@spencerrr9878

This video just randomly popped up on my feed and I decided to watch because I too just finished my first year at college as a CS major :) I'm in Cali at a community college / planning to transfer to a U.C. and out here we basically mainly focus on C/C++ and a little bit of Java. My professor was a VP engineer at IBM for years so he has us do the real base level languages that cant be toyed with on iPads like this but this totally sounds cool and I def need to try it now, thanks for the insight!
@juanalvarado7794
@juanalvarado7794 4 года назад
Quick question. Im also in Cali and i want to dive into a CS degree. Is the degree generalized? I mean like youll learn everything there is to know about programing and software engineering of are there more specialized degrees? I want to eventually work for google or amazon or companies like netflix on the software development side. Would CS be the way to go?
@spencerrr9878
@spencerrr9878 4 года назад
@@juanalvarado7794 Yes absolutely!! I just transfered to currently go to Cal State Fullerton in LA (virtually of course 😭) and I'm pursing my CS degree with a concentration in cyber security. Especially in California and especially especially in the SF Bay Area where I'm from you need a degree(or to be pursuing one) in CS, maths, or some type of related engineering (electrical, computer, systems, etc) to even get internships for software engineering. I know that most of the CSUs curriculum mainly focused on 1) basic core programming concepts and logic 2) math 3) then upper level concepts 4) then most of your upper division requirements are software engineering based 5) you should have around 15 units remaining for electives and these can be used to concentrate and specialize in many areas of CS (at CSU Fullerton there is concentrations in Cyber security, software engineering, data science, game programming, and theory) each of these concentrations is basically taking extra 400 & 500 level classes that pertain to a specific area of interest in CS, so when you apply for a job you can say you learned a lot of SE generally but you also specialized in it (in this example). Most schools offer an MS in SE and ik some of the UCs (Irvine and Berkeley I believe) offer a BS of SE but especially for a BS it's best to stick to CS as you don't lock yourself into one field and you can still get an SE job easily if you don't have a SE concentration or specific BS in SE. Ik that was a lot of info so sorry but yeah 😂👌 I'm a junior rn and I didn't really get into CS until summer before senior year of highs school and I knew nothing about anything. So if you feel the same come back to this thread and I'll answer any questions I can :)

That's just one solution for many future problems. You cannot be a serious programmer using an ipad, there's no way around it. and forcing yourself to make compromises makes no sense when you can just get a laptop instead.

@@jm1835 I would like to disagree I am a software engineer and we use mainly vms and Remote desktops to connect and work well using a powerful laptop just doesn't make sense the cost can be driven down by a powerful PC and you remotely connect to it as you will have much power to work with. Virtualization is the future and to access it you just need something like an iPad only though the apps should grow to support it

Why would you want to do that on a pc either? You would rather have a real server as a testing environment. I would really miss double xeons and my 120gb ram if I did that kind of stuff on a normal pc. On top, old servers with that great specs are really cheap today to get for like under 200 bucks. And ultimately you don't need the highest speed, but the resources to put a ton of virtual machines and switches up. So that's nothing a modern pc - if your aren't willing to pay the price of a car - can do for you. And if you have that amount of money you won't care about shooting 1000 dollars on an additional iPad just for fun.

Agree with video. I had iPad pro 2017 and really tried go make it work. Even tried ssh route to cloud computing but that fail for as a student because if I didn’t have connection I couldn’t really test my code. And as a student we are testing lots of codes to learn. I finally settled for a two in one. Writing experience not as great as iPad but will suffice for note taking but my coding efficiency in terms of learning shot way up. Having the ability to code locally as a student is the way to go. Even installed Ubuntu locally to learn

Great video, but one tip. If you have a server, make a VPN (very simple and easy) you then can connect to your VPN on your IPad and use an app to connect via SSH (I suggest Shelly).
@theloniousMac

One thing you can do is get an online account that gets you a virtual Mac, Windows, UNIX or LINUX system. You can then connect with your iPad and have a full blown dev environment. All kinds of things you can do here. You can keep your code in something like iCloud Drive, edit it directly, then bring up your virtual Mac using your AppleID and compile your code. You can even purchase an inexpensive refurbished MacBook Pro. Set it up at home for remote access. It can be set up to provide you with Mac, Windows, and LINUX desktops as well. Meanwhile you’re still using your iPad in class. Your iPad would need to be on WiFi and/or cellular of course. When you do shell stuff, there are terminal apps for the Mac that you can point to your remote service or your remote home Mac and do shell scripting.

You’d want a good mosh client than ssh, because it’s a protocol meant for mobile. There are some great apps (Blink and Terminus come to mind) but they’re fairly pricy. Although, you can compile blink yourself because it’s open source ($20 vs free)

I use the iPad daily to check servers and stuff over ssh, actually there are great free apps without adds that are really capable and manage multiple ssh connections like a charm. The iPad, Pro or not, is far better at handwritten notes and book reading. I can even draw vector based graphs on the go which I can later export into my home computer for CAD or laser cut. The iPad is capable for 95% of what you'd likely use, even some coding if you use SSH. The rest can be handled by your schools computer lab or remote access (if they provide such service). It's not about the device, it's about what you do with it. Do you think your field of study would have to frequently handle advanced Excel, code or other tasks that the iPad can't do easily? If you opt for the iPad, get the pencil but not the keyboard cover. You can get far better Bluetooth keyboards for cheaper and you only have to carry it when you think you'd use it. Not to mention swipe keyboard using the pencil is great on the go

What do you mean that you studied Python for the first semester? Just Python or there are more courses?

He's done other videos where he explains what he uses it for and a few regarding note taking on the iPad if you haven't already seen them

Or just get Ipad and then host a Cloud VM server and do that instead...relatively cheap and can do whatever you want.

Personally why do you go to university when we have online resources like Skillshare?
@HarrisCraycraft
@HarrisCraycraft 5 лет назад
University teaches a lot more than just academics; I grew a lot as an individual. But otherwise I agree with your sentiment.
@Paul-vm5hy
@Paul-vm5hy 5 лет назад
@@HarrisCraycraft great contacts for your later career there are gold. They provide you with support and infrastructure and often you have to do projects with others which increase your practical skills, soft skills or even end up in your first own company. On top you get tax advantages in most country's, huge discounts on software and hardware (or even free), and an academic degree is approved internationally. Good luck by trying to land a job in the UK or Germany or France by just typing "skillshare" in your resume. It's dumb but as long as most people deciding about who gets hired are 40+ years old we have to deal with that. To these people only "official" qualifications matter, not skills.
