Using a GTX 1080Ti With a 13 Year Old IBM Laptop: The Ultimate GPU Bottleneck

While i'm waiting for parts to come in for the video I was actually planning on publishing this weekend, I thought we would have some fun with this GTX1080Ti I have just lying around. Last year we paired the Thinkpad Advanced Dock 250310U with a GTX1060. Today we are going to take things up a notch by tossing in a Nvidia GTX1080ti. Lets see if the 1080ti makes any difference or if the docking station's PCIe x1 and T60's specs prove to be too big of a bottleneck for this beast of a video card.

use a T420 or 430 with a express card to pci-e adapter.Basically the same.I've made my own adapter and can confirm that i does work

I have the 1030 too, gddr5 version, and I use it in this exact same setup in a 2503 docking station with a T60 as my main computer. The main reason for this setup for me was the fact that some of the software I use need opengl support, and the Ati cards in the T60 are just crap at that (program didn't even start up with it).

Then again the 300 dollar gap would buy you a solid ryzen build that would give you a way better experience with the 1060 than the laptop with the 1080 ti. Yeah, I know it's just for fun.

i love this video i use the T430s and the Radeon RX 480 8gb (with the exp beast dock v8.4) , and as a big fan of your ultimate docking station video ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-y-FTjwL5C2o.html ) and someone who made a few variations of a similar setup (altho only for my personal entertainment, not for youtube), i would LOVE to see you setup sumthing similar where u updated your Docking setup with perhaps a 1060 or indeed you 1080ti! i use the rx 480 with as low as a 400w psu (as its only powering the gpu and nothing else) basically, if ur keen on the idea id *LOVE* to see more docking station content! ps: Your T430 combined with the gtx 1060 wud be a great mix (without too much overheads/ wasted gpu potential) and if u use the expresscard interface, as long as the machine is powered down when you plug in the gpu/expresscard adaptor its essentially plug and play! there are a few tricks with 10 series cards that u might have to work around (hence why i use the AMD card) but essentially it usually just involves plugging in the video cable after powering on the card....

Wat. This is the complete opposite of a GPU bottleneck. Everything but the GPU is limiting the performance.

I don't have $50 because I just bought a $450 GPU... I might use next month's Patreon funds to buy a new one though. Looks like our Sparkle test PSU finally bit the dust.

@@Simmonsumers35 As stated in the video, we didn't buy the 1080ti specifically to use it with the advanced dock. Therefore we had to make due with what we had laying around. Unfortunately I am in no position to have expensive PSU's with dual 8 pin connectors readily available for testing. This isn't LTT, this is a tiny budget tech oriented channel.

@@AAComputersandTechnology I get what you're saying but why even buy the GPU then? What's its purpose if you don't have the proper PSU to run it and why blow all your money on something when you lack the resources to use it in a way that would be worth the investment?

@@Simmonsumers35 The rest of the parts that we need in order to use the 1080ti for the upcoming video are on order still. They are shipping from outside the country so they are not here yet. I don't want to give away too many details because I don't want another channel to steal my content. The "resources" for the planned video are on their way though.
