Really long video just to say "I ran an extension cord to my shed"

I've always wanted the knowledge of how to run an extension cable to my shed, i don't think i could have survived much longer without this wisdom.

This is perfect! I've been trying to think of a way to power my shed to be a part-time workshop and this is ideal! Keep up the good work! Small channels unite!!! 😉

For the longest I wanted power ran to my 10x20 and I knew since I would buy a house later on I wouldn't want to dig and wire it up so this video was the perfect idea thanks for that info 👌

I did exact same thing, but I took the time to drill through e studs. I also used a reverse receptacle so I can just plug in a cord from outside, powers the whole shed. Just like you.

Thanks for this. I used to live in a camper hooked to a residence sort of like this and was wondering if I could do something similar for my shed in the backyard. I just really want a hangout spot and need a lamp and a fan, so this is perfect. Hiring an electrician seems like overkill for my project. Thanks so much!

I had a similar setup, for about a year, until I could bury the power cable. It was mostly for the lights in the work shed, and outlets for a radio. I wish the guys complaining about the electrical code violations would specify them so other viewers who don’t know them, could learn. I think it’s good to use 20-Amp wire in case you want to bury the power and put it on a dedicated 20-amp circuit in the future.

Power for this shed should be on a separate dedicated circuit with ground fault protection.

Im living in a shed right now and have 6 outlets and 1 light all wired up. Currently my incoming power is extension cords and 6 ways. Would this be sufficient to run the whole shed? And is it safe? (I plan on insatalling a sub panel and burying some wire in the future)

Are you leaving the extension cord powering the shed plugged in at all times or do you remove it and put it back into the house when not in use?

Did you purchase duplex outlet and switch at big box store or local hardware?

Is there any special way that you had to do it I tried plugging up my shed to one of the kitchen outlets and our breaker kept on flipping off and I do not understand why it will not run power please help me

exactly what i did. will be temporary though as i don't want an extension cord running between my house and shed 24/7/365. i will install solar, and use mostly battery tools (even my table saw is cordless).

Would this setup run a small window unit?

Would this work if I had more than one outlet in the shed? I want to have exactly what you have, but also another outlet on the outside of the shed for another light for my bbq equipment and some rope lights.

Why not using a normal outdoor fuse box inside the shed than to a power outlets, some outdoor outlets inside the shed and you are safer and better some plastic or metal ducting. 🤔

can you run multiple devices at the same time as running light all off the same power source? I would think it would trip the breaker back in the house?? How does this not over load the system? is it the gauge of wire being used?? Would love to do the same with mine, but fear the tripping constantly back in the home....

After seeing the wiring job. This should be a what not to do to power a shed. I spotted at least three violations before you even got to the extension cord. Don’t screw around with electricity, it’s very unforgiving when it’s done wrong.

I don’t get the purpose of this video… Everyone who hasn’t dug a hole and ran wire underground yet, is ALREADY using extension cords from the main house. 🤷🏻‍♂️

How NOT to wire your shed. There are multiple code and safety violations here. This is a hack job, and anyone following this example is putting themselves (and others) in danger.

Your wire splice is not a legal splice with just tape around wires like that. You should have run that pigtail into a junction box and at least wire nut each wire separately and then tape up each individual wire. Also, not the most efficient way to run wiring on the surface of the header plate. You will have to re-route the wiring if you ever decide to cover the studs, etc. Otherwise.......You did accomplish what you set out to do.

So do you have to unplug the power every time it rains? I mean, water will drip into that plug pretty easily right? Pretty good way to get electrocuted in your own yard on a rainy day. All it takes is a squirrel gnawing through that thing and your toast.

yeah but thats not code compliant, in fact if the code official ever found out, you'd get fined, furthermore if you had a fire your insurance may not cover the damage....you can't run an extension cord to power permanent wiring !

I just hope no one thinks this is the proper or even a safe way to power a shed. If you know as little about electrical safety as this, please seek help from an electrician to avoid injury or possible death.

Trip hazard. Bury the drop cord. When it comes to electricity, safety first.

That’s not a plug, it’s a receptacle. A plug is what goes into the receptacle. For anyone that wants to know the proper way to wire a shed, don’t watch this video.

Dear LOOOORD! I dont normally jump into the comments to rag people, but holllly cow is this bad. #1...15 amp extension cord? Is that a 20 amp circuit from the house? If so you are definitely making the extension cord the fusible link there. If you power 18 to 19 amps...that cord is going to melt down. Not to mention the lack of weather tightness. #2 That wiring is just run like someone who NEVER plans on insulation nor closing those walls. I can even imagine running raw wire like that in an area where Im going to be slinging wood, or nails, or hammers, etc... there is a reason that almost every code in the world requires wire to be kept safe from impact either in the wall or in a conduit, etc... #3 if you were going to do it this way, why not run a 30 or 50 amp input socket and a sub panel so you could run it off a 30 or 50 amp cord from a generator OR from a 30 or 50 amp circuit from the house? At least they have a twist lock to them and can be found with housings that are weather tight. This isnt clever nor safe, nor even all that easy, honestly. Its almost easier to do it properly. I hope you rectify some of this and take electricity seriously, bc this is just asking for trouble. Even the way you have a small saw right there by the plug/switch combo is a bad idea...

Wow, he needs to spend a little more time planning his videos. Production value sucks. Also, how lazy is he for not running electrical wiring underground to his shed. It was only 30 or 40 feet. Now every time he wants to turn on a light in the shed he needs to run an extension cord.
