Cool video, and very interesting to see the build-it-yourself option. I personally have found the "official" Retro Games Ltd controllers to be OK, but being able to use a classic DB9 joystick is appealing for that retro experience - especially if you can keep the latency down.
@TeamPandory
@TeamPandory 2 года назад
The solution we presented is ... Pretty much zero latency :-) It's also a fun little project. Won't take you an hour, and you could make two for 20$

Quite nice, esp. the Pi Pico version. There is also an A600 keyboard to USB adapter on github, based on Pi Pico. And a PCB for an A600 mechanical keyboard... Add Drawbridge to add a DiskDrive, print a modified A600 case to build the Pi 400, the mechanical keyboard, the diskdrive and maybe a slot-in CD/DVD-drive inside and you get something much more powerfull than an A500 mini (but I think you can use the GPIOs for adding a joystick to the Pi400). Bigger than the A500 mini, but much smaller than a real A500. Optimal compromise. Also by simply swapping the micro SD you could use it as "Office PC" with Raspian (so no dust collector most of the time). I already made the keyboard (resin printed keycaps, not labeled yet, as my printer with dysub ink is out of order). There is also an stl for the A600 case available to print it, but my Anycubic Chiron is also out of order at the moment. Anyway, my first Amiga was the A2000 and I fit it into an tower case under my desk. I still have the original A2000 keyboard (Braunschweig Edition = Cherry Keyboard with doubleshot keycaps - easy to retrobright) and you could easy put it to USB with an Arduino mini. So most easy to get retro feeling for me is just using the original keyboard from the A2000, an USB tank mouse (you can get the mouse of the A500 mini seperatly) and two of the pico USB joystick adapters. But still, making an A600 cased Pimiga 400 with Disk- and CD/DVD-drive would be the ultimate emulator in my opinion; much better than TheA500mini. With USB to seriell and USB to paralell adapters you might also add some old hardware (the old Amiga to Fishertechnik interface wouldn't work sadly I read, but maybe an old NEC Pinwriter back from the days). For using the A600 keyboard in Raspbian I plan to reprogram the one key which is pressed unintentional 98% of the time as a "FN" key: capslock. So you could get F11, F12 etc. by pressing capslock and F1/F2 etc. ( and for the 2% you realy want capslock simply press Capslock+shift)

Yeah, there are a lot of better options than the a500mini, and we mentioned this in the review. But it has sold pretty well, and many are not comfortable in making 3d models or boards to change amiga keyboards to work with it. I made a 500+ keyboard work with a pi using an Arduino Leonardo board in the past. It's pretty cool, but I'd rather have it be a real Amiga. There's always something missing when it comes to emulation, just knowing that it's not the real thing. (Enter coca cola ad)

@@TeamPandory I definitly also prefer the originals - with some tinkering/upgrading. At the moment my main project is to rework a CDTV with CD-Drive beyond repair. So I try to add an notebook slot-in drive, an IDE-controller and a pistorm. Is a lot harder as it sounds. It has to be an IDE-drive (as I need to have analog-out), but notebook drives have Master/Slave/CS set in firmware - mostly slave. Only way I got it to work (testing on a Budda-Flash in my A2000) was using 50->40 IDE-Adapter with CS torn to GND, an SATA-Host to IDE-Konverter (only one out of 3 tested converters worked) and an IDE-Host to SATA Adapter on the Buddha. But using an IDE68k in the CDTV under a Pistorm (if it is not an original CDTV it should at least be powerfull) does not work (I removed the CD-Controller to avoid autoboot-conflict). Pistorm deactivates mapping of the scsi.device adresses if it does not find a hd... Next thing to try is A500IDE. A long way to go... At least I found my Pi Zero 2, so I can build a flat pistorm (glueing Pistorm and Pi Z 2 side by side with epoxy and using 40 short cables to connet them), so if A500IDE works I still can mount both on top of each other and still close the CDTV. Sadly Pistorm seems not to support USB CD-drives (USB-flash is supported as HD if you set the mounting parth, but setting path to CD drive seams not work :-( ) But beside having some real nice Amiga stuff I would realy like a Pimiga in A600 design with floppy and CD-drive. I always used my Amigas more for work than gaming back in the days - so I see a fast Pimiga more as a "next step" to try out, what would have been possible if Commodore has not gone out of business. Trying to get an old 24 needle Pinwriter back to work was not a joke by the way - the quality with Turboprint was quite nice (the tinitus was not so nice of course). I used it a lot to print matrices for spirit carbon printing - I even have such a machine somewhere. Printing something in this techniqe would definitly retro to the extreme, even if using emulated Amiga ;-)

@@oleurgast730 pistorm does really drive an amiga home. It's insane to see it pushes the Amiga so far, but I'm hoping more in regards to game compatibility. A500+ pistorm, a600 w furia, and an a1200 with Apollo 030 over here ;-)

This looks great. I've bought the pico and followed your instructions. However, after I've installed the new firmware I can't get the Settings screen up. I press the black button, insert the usb cable the point my browser to the IP address but it won't load the settings page, it times out. I'm using a Mac, does that make a difference? Would this only work on a Windows or Linux machine?

@@juzziepope You may be able to create an adapter by using female and male db9 connectors, but as for 15 pin ANALOGUE joysticks- I don't think the BBC can handle that, can it? The DB9 joysticks usually stuck to digital inputs.

the cheaper why is probably just to open that original controller from A500 mini and drille a hole for cables on the side and just cut off cable ( or only put the needles in DB9 socket) from old amiga /atari joystick and solder cables to points on A500mini controller's "motherboard" (near microstick/ or condictive rubbers I do not know what is inside). it will be not beautifull and robust.

Hello. Thanks for the video! I'm wondering if you can tell me the name/and or model # for the last 2 sticks you use toward the end with the Pi Pico mod. I know I used a good competition pro back in the day, but don't have it anymore, and want to see my options for a good quality original stick. I'm mainly interested in the Amiga. I might do the Pi Pico mod. Thanks again! By the way, I've been through 2 of the sticks that come with the mini Amiga and they both broke.

Little off topic- but I can't seem to find the right cores for your retroarch mod on the A500 mini. I've tried all the linux/android/mini console versions of armv7/8 and even x64/86 of the .so files - but they always end up "failed to install core" on the A500 mini..? If you could post a link to the compatible cores I would be very grateful - or otherwise describe a more detailed tip on how to maybe install them without going through the retroarch 'core installer' if that is the problem... Your Mod Rocks btw...!! 🤎🤘😀
@TeamPandory

You'll be needing to add maybe the SNES mini cores, but not everything is fully compatible... is there anything in particular you're after? In the next version we'll be adding a good few.
@Whirre

Just being a lil bit sad that the A500 is a restricted system missing an open firmware.. And, yes, a release v2.0 for the a500 with All retroarch cores would be soo nice - but it also would be really nice to boot up 'Dragons Lair' and 'Space Ace' from Daphne (maybe via Dosbox) on this hardware..! The Commodore team tried their best to make it back in the day - with a shitload of floppies - but they never succeeded... ;) Maybe there is a way to patch a *Batocera* launcher in the boot of the a500 startup..? Damn I suck at coding.. I Love You Guys!! :) Keep Retro Alive!
