Using Ikea blinds to make blackout blinds in our Ford Transit Custom

Having considered both blinds and curtains for our conversion I opted for blinds due to their look and ease of use, however at over £1000 for 5 which we needed, we opted to make our own using Ikea hoppvals blackout blinds.
Using cardboard as a template to get the right size and shape, which was then transferred onto 3mm plywood, we formed a frame which we then carpeted.
Fixing the blind to the frame we used pop rivets and stainless self tapping screws to fix the completed blind to the van.
In all it took about 2 days in total to construct 5 blinds, however we are pleased with the final results and feel the time and effort was well worth it.
Thanks for watching.

Hello. Thank you, we are really pleased with them, although they are not black out as IKEA claimed.

Hello, thanks for taking the time to view and comment. They did take a lot longer than I initially thought they would, although the greatest time was spent getting the right shape and straight lines. The Barn doors took 4 hours from start to finish per window. But now... its was all worth it as we love the look and ease of use.

Hi what blinds were these from ikea looks great. Also what thickness of wood are you using thanks

Hello. Thanks for viewing my video and commenting. The blinds were the hoppval model and the Ply wood was 3mm, anything thicker and it will not bend to work around the body work contours.

did you use 80cm blinds for the doors?
@royclark8385
@royclark8385 10 месяцев назад
Hello. Thanks for viewing my video. Yes on the sliding door I used a 80cm × 150cmm, opposite the sliding door I used a 100 × 150cm the rear quarter (lwb vehicle) I used a 120 × 150cm and the 2 rear barn doors I used 2 60 × 155cm. Before installing try to cushion the spring from vibrating against the metal channel its housed in, as when driving you will hear the spring rattling against the housing, this was annoying till we cushioned it, now its quiet. Hope that's helps.

@@royclark8385 so they arrived today, got them in test fitted and then wondered about the spring rattle you mentioned, did you mean some white fluff type insulation to dampen the spring?

Also did you bother with channel each end like others have shown? They seem to hang well without, can’t decide if I need them

Hello. Yes I used a 80cm for the sliding door and a 100cm for opposite the sliding door. As for channels, no we didn't, the blinds hang very well although in order to get a good "black out" we made the window cut out of the frames at least an inch shorter each end than the blind. You will also need to add some sound proofing material on the blind frames to stop the springs, within the blinds from rattling against their housing when driving. We discovered this after fixing them into the van.

Real shame after all that work that they let the light through. Really good job fitting them though 👍

Hello. Thanks for viewing my video. I was a bit surprised as to how much light comes through for blackout blinds, however having now slept in the van it's only noticeable during sunlight hours, come the evening they are very good and let out minimal interior light, which is good as we like to stealth camp.
