missions- assuming they are very busy doing ministry, that I can understand, but when it’s for school or debt or other stuff- especially if you’re fully capable of working- I just can’t get myself to donate.

It depends on the couple. If it is a well-off couple of yuppies, it's shamelessly entitled. However, if it is a couple on a low income who want to start a family debt free, why not? Where are all these people told to tithe 10% of their income going to stuff their money? Give it all to the church and hope that it will eventually reach some deserving people once the church roof repairs are paid for? Or give it to real people and solve real-life problems? A friend of ours told us about a church community that decided to use all Sunday donations to lift one family after another out of debt until the whole community is DEBT FREE. Isn't that worthwhile? And if so then can we not have a GLOBAL community where we do the same regardless of which church (if any) people attend?

That's true. It depends. I am 60 and working part time with cancer and I get pretty offended when able bodied people ask me for money.

Nothing wrong with it if you just say hey we want to pay off debt and would you like to help us. Now, if you lie and tell a bs story of why, then no not helping. Don’t beg like you’re on a street corner. Just ask.

Why are you guys not ok with this, but you’re just fine with letting cc’s charge off for money they used? They shouldn’t have to pay THAT money back?
