Elly! You are a superstar. This is everything I try to explain to people. I have found the documents by WWF and Greenpeace who are explaining that boycotting could actually result in more damage to our environment - but they are not as loud to scream about this as they were when they first raised the issue. Not only does Palm give a bigger yield of oil, the palm also has a longer production life than most other vegetable oil crops so less land is required and less regrowth. I know that many plantations "bought" their RSPO certificates when it was first introduced but I believe much of that has now been stamped out though there are still farms that don't have the certificate. There are also many other countries that now grow Palm including in Africa - I'd love to see the company "Palm done Right" here. We also have a large plantation here in North Queensland and I wish they would sell to Australia but they export it. People would be surprised at just how much Palm they consume. It is sold as frying oil to fast food shops so chances are, people are eating it without knowing. I had a man have a go at me once while his daughter was eating a Nutella filled donut - I told him to check the jar next time he was in the supermarket. I was surprised a few years ago when I learned biofuel had palm as this would conflict the reasons people chose it. I do find it funny that people do hang on to one topic without thinking of the bigger picture. How many people consider how much land was cleared to build their house, the roads they drive on or even the land cleared to build a vineyard so they can have a glass of wine. It's definitely a tricky subject but I think you have covered it well.

@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking I researched for over a year before deciding on my recipe. Given I was already making lotions and creams it didn't make sense to be against palm in my soap. Many emulsifiers and thickeners in cream making are either natural and palm derived, or synthetic and palm free. I had to make a choice there and decided I wanted natural over synthetic. Definitely not an easy decision and lots of defending.
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking

Well said. That is a well thought-out response and shows that informed choices can be made, not only in 'specialist' undertakings like home-made soap making but also in a wider application to everyday life choices in other realms, such as in cooking, clothing, home heating, vehicle choices and more.

Palm oil serves a good purpose. Like everything else we need to make wise, educated choices. I choose to not use palm oil in my soaps but only because I live in Texas. I am up to my armpits in cattle. I have access to really good, grass-fed, pasture raised, long horn tallow on the hoof. It makes more sense for me to use what lives here local to me. It makes sense to me.

Elly!! thanks for bringing up this topic. I live in Guatemala, in Central America. We used to be a country called the Land of Eternal Spring, but the climate has changed so much... In my country we have the jungle of Petén (where Tikal, the Mayan city, is) and this jungle used to be a lung of the world, they used to say, but it has been corrupted and severely deforested irresponsibly for the precious and extremely hard woods there and to plant palm plants to produce oil. And the government does nothing, only receive illegal money as a bribe to allow the looting of the jungle and the planting of palm plants. It is very sad to live in such a beautiful country like mine, with years of corrupt governments. As a people we hope that this will soon change, God willing. Recently, I bought a pound of Mazola shortening (on the label it says palm oil) just to test a batch of soap and be able to check its texture, hardness, properties, and I think it will be the only one I will ever buy. And yes, it really is very cheap, like 1.30 american dollars per pound, but the cost behind it is very high if it is not RSPO and here in Guatemala we do not have RSPO palm oil as far as I know. I love your channel, your recipes, your way of life (I try to live very similar to the way you do when cooking, dressing or making, and I think a lot like you, and I live in a semi-rural part of my town) Very grateful to you for so much knowledge!! A hug!!

how deforestation? palm tree is a tree also. I believe this propaganda war because palm oil industry is not completely controlled by big corporations.
@KarinaMD.11
@KarinaMD.11 10 месяцев назад
Deforestation because they razed the jungle to plant the palm plant. In the process they eliminated many native plant species and left many animals without habitat. In addition to poaching some wild cats, exotic birds and many others and stealing the precious woods, we call it here because of its extreme hardness (from a variety of trees! converting palm cultivation into an extension monoculture).

Such a hot topic. I use rspo palm oil in my Soaps and it improves the quality of the soap. You explained how the industry works well and the farming of palm. I'm a believer that palm is still a vegan product but others don't have the same view due to deforestation. Land and habitat was cleared many centuries ago for farming but the difference now is we know how to do it sustainably. Land will continue to be cleared even just for housing and infrastructure. Like you said, if we stop using palm, it just also means we then need expand in other supply chains. I too have educated people that palm oil is used in everything we consume and is usually listed as vegetable oil.

Hi Elly. I'm from Malaysia and palm oil really our main oil here for cooking and other things and it is also the cheapest oil here and the palm oil here is in liquid oil. I learn to make soap from your channel. I use the soapcalc to get the recipe and I make it using palm oil and it turns out wonderful. Thank you Elly.

Yes Nurul Hidayah is right. I live in Malaysia too and really, we cannot escape palm oil. It's used by most of our hawkers and in our restaurants. It is also more affordable for Malaysian citizens. Some of us may not be able to afford the more expensive cooking oils. And because palm oil has a high smoke point and no cholesterol, it is the best affordable oil to use for Malaysian cuisine which involves a lot of frying. I want to believe (and pray) that the large palm oil companies here in Malaysia are getting better at their sustainability practises. Elly, think this is my first time commenting here. I do love your channel and your approach to soap making. I have been making soap for several years and enjoy watching your videos to reinforce what I have learnt before. We have a very similar soap making style and vibe. Sometimes I don't feel very confident about the way I go about making mine, and seeing you make and talk about it helps me realise I am going in the right direction. Hi Didi, yes we have the same palm olein in Malaysia. It's available in all our supermarkets. We all just refer to it as palm oil and I don't think people here even realise there is a difference 😅. It's in a liquid state all the time.

This was extremely helpful. I found your channel and I’m grateful for it as I have been wanting to make soap for the past 20 years and I finally have the opportunity to start. And this is exactly a question that I had. My daughter commented about palm oil, and we both left our discussion wanting to each do more research. I appreciate you speaking about questioning all of our ingredients in all aspects of our lives. I believe that it really is a balance. I also believe that supporting sustainable products is more helpful than avoiding them altogether because there is always a side effect. I had decided to start with a Castile soap, but I do wonder about the carbon footprint of any olive oil I would be using. I live in the United States. For all I know, there may be sustainable oils right in my own backyard so I will continue to do research but I’m thrilled with your channel. So informative, so practical. Love it love it love it and thank you.

I was totally absorbed in this (for me) very educational video Elly. When I began making soap 3 years ago I purchased some palm oil and used it but never bought more because of the controversy and also judgmental comments I read towards some soap makers who used it, and liked it. I have since done research myself on this touchy subject and am changing my views, even more so after your "must watch" video with much more information than I took the time to search for myself. Your calm, well thought out presentation on the why and why not, and delving into all the habitat and sustainability issues on using palm oil, I feel much better informed on making the decision to use it again in my soap. Thank you Elly for all the hours of time time you put into showing us all sides on this soapy topic! 🐾🥰

Thank you for being so thorough and thoughtful about such a complex subject.👏 I never used palm oil for the first few years I made soap, but the past year or two have tried it in a few recipes that I really like. I bought the culinary Spectrum "organic all-vegetable shortening" available here in the US: it is 100% palm oil, Fair Trade, RSPO, and Rainforest Alliance-certified. I hope that means that the farmers have better working conditions and get a fairer price for their oil, and feel it important to support those who are trying to produce more sustainably. A bonus is that this shortening is "no stir" and ready to use. I'm not in the least tempted to cook with it, though! I'm still happy with my palm-free recipes and don't know how long palm oil will be on my shelf, but it's been nice to have a choice and try different formulas. However, as a small-batch maker who doesn't sell, I don't have the cost constraints of someone who depends on soap making for a living. Always there are trade-offs and complications!

Great video! Thanks for the nuanced explanation and emphasis on examining all our consumer choices rather than oversimplifying morality. I think there are probably issues with production of many common soap ingredients, including cacao butter, coconut oil, and other products that may not be fair trade or sustainable... not to mention the footprint of internationally shipping all these products. We all need to learn more about where things come from and make better choices, but it doesn't have to be all or nothing. It's possible to reduce consumption, or try to purchase from more ethical suppliers, regardless of what we're buying.

I didn’t know that palm oil was the closest in semblance to animal fats. I still stand with my comment. Like Elly, I have to add, I believe there’s a bigger picture when it comes to our responsibility in living sustainably. Thank you for your research and thoughtful commentary. I agree we all need to do our part and avoid certain products including palm oil. However, in many countries with lax laws on labeling, there's no way to know for sure if palm oil is in the product. Also there are some people who are allergic to oils such as coconut or avocado. We may all try to avoid it the best we can but I think it's virtually impossible to completely avoid palm oil.

You've shed a lot of light on this topic. I appreciate you doing that. I'm a soap maker and I've been trying to avoid palm, knowing just how impossible it is to avoid, even ingredients like waxes and surfactants are "naturally derived" from palm. Its been a significant challenge in the development of my formulas. You've been a tremendous help to that too, btw. Honestly, Your links to the wwf, and also your conversation about consumerism and things like processed foods and fast fashion being the bigger evils, as big business will consume palm at a mightier rate than any of us small batch soap makers... As long as we do our part in not buying heavily packaged, overly processed foods and don't buy new tee shirts every 3 months, I think our choices and impacts might be greater than avoiding the bucket of palm.... especially if its a credible RSPO source. I know some articles state that RSPO is a hack, and plantations only behave when the inspection takes place... but I don't know how much of that is propaganda. Honestly you've allowed me a new perspective to consider in buying my ingredients. Thanks for making this video. I know this was a bit of a risk, because I know how hot this conversation can be sometime among soapers.
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking

Oh thank you, I really appreciate your comment and I think you've summarised my thoughts about it all perfectly. One of the reasons it's so hard to look closely at our choices around the use of palm is that it brings up other issues in our consumption behaviour - most people really don't want to take an honest look at that. I'm far from perfect myself, and I know I've got some problematic blind spots, but I'm trying to be honest and do the right thing. I think that's an example worth sharing in itself. Thanks again, really loved your comment :)

Awareness and education are all we can do to try and better our personal footprints. Our trends will continue to slowly evoke change in consumerism. I'm so star struck you replied to my comment! Oh wow Elly, that was an excellent, excellent video and you are spot on with saying that if we ban/don’t use palm oil, another crop will fill the demand for vegetable oil and that crop could be many times worse than palm oil, such a good point. You also made a huge point with living thoughtfully in your own home, between composting my “wet” items, and re using the unavoidable zip lock bags some products come in……I think I only put my garbage bag out once every 6 months because very little goes in it 😂. I really had to laugh when you talked about your clothes, I am still wearing some from nearly 20 years ago when we moved up from Tasmania ( left the cold clothes behind). I have a front loading wash machine, which is so gentle on clothes, use my own home made powder ( your recipe) and my clothes are still in great condition ! I also find many good quality clothes in op shops rather than retail shops, so yeah…..I really enjoyed this video and glad you mentioned tallow too , especially if your local butcher will give you some cheap. Looking forward to part 2. 😊💜

There are so many amazing reasons to use palm oil. it can not be GMO'd. it needs no processing. the palm kernel can be used for bubbles and the fruit used for creamyness and nice bubbles. it's truly amazing, more fruit can be grown on one tree than most other trees. actually using less square acreage than coconut and others. In my humble opinion ommiting palm oil has people using avocado and almond oils that are devestating entire countries, ex mexico...... palm oil literally brought millions of people out of poverty and starvation. 80% of the palm oil is used in third world countries. I'm so amazed by your beautiful mind. you are absolutely amazing and i am so so grateful that you made a true video about palm oil

Fantastic presentation. There are also many small independent palm plantations, 2-3 hectares, started by small communities/families attempting to raise their standards of life. These independent plantation now provide children's education that was not available before, local food and clothing shops and most importantly a living wage (in terms of the plantations geographic location). These families are now able to read and write and feed themselves, buy not supporting RSPO you could be cancelling this self sustaining community of the basics we all take for granted and I just don't want to be responsible for depriving small communities of these basics. In my own opinion soap without palm oil is never as good as soap that does, palm oil in soap has to many qualities that make a noticeable difference that can not be replicated.

Hi Elly, thank you for your video 💕 I was thinking about this issue recently, especially using palm oil in toothpaste. What I'm thinking is - how desperate are we to use palm oil? Is it really so vital for our survival? Do we need all those products or can we actually live without it comfortably? What do you think?
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking 10 месяцев назад
I like your thinking Katerina. I think we can definitely live quite comfortably without it! But the reality is our food systems are very reliante on it, so it's not going away anytime soon. Even if we choose not to use it, we still need to support everyone else who does consume it to be aware of the issues and consume in a responsible way.

@@EllysEverydaySoapMakingFood industry is money-making business, sometimes I think trying to make people ill by adding all sorts of things into products, including sugar. I think the aim is to spread knowledge among people, read labels and make a better choice (choose what does not contain palm oil/sugar... because it doesn't need to be added). After all it is our responsibility to save the planet. I will start reading labels more now to transition to palm oil-free soaps, shampoo and toothpaste, at least as much as I can. It’s a very cheap oil to produce since the palms can live 20 years! Palm oil is also questionable because of how it’s processed. The oil is refined, bleached and deodorized (RBDPO)using substances that would hide if rancid and wont provide health benefits. I don’t use it for cooking but for soap making. This oil produces empty calories when consumed. If you give margarine to ants, they won’t eat it; however, they would eat butter or other fats. I would not advise anyone to eat it… it’s not healthy…. Our body isn’t design to consume these type of processed “food”
