This week, ReDriven takes a look at the Tesla Model S. Tesla sold bucket loads of them when they were new, but as they start appearing on the used-car market, should Tesla fans be rushing out to grab one for thousands of dollars cheaper than new, or are there a few things to consider?

At ReDriven, we’ll be taking you through the pros and cons of a huge range of used cars to see how well they’re going now that they’re a few years old, have thousands of kilometres on the clock, and are coming toward the end of their warranty, or maybe don’t have one at all.
Plus, thanks to our resident mechanic, Jim, you’ll find out what commonly goes wrong with them and what might need to be fixed.
Most importantly, we want to make ReDriven a voice for the most in-the-know used car experts there are...you guys.. See, you’re the ones that actually buy, live with, love and sometimes unfortunately hate the cars we’ll be reviewing.
So we want to hear your thoughts. Hit us up in the comments, or on Instagram and Facebook.
We’d love nothing more than for you to give us as much feedback as possible, so we can make this channel the best it can be.

After driving a whole bunch of these from various years I'd recommend looking for a 2018 or up. Pre-2018 models had some issues with the drive axle and more importantly the gen-3 seats found in late 2017 onwards are much comfier and almost don't wear at all. You can spot them easily since they have adjustable headrests and a less "spacey" design in the back seat. The gen-2 seats are decent but absolutely avoid the first gen seats from 2013-2014, those are downright horrible. Also make sure to get dual motor (4WD). RWD versions are still sports car fast, but only 4WD ones are "Tesla fast". And no, the novelty of the dual motor Tesla acceleration never does wear off :)

I'm just curious, what do you do for work to just go through multiple 120k (only just now they are down to 105k) cars? I really want a Tesla S Plaid and I CAN (barely) afford one but it would be a stupid purchase financially, obviously there are "wiser (but less fun) things to do with the money. Right now the I want to go 0-60 in 2.3 seconds part of my brain is fighting the Don't be a fool its too expensive part of my brain.

If you want free supercharger you have to go for max 06/2016 models. I own 2 of them, with a supercharger 5km from home I've not paid a single charge for 5 years on both cars... thanks to Tesla I've saved up to 5000€ of electriciy every year. One car is 450.000km (2013 S85) the other is 250.000km (2016 facelift S90D). I spent about 1000-1500€/year on repair on average. Best cars I've ever owned.

Is the Tesla Model S something I would consider? hmm no Why Well compared to our Prius Gen 3 ITech fit finish and reliability is terrible. The 2009 Prius has travelled 280000k. The only things we have replaced since new was 1 inverter cost 5k and a 12v start battery. The main battery and everything else apart from service items is original. And it is regularly driven on rough dirt roads. It has even been driven in the desert on sand! Range of the S for me is terrible. I will regularly drive long distance eg Melb to Sydney Canberra Snowies Gippsland. My friend in his S. Overnight stay in Albury ... expensive fuel It is neither a sports car or a comfortable saloon. A real driver's car is fun and rewarding to drive. eg an XR6 Turbo or a mini or an Alpha. A good saloon is comfortable for older people to climb in and get out. Teslas are fail. If you measure a vehicle's effectiveness by the level of happiness in its owner groups and the verdict is very very clear. It is an SUV . SUV owners have the biggest grins on the planet. and happiness in my book matters. So whether you drive a Ute a Patrol a Cruiser or Colorado... enjoy the drive And yes the Prius is infuriatingly well made and my wife loves it. And I begrudgingly admire it. But give me a Mustang any day if you love driving.

I will say I don't know that the other luxury brands are better on the headlights. I just sold my 2013 M5 a couple of months ago. The left front headlight fixture was getting condensation in it and started to fail (throwing codes...etcetera). Looking around, had I had the replacement done by BMW with parts and labor I was looking at around $3000 US dollars maybe more. This was the xenon with active and auto leveling. I have a friend that is into Audi and he seemed to indicate things might be similar with them. I don't know if the headlight thing is common for the Model S but I've heard from at least one person it is common with the same one across that generation 5 series that my M5 was. I will have to do my research on the Model S and that issue.

Just had the privilege of driving a near new model 3 Performance (Aug 2022), things of note. 1) very quick to accelerate. 2) very quick for the novelty to wear off. Certainly wasn't expecting the quickness of either, like who knew? Is it worth over $100,000 Australian dollars? For some yes, for me? Like I said, the speed at which the novelty wore off was unexpected. But try one for yourself, having your head smacked against the headrest when pressing the pedal is unlike anything that is propelled by expanding gas. Your passengers will quickly learn to despise it.

Ima keep it 100% my Tesla repairs shit I should start my own Channel 2015 P85D purchased in November 2020 55k miles on it currently 136,000k Repairs in 2021 gps antenna $2000 they had to replace back glass to get to it. $300 door handle . $300 whatever that thingy is called under front of car it’s all plastic . Internet upgrade 3g-LTE I think that was $394 replace the little battery in front $400 may have been less 2022 repairs( mileage at time 125k miles) $6,000 rear suspension replacement, some coolant switch , head light hid bulbs , tpms & 4 tires . I’m sure I’m missing a part but I do drive a lot . I get free supercharging so 50/50 between super charging and charging at home . I definitely don’t like the repairs I had to do but I do enjoy the car. Like what else am I gonna drive at this point 🤨. This car stuck with me now . I don’t really have a big concern about battery but I’ve definitely experienced some degradation. I see some company out there retrofitted a Tesla model s with a battery that does 700 miles on one charge . Hey if battery goes I’d love to put that in my car to keep it until that battery dies . (Quick vent) I’m tired of buying cars this will probably be my last buy , maybe get a second hand car like a pick up truck so I can haul shit to my rentals when I’m fixing stuff but other than that I’m done car industry I’m good with my car. Hey tesla I don’t care about ur new upgrades it’s not enough to make me buy an updated model that doesn’t have free supercharging . Now make the tesla fly above traffic then you’ll catch my attention but for now meh 😒

Wow… I’d heard of the Tesla manufacturing standards (panel gaps, bad paint, etc) - & this video is the first time I’ve seen a visual representation & it’s shocking. The seat squeak and bad leather would annoy me too. For all the good stuff Tesla offers, there ain’t no way I’d be keen on that kind of poor build quality.

What the hell has happened to that interior. I have a 2016 Model S with 125,000 KM on it and the interior looks fine. I think the previous owner of the one in this video has been putting some weird oily treatments on that. The lights problem is just unjustifiable though, nearly all of them fail (not the main light but the decorative daylight running “eyebrow”). Tesla should really give and extended warranty on this and change the design.
@ReDriven
@ReDriven 3 года назад
The owner of this one still owns it and uses it daily. His daughter is incredibly well behaved and we doubt would abuse the interior and from what I understand, he doesn't put any treatments on the leather. Actually Tesla gave it a full detail a couple of weeks before we shot this. I think that's one of the issues, there are some huge inconsistencies when it comes to build quality.

My 2013 headlights have no issues at 157k miles and interior leather is holding up fine too. I would have bought a used headlight instead of new. Now the actual xenon light has been replaced at a cost of 80 U.S. dollars in one of the headlights.

Until now I have only had BMWs and Jaguars, but I am ready to go electric. Tesla seems to be the go-to brand right now and I am really torn. I have never bought a used car before, but it seems with electric cars it makes more sense as there are hardly any moving parts. For the same price of a basic Model 3 you can get a fully spec'd used Model-S. Hmm...not sure.
@ReDriven
@ReDriven 3 года назад
It's such a tough decision isn't it. I should mention (at risk of making your already difficult decision even more challenging), since we shot this, the owner has had further issues with his S. Tesla have finally come to the party and helped him with costs of repair but it has been stressful. How about trying a transition vehicle first like a Hybrid of some sort? Personally, I'd recommend a Lexus Hybrid of any variant. That way you're dipping your toe in the electric pool (sounds a bit dangerous when I put it that way) without making the full EV commitment, you'll get an excellent vehicle being a Lexus and you'll avoid any catastrophic depreciation being a Lexus too. Just an idea but thank you for watching and commenting. Hope this and the video help.

@@ReDriven Thank you for your honest reply. I have done some more thinking and I think a new Model 3 makes more sense. The running cost of a Model -S (Insurance, spare parts, tyre costs,..) is quite a bit higher, plus with a new car you get the latest technology and a warranty. Personally, I am not convinced by hybrids. My dad has one (BMW) and to me it seems like the worst of both worlds. You still have all the maintenance costs and wear and tear of a petrol engine plus the maintenance of an electric car. When driving on the electric motor you carry a petrol engine around with you and when driving on the petrol engine you carry a battery pack around. I am not convinced by that and would rather go all electric. I did a testdrive with the Jaguar i-Pace and that was an amazing car, but way to expensive for me. I live in Mallorca and being on a small island is perfect for an electric car as you can never go much further than 80km before you end up in the sea. Everything is close and there is sun all year round which would be perfect for solar panels. We will have to wait and see., but thanks for your reply :-)

@@fsclips Thanks for the reply to the reply mate. The Model 3 sounds perfect for you and living on such a beautiful (and fun sized island) the range won't be a drama at all. Unfortunately, range anxiety is a very real concern here in Australia as the distances are huge and the space between charging points can often mean having to drive in the opposite direction to get charge before heading back the way you need to travel. Totally agree on the i-Pace, what a great car but they want crazy money for it. Again, thanks for watching and commenting, have a wonderful weekend.

@@ReDriven Yeah, we are still in early days for the used EV market. With more inventory on the used market, prices will come down to reflect the risk. Then DIY folks can start to make the repairs with good used parts, and someone will publish a How To book on Tesla's. But we are not there yet ...

@@ReDriven I am a stalwart and constant harpy about EV conversions. WAY to many old cool cars and trucks (and Utes) to let them all die. Here in the USA legacy auto makers are facing a cliff. Once EV adoption really takes off, they are saddled with a dealer network that is unhappy and dying because they make all their $$ on service and financing. I have been saying for sometime now that dealers need to be able to get factory designed EV Kits to install in good existing chassis. It's a market that Tesla will never enter, it helps the gear heads, and the planet (recycling on the fly). Just like crate motors today, we need those EV kits. 90% of the public would either pay to have the conversion done, or buy a new EV. Either way, good for the dealers. And it keeps all the auto techs employed. We don't need to trash the industry, we just need to convert our power mode ...

I would agree with most of this video, as a 2nd hand model s owner. I compare the model s to owning a racehorse…. But I’ve owned other marques in my time and the build quality of eg a 4 year old Audi or VW is just as disappointing. They are just better at hiding it! Overall I wouldn’t swap my model s for any other car. Including a 3!

I'm not really a electric car fan as most Aussies aren't. But, if I lived in the city and had to commute to work, this is the go. I'm sure, well lets hope so the newer models have better build quality and you would think more after market parts will come available over time. I have a large solar system on my roof, so wouldn't cost a lot to recharge and with very little servicing to do and the big one NONE OF THIS EXPENSIVE FUEL TO BUY, would save a fortune. This is the future of motoring if we like it or not, towing my caravan around Australia could be a problem though.

@@Michael-jo9jb agree with that, but many workplaces now allow people to plug in their cars, but the average EV now can travel 300 to 400k's on a single charge, so this would cover most weekly travel to work and recharge on the weekends. I used to laugh at the idea of an EV, but with these rip off fuel companies, an EV for general run around car for work and general suburban driving, looking good now I think.

Tesla tech looks great. But those panel gaps and other build quality faults and issues seem unforgivable in this day and age. $3500 AU dollars for a headlight 🤣🤣😂, I feel a lot of empathy for the owner, what the fuck are they made of unobtanium?? The Tesla batteries are meant to be the best and most reliable due to fact they are cooled extending the battery life way beyond that of a Nissan Leaf or other electric cars that do not have battery cooling systems.
