today we are exploring the possibility of using a heat bulb/overhead heating for a leopard gecko tank - specifically halogen bulbs! I'll also touch briefly on deep heat projectors, but will mainly share my experience in attempting to use a halogen bulb to heat my leopard gecko enclosure.

I have a Zilla mini setup w/UV & Halogen for my Leo in a 30"x12"x18" tall enclosure. I use the tropical UV bulbs because the desert ones give off too much UV for a Leo at 18" away (I use a UV measuring device), and I use a 25w halogen and it gets extremely hot, so you need a thermostat for it. And one thing I'd like to add is that if you have an overhead heat source, putting real slate stone under it is fantastic (use the dark stone), it holds a lot of heat for a long time and can do what a heat mat does, and when the light turns off the stone cools very slowly, just like in nature when the sun goes down and temps normally drop... I don't use a heat mat anymore, but I do have a DHP w/ a dimming thermostat that has night drop working in tandem, And after I installed the DHP, my Leo basks under it like a bearded dragon after she eats... it's sooo cute.

That’s awesome! I recommend upgrading to a 40 gallon (36x18x18”) or larger, though. And do you use a tube UVB bulb, or a compact/coil bulb?
@myownmasterpiece8788
@myownmasterpiece8788 Год назад
@Nighting Gale The UV bulbs are U-shaped and have a plug-in style base, the fixture holds six bulbs total and has a timer, but I'm only using 2 UV and 1 halogen to maintain a gradient. I'm two months into building a 36"x18"x18" enclosure out of wood and glass, with built-in 3D sides and back, with real slate worked in throughout for basking and climbing. My Leo loves to climb, and hang halfway off ledges head first, and she'll jump down and across distances to get from one place to another; I love watching her do it, you can see her sitting and sizing up the jump, and then she'll launch herself and use her tail like a rudder or counterweight, she's fearless and skilled, serious Hollywood stunt-double type stuff. I'll probably be done with painting and detail work in a week or so, and then it's on to making substrate and terrain. Once everything is set up and my Leo is living in it happy I'll start building the base cabinet.

Hello. Thank you for the helpful information and video. My question is what size tank are you using with the 50 watt halogen bulb. I have mine raised also with the brackets and my tank height is 12 inches. Also, how long do you keept your light on. I have the same light fixture setup and I am upgrading from 10 gallon glass to a 20 Long/29 gallon glass tank. The original bulb that came with the 10gallon tank is a daylight white 25 watt mini halogen. For the larger tank I bought 50 watts and the center of the beam is temping at 110 degress. Even tho it is small beam area with a surface that hot I am unsure if this is ok or not. I am using an UTH 8X12 heat mat. What temperature is your mat set at and do you use it 24/7. Please let me know what temps and what height your tank is. Thank you. :)

Great video thank you for sharing your experience. I love your idea of creating a circadian rhythm that is natural with the day halogen and night UTH. I’ve kept my leopards on UTH my whole husbandry experience… I’ve been down the Deep Heat Projector rabbit hole for weeks and the new halogen info from you and others is throwing a curve ball, but I’m glad! I love that we all clearly want the best for our little lizards!
@bearsbeetsbsg8

I swapped a lot of my snakes to par30 halogen flood heat and arcadia uvb and regularly see them basking. I also run a UTH but only at night to mimic the heat released by rocks. I would recommend you run the heat lamp and uth on separate times. The halogen will heat up the surface below it during the day and still give your gecko the opportunity for belly heat. You could try a halogen flood like a par30 or par38 even a par20 because the type you are using only creates a narrow spot light of heat. It's cool you are trying new things with your husbandry! Personally I've been very happy with the outcomes and behaviors that have come out from swapping all my snakes to overhead heat and lighting after keeping them only on UTH for 6 years.

I’ve been keeping them on a heat pad for a couple years as well as giving them calcium supplements, but I think I want to buy them each a DHP. Is it possible to only use a DHP with no additional lighting other than the light that comes into my room?

I have a 20 gallon also with the uth. My tank was not getting warm enough on the cool side so I added a ceramic heat emitter with a fluval dome that has a dimmer control on it. @@CrazyguyRC just letting you know: neither heat mats nor CHEs are a good primary heat source since they only produce infrared C. A halogen bulb is the most natural and beneficial primary heat source, Arcadia’s deep heat projector is the second best option. Do you need a thermostat?
@nightinggale6470
@nightinggale6470 Год назад
Generally, yes, you should have a thermostat to regulate the temperature of your heat source (especially with heat mats). With a halogen bulb (the most natural and beneficial heat source), you would use a dimmer or dimming thermostat. However, dimming the bulb too much will greatly reduce the amount of infrared A it emits (the most beneficial heat wavelength), which defeats the purpose of using a halogen. Therefore you should experiment with wattage to find a bulb you can use to achieve the temps you need without being dimmed. Although it’s still a good idea to have it hooked up to a dimmer or dimming thermostat just in case (for example, a heat wave can cause a temperature spike).
