Taking a small amount off is like honing. That's how I was taught. You would never see sparks fly like that. It is a much lighter application. Makes your chains last a lot longer 🤷♂️ But I'm just a dumb tree guy. I could be wrong
I clean my chains in hot water and dish soap, before grinding and I also load up the grinding wheel with candle wax, I have not needed to dress my wheel in a very long time.
@r2d23678 The wax prevents the glazing over of the wheel, it also starts to melt a bit if the chain gets hot helping to keep things cool so you dont burn the cutter.
Thank you I just retired starting an new endeavor. Started slabbing thoroughly enjoying it. Doing a lot of cramming for knowledge . Appreciate what you are doing I will be subscribing just found you tonight . I do appreciate good quality tools. I’m looking to purchase a good bench grinder. Looking at square grind sharpening. On cross cut makes a big difference ripping I would like to think it will help . Any words of wisdom would be much appreciated. Thank you
Robert Cerda thanks. I’ve had my learning curve on this as well. At some point I want to upgrade to a CBN wheel, I’ve heard they’re far superior to a stone...but also considerably more expensive.

I have the same blue grinder, sold at Princess Auto. Before that I had one made by Timber Tuff which was the exact same thing, I used that one for many years but I dropped it and it broke the frame.
@@timberray9572 yeah well my sharpener came with discs of different thickness but I've only had one on there for the past 5 years to do all size chains. My uncle also says it doesn't matter. Anyway, I got something helpful out of this video thanks very much. My chains were coming off the sharpener not cutting straight and of questionable sharpness. I rubbed a grinding stone against both sides of the spinning disc and the chains are back to cutting well again. I'm in gratitude to Big Ass Slabs!!!
I found out when I used a chain after using a grinder that it was cutting the teeth differently from the left side to the right side. It was cutting much more aggressively on one side an pulling the bar like dull teeth. I finally figured out that the teeth on 1 side were shorter due to the pivot on the grinder. I sure was pissed!! Especially since it was the big 60" chain😫
I encounter that as well, the pivot throws things off. Thankfully when I was still using a little hand grinder I got in the habit of using a micrometer, so I ALWAYS check the cutter length as I'm going around.
That is nothing mi amigo, a learning curve is needed on this grinders, once you gey used to do do it right you are going to feel great when you do cuts with a nice sharpen chain. I prefer this type of mechanical problems that problems with women, a lot easier to solve them. Saludos mi amigo. from Costa Rica
Christopher Kapp yep, my sharpener has three angle settings. The angle of the grinding stone, the angle of the cutter edge and then a bevel angle into the cutter.
Bolens69 and Unfortion seem to be right. I checked the books and on line instructions for the 10 degree "down" angle. They all say for cutters on the right side (as seen from the saw motor end) the knob for the angle and down angle should be pushed away from you. I try to remember "right away". For the left cutters you pull the 10 degree down angle knob towards you.
Yes I see what you mean, but which is the 'motor end'..? Are we looking at the pulling side of the chain, or the top side pushing part of the chain, when it is in the vice...? If we go back to the file sharpening angles, the 10 degrees is always cutting upwards from the wooden handle end of the file...… So it looks as if he did it wrong... He should have pushed the point of the cutter away from the vice.
