Gregg Berhalter's USMNT were absolutely humiliated by Colombia in DC losing 5-1 in a pre-Copa America friendly. Tim Weah scored the only goal for the US in a game where the entire team looked toothless, clueless and scared. Tac and I break it down.

I don’t like GB. Haven’t for a long time. He’s not a good coach for so many reasons, but, my latest reason is how he answers tough questions in interviews. He’s a weasel. He rarely just owns a shit performance, tactics, personnel decisions etc. He’s always got quick answers and just rambles to weasel out of it. He’s blowing 2026. The easiest way to sum up this game is that it was a naïve team lead by a naïve coach. The players performed poorly, but you could see their obvious discomfort with what they were instructed to do, primarily in aspects of playing out of the back at all costs. That's not a tactic the team takes unless strictly instructed to do so, and Colombia expected it and found even more ways to capitalize on it as the game went on. It's criminal for us to continue to have a tactician that sets us up to fail so badly. I can guarantee you that if Colombia's staff were given truth serum, they'd share how overjoyed they were that the US kept playing that way while they sat ready to pounce on the mistakes. However, I doubt they would say they were stunned or surprised by the gullible tactics of their opponent. Even discounting the late goals, the second goal was the fault of this tactic. They tried to pass out of the back under a trap, and gave up a corner. That corner then produced a goal that wouldn't have a happened if the team were given the freedom to skip lines in their play from the D, or simply get the ball out of a dangerous area instead of living on a razor's edge against a very good and intelligent opponent.

Chris, what we could try to do is have inverted wingers to support the fullbacks because Robinson gets no support and loses the ball frequently, we could use a double pivot of Adams and Cardoso to connect with the CB and the offense, Gio can play as inverted wingers and free roam as a playmaker behind haji.
@chrishenderson1262
@chrishenderson1262 Месяц назад
@@sebastianmidar5159 I agree on the double pivot, and we could have done it with the starting personnel we had yesterday. The first two adjustments GGG needed to make were to take a more direct approach instead of insisting on playing out of the back under the traps being set, and to move McKennie into a more defensive midfield role to fortify that area along with Cardoso. He did neither. You could tell the players were playing against their instincts with respect to the discomfort that was clear in their body language when trying to play out of the back. To me that shows it was rigid instruction from GGG and they don't feel they have any freedom to adjust proactively. And McKennie remained our midfielder highest up the pitch while Reyna was dropping deep. Anyone with half a brain can profile those two players and know their roles should be flipped in that scenario, but GGG is entirely unable to diagnose such fundamental aspects of the game. It's really absurd at this point.

Football tactics and strategies are constantly changing yet Berhalter has barely changed his tactics in almost 5 years. Every season a coach implements a system that works. Over the course of that season teams will implement their version of that same system typically to decent successes. Most coaches are outdated after a season or two. Every now and then a coach comes along where a system works for an extended amount of time (Pep, Klopp, Tuchel etc.) At some point all of them will have to adapt to the changes of the game. These are the best coaches in the world. We've needed a coach for over 5+ years thats up to date with tactics/strategies yet we've done nothing. Is GGG the only problem or is it the leadership at this point? Think about it.

There are no friendly matches, at least in Argentina test matches are seen that way, those matches are used to test players or new tactics, but the coaches are constantly tested by the fans, whether in a match against Canada or against Germany. Friendly matches are those played by former footballers or RU-vidrs, which normally have a charitable purpose. 😂 Greetings from 🇦🇷👋

The first sign that Gregg shouldn’t have been rehired is that the PLAYERS wanted him back. Do players or humans in general want someone that pushes you all the time. The leadership should have eliminated Gregg as soon as the players said they wanted him back.

To put this into perspective we played a so so game for 75 minutes and stank up the last 15. And Colombia is a legitimate Copa contender. But all that is beside the point. Berhalter is a predictable, play-by-the-numbers coach who does not inspire either players or fans. He mismanged the WC, both on and off the field. And yes he did sweep Mexico in '21, but a declining Mexico. That was his zenith. After that, he finished third in the 2022 CONCACAF Octagonal, behind Mexico and Canada. This reign of mediocrity and oh-so-close losses has created this fantasy world of how the US is poised for greatness. Sports fans, nothing could be farther from the truth. Americas have no idea how far the disparity is between world class players and American players.

I appreciate the sharp criticism you and Tac offer, and I understand in today's climate why you want to avoid saying anything negative about the "rainbow jerseys" as a matter of controversy, but I think you're a little quick to dismiss what's being alluded to when the super-chats bring it up: Our federation, US soccer, is more interested in ideological preening than developing and maintaining a competitive national team's program that one day, maybe, could win a World Cup. Gay rights is entirely irrelevant to the purpose of a professional international soccer program, and injecting politics into soccer makes it part of the culture wars and alienates one half of the country -- some of which might otherwise become fans of the USMNT and USWNT. It shows how unserious we are as a footballing nation. The activism of the USWNT that mainstream sports media adores and promotes has also hampered things in this regard too. You rightfully expressed frustration on stream that maybe the money needed to get the right sort of people to turn the ship around is not there because it would have to drastically overpay past the real market value of the men's female counterparts because of the successful rabble-rousing "equal pay" campaign has tied up resources and capital that could be spent furthering the program. And US Soccer, not wanting to offend the cultural opinion-makers of the country, seemed to actually support the revolt and lawsuits its own employees were leading against it. Again, US soccer wants to be aligned more with the country's and corporate DEI zeigeist than be able to field a team that will be competitive against the Colombias of the world. That's the larger point here. You rightfully criticize the soft mentality of our players. That mentality is encouraged by the corporate culture and values of US Soccer that reward mediocrity instead of footballing excellence. So the "rainbow jerseys" are in fact part of the problem whatever one may thing about the worthiness of gay civil rights as a whole. You and Tac have brilliantly explained GreGG's incompetence through the years, but that, as you guy acknowledge, is beating a dead horse at this point. The problem is structural within US Soccer, as well as cultural within our country. The USMNT is treated like the Olympics -- just something the casual can tune in for when it comes around every 4 years, i.e. the World Cup. If the country actually cared, 1) we would not be significantly outnumbered by Colombia fans in D.C. and 2) losing 5-1 to Colombia in DC would stir an outrage that would put pressure on US Soccer to not coast by and be the nepotistic, crony-filled, corporatist grift that it is. It's also an issue that most USMNT fixtures are on subscriber-access streaming services, so the access to new fans or children to get inspired and play is bottle-necked. So Big Media doesn't cover US soccer in the way it was starting to like 10 years ago because they don't have the rights or it is behind a paywall. I'm afraid things are worse than you guys state because this, our most-talented generation, will be wasted and won't take its chance in 2026 to make some noise in the tournament. It won't inspire the next generation of players and fans because of endemic corruption, ideology, and corporate greed as soccer in the US has become a lucrative but niche-market enterprise. All this doesn't bode well for the future.

At least in the old days we played at 100% intensity. Our current players have more skill than our teams have had in the past. We have some solid pros who play in Europe, some at big name clubs. But overall, that is what they are, solid pros. When they step up against a very good international side they are still outclassed. To win against these teams they need to play like they care. In addition, GGG needs to realize we cannot go toe toe with every opponent in the world. Tactics need to change. You can play it out of the back 90% of the time against our regional opponents because we have more talent. But when we are playing teams with superior talent I don’t think there is anything wrong with playing counter attacking football. And sending a long ball out of the back to break the pressure. We are much too predictable. Good quality sides figure this out quickly and exploit our inability to play out of the back cleanly. Our players need to play harder and recognize they are not world class, and GGG needs to realize this and alter his tactics against clearly superior competition. Just my two cents.
