Patching techniques and ideas that I continue updating - bit.ly/3o1Q3Sg
A couple of weeks ago, I bought the BeatStep Pro from Arturia, as a companion for the Neutron I got. Little did I know how powerful the BeatStep Pro is, and how versatile it is, especially when combined also with VCV Rack. The BeatStep Pro can send MIDI-CC to VCV Rack, controlling all sorts of parameters within VCV Rack, It has 2 melodic sequencers with very nice features like velocity and randomness, and they can be assigned and control multiple voices in VCV Rack, and it also has a very powerful drum sequencer, that has the ability to have different sequence length for the different voices, adding polyrhythmic aspects to a patch, and the drum sequencer can also drive other sequencers, inside VCV Rack.
In this video, I start by showing how to sync the BeatStep Pro with VCV Rack, and then I go section by section and utilize the different features of the BeatStep Pro in VCV Rack.
I have to thank also the members of the official VCV Rack Facebook page, who helped me to figure out some stuff with the BeatStep Pro and how to sync it properly.

Oh yes, there are many things you can do with the bsp and vcv. You can also send the same sequence you send your eurorack to vcv and double the voices, or sample the pitch with a s&h, and even trigger event that will be synced with what your eurorack is doing. The possibilities are endless... I'm glad you enjoy what I do 🙂 thank you!

Excellent! I'm sold! Not sure about my wife but... It seems like a finely balanced combination of complexity and the intuitive. Not being a keyboard person, I've been scratching my head about how to get somewhere near that space without getting a rash -- the old black and whites give me the heebee-jeebees (an unfortunate early childhood experience no doubt.) Very good overview with lots of ideas about getting VCV off the screen a bit and under the fingers. Thank you!

@@OmriCohen-Music Thanks man! I watched your newer video on BSP/VCV MIDI & I was frankly amazed at how well the BSP works with VCV Rack. I followed your instructions step by step in the video & it started to clear up how the BSP is supposed to work. I had these perceptions of what it may or may not be able to do, but after setting it up, I could see how my perception was entirely wrong & it had more features/flexibility than I'd realized. I'll be sure to send you a few questions as I get them. One of my next steps will be to setup all three sequencers to run together against VCV Rack (assuming it's possible).

I went through these steps over the weekend and got all of it working! I think you can utilize all of the BSP features with VCV Rack, which I can't get fully with Bitwig (at least not yet). I also set up the MiniBrute 2S transport MIDI so that when I click play on the BSP, it'll send its sequence/sound into VCV Rack. To make that work you have to make sure the MiniBrute 2S clock is set to MIDI. It's like magic and it has a wonderful sound.

I have only started doing this since I got the Beatstep, so still lots to learn and explore. It will do while we wait for VCV_1 though. is it possible to have the (in this case bass) sound stop playing by applying an adsr volume envelope to it? or does the sound just play all the time? (without using something like flow)
@OmriCohen-Music
@OmriCohen-Music 3 года назад
Well, yes, but you will have to use an inverted envelope so it will be high most of the time, and only when you want it to stop, it will go down. You will need to set the sustain all the way up, and make sure that whatever you use to trigger the envelope, stays high as long as you want the sound not to play. It's a bit complicated, but can be done.

Got everything working 100 percent now, the problem I initially ran into was there are 2 midi options that appear in the drop-down "Arturia BeatStep Pro 0" and "MIDIIN2 (Arturia BeatStep Pro 1)" For some reason, the first option was causing rack to crash immediately so instead of trying to figure out why I just selected the second one and tried to make it work. After a system restart though the first option stopped crashing rack and it all works perfectly now. If anyone knows what the deal is with the 2 different devices popping up in windows 10 I'd love to know! This was an excellent tutorial and covers the integration really well. I was wondering if its possible to use a hardware sequencer, like the BSP, in combination with a hardware drum pc, vcv rack & an external mixer? I have an audio interface with 8 outputs so that I can send everything from vcv to the mixer & mix it with the drum pc. If I would trigger both vcv & the drum pc with the sequencer then there would be an audible latency difference I assume? Is it an option to rout the midi signal meant for the drum pc first to vcv rack, to give it the correct latency and then to the drum pc?

Actually to stop the VCO sounds from "droning", you can just use a Dual VCA to shut off each of your 2 Oscillators, instead of having to use "Flow", assign the Start/Stop outputs in MIDI-CV to Borg Audio's uMix, that go back to Flow's "External Inputs". Quite complicated patching that can be simplified with a Dual VCA that is simply being controlled by the "Gate" output from your MIDI-CV! EDIT: Oh hang on! But if you only wanted that bass to DRONE each time you start BSP, I can see what you wanted to do with this then! :D

Man, it is like the BSP was designed for VCV Rack! Based on these instructions, the BSP seems a lot easier to configure for VCV Rack than it is for my DAWs (Studio One, Bitwig, and Reason), which I've had a lot of pain & frustration dealing with all of them, with Bitwig being the easier of the three. I'm going to be working on these instructions tonight to setup my own BSP with VCV Rack & will report back on the results. I'll soon be upgrading VCV Rack to include the VCV Host and that practically turns VCV Rack into a DAW of its own. Amazing! One question: How do you record the audio from your synth/eurorack hardware & VCV Rack into Reaper if all of the instruments, hard & soft, are playing at the same time? Is Reaper on a separate computer?
@shitmandood
@shitmandood 5 лет назад
I just realized I posted twice. :| I didn't see my original comment for some reason on a different computer. How come some of the modules are missing in my VCV Rack 1.1.3 install? I can't find the cf or 21khz modules. I've installed them, but they're not showing up in the interface which is a bit weird. I didn't see VCV Rack request to update the library after I installed them either. Update: So the cfs modules just showed up. Not sure why it's taking so long to find these updates. I'll check to see if the 21khz modules (Palm Loop, etc) show up in the morning. I need to switch the Control to Midi Channel 10. I've been using the Arturia system where they put Control/Seq1 together on Channel 1 still, but might make sense to separate them since you can get a 4th sequencer on the Control via a bass drone as you're doing here. Interesting. :) Also need to order the 1/8 trs to 1/4 mono trs to get an accurate clock. I can see the same problem as you're seeing on weeble/wobble of the clock bpm (like it's being modulated...lol).

Yes, the BSP is beautiful! And Host is truly a must! About recording VCV, I multitrack record everything live, VCV and hardware, using Reaper's ReaRoute. It's really easy and comfortable. And no, I run Reaper on the same computer. About 21kHz, the modules were still not updated to VCV 1.1.3 so that's why they will not show up. You can see the version number in the plugin manager. I really hope that they will be updated because the oscillators are really nice sounding.
@shitmandood
@shitmandood 5 лет назад
@@OmriCohen-Music Yes me too. I read on Github that the designer said he would support anyone to bring the 21kHz modules up to version 1.0 & someone made a new code tree for it to try & compile it, but I guess it's not ready yet. I'll be picking up the Host this evening or so and will continue getting the BSP setup. I didn't think to separate Midi Control to its own Midi Channel, but that seems better to have it that way. And I'm ordering a TRS cable to get the clock accuracy. Also, I've been wondering about picking up the Arturia Minilab Mk2 to get an additional 16 encoders for VCV Rack controls, until Midilar is ready. :-) Reaper always seems to have some of the best features that I haven't seen or heard of in other DAWs. I'll have to see if I can find something comparable for the ones I have or use Reaper.
@OmriCohen-Music
@OmriCohen-Music 5 лет назад
We can only hope that 21kHz will be available soon... I have 4 different Midi channels set on the BSP: 1 and 2 are for the melodic sequencers, 3 is for the drum sequencer, and 10 is for the control mode for using the knobs and such. There's a chance that everything would work much better if you will use only Midi, without syncing with the actual clock because there may be a difference in timing between the 2, which can be an issue. But you have to check it out and see how it work with your setup.

Ok, Paul. As I mentioned in the video, I don't have another output on my interface, so I've used now the headphone output, and I had to crank up the level quite a lot, so first of all, make sure that the level is high enough. Then, depends on your ppqn settings in the midi control center, you will have to multiply the clock coming out of VCV. I have mine set on 24ppqn, so before sending out the clock, I multiplied it by 24. Then I set the BeatStep Pro to sync from a clock, hit the play button, and it worked like a charm :) Let me know if this works for you! Cheers.

E.g., I'm trying to clock a Wogglebug (or an 0-Coast or 0-CTRL) via the Clock Out on my BSP (set to "1step") but the response on the Wogglebug seems some multiple faster -- I'd say 4X. Hey, that's a great workaround! Well done :) That's actually how I did it in the first patch I made with it. You can also use the gate output of the beatstep by the way, just like with the clock output of the beatstep pro, but then you will lose this output, and the gates would always be 16th notes I guess. Though I do have an audio interface (Scarlett 2i4), since I travel often, I'd like to not carry the Scarlett. I am assuming there is no possible way to synch to VCV Rack via USB. So, for example, any adapters that could serve the function of connecting the Clock output of the BSP to a MacBook Pro (or pc) via a USB-B/C connection (or even the Audio input of the Mac)? Hi! Well, you can try using the mic input on your laptop. The thing is, it should not go to the main outs because otherwise you will always hear the clock and that's no good. What you can also try is using the same BPM in VCV, and use the Start function on the Midi module to reset the clock whenever you start playing the KSP so they will start together and will, hopefully, stay in sync. I'm not so sure which adapter you're referring to on my Beatstep though, which one is it?
