Being able to use and apply "Ghost Notes" within your bass lines and grooves is HUGE...
James Jamerson used them, Jaco used them, Rocco uses them, I'm sure you get the idea...
The gag is, they can be a total pain to get into your playing... and once you start using them, there are so many common mistakes you can make that will totally destroy the feel of any groove.
In this lesson I'm going to show you 4 essential exercises for playing super funky ghost notes on the bass...
You ready? Let's get the funk on!
As always, see you in the shed...
Scott :)

Good to see someone else who is loving those black nylon tapes. I wanted them on my Pentabuzz to be more of an acoustic tone envelope, but the great bonus is that they get SO FUNKY when you dig into them. It's the secret double bonus.

I've been a guitarist for 29 years and trying to also be a bassist for more than one year and Scott, my man, your videos not only help me improve my level and my propositions, but also and above all they open my mind to what music can be in a different way. Thank you very much.

I need somebody to do this for all of Scott's videos. I barely watch his content (even though it's pretty valuable) just because 75% of the video is basically pointless. He always spends the first quarter or so talking about his giveaways and all his side projects. I don't know how the complaints of lack of conciseness haven't gotten to him yet.

If you become a member the courses and seminars are very concise. There's so much excellent material to learn. This is a free lesson and Scott needs to make a living hence some of the video is for promotional purposes, I guess. I joined Scott's Bass Lessons over 3 years ago and haven't regretted it for a minute. It's worth every penny!

Holygiant you are both wrong, there's *more* add revenue on 10min+ videos, either way that's not the reason for Scott's videos been like that... He has a website where you pay for the lessons so he makes the videos like this for you to want to pay for the lessons to remove what you don't want to watch

Mp Regencia I've only been playing for a few months, but it is awesome and fun and bass players are always in demand. You can get a good starter bass for less than a hundred bucks on the internet. That's what I did and after I was sure I wanted to keep it up I bought an Ibanez. The difference between the cheap one and the better one is extremely noticeable. I guess you could also rent a good one for a couple of months till you're sure you want to continue. Good luck!

Hey Scot, I just started bass playing and am building up my technique. Muting the low strings with my right thumb is working so far, but I have problems with the harmonics of the string i play when I release the note. Usually between releasing the fret with the left hand and touching the string with a finger of the right hand. Is there a special technique or a trick to avoid this? Im asking here, because the problem occurs heavy in this exercises.

Mind you, on another level, I was showing a student this idea recently, and I found it really hard to concentrate on actually DEMONSTRATING ghost note application. It's kinda' like singing out of tune if you CAN sing IN tune. I found that when I CONCENTRATED on doing it, the mere fact that I was 'thinking' it somehow took away some of the funkiness. If that makes sense? Also, you mention, Gary Willis, but on a less virtuostic level, someone like Ethan Farmer is good a this.

quick question, i understand thumb rests and their uses but i don't understand the placement of them on p basses like yours where is below the strings
@ronlawrence5635
@ronlawrence5635 6 лет назад
Then you understand that a thumb rest is above the strings so you can rest your thumb on it. When it is below the strings, it is called a tug bar. You place your fingers on it when you play with your thumb. When Leo Fender created the original P bass, it was with a tug bar. The thumb rest came later.

@jmattbassplaya90

Michele Puddu Touching the string at multiple points helps. Also allowing your fretting fingers to envelop the string more than you would when playing a harmonic helps. But mostly, it's just practice and knowing how to control the instrument. Good luck!
