The negative space in the fantail (the bottle opener) reminds me of the negative space they added to Discovery's pylons. It must serve some specific purpose on both ships other than stylistic. The overall shape of the primary hull is taken almost entirely from that early concept Voyager. Look at the stern of the primary hull - it slopes down at a steep angle, just like the concept model (it's really hard to see in the sketches because of perspective distortion but easy to see in the miniature).

I'd bet 100 bars of gold-pressed latinum that we'll be seeing Voyager-J in action this season. It's a classic Chekhov's Gun, otherwise they wouldn't have revealed it in the first place. I'm predicting it'll swoop in to save the day in the season finale.

Head canon technobabble explanation for detached floating nacelles: 31st Century Nacelles operate through an advanced quantum geometrodynamic graviton tether. In essence the main ship body contains a null zone typically represented by a void or gap in the spaceframe which is lined by an incredibly dense nanomolecular substance - Gravidronium. Once installed this material is then bombarded by focused Theta Radiation - this 'activates' the Gravidronium creating a perpetual 'charge' - producing quantum graviton waves. This is called the quantum geometrodynamic graviton Anchor. The nacelles are lined with activated Gravidronium that has been charged to a reversed polarity to the QGG Anchor. The quantum graviton waves produced by the nacelles intersect with the Anchors waves forming a 'QGG Tether'. This Tether once established is able to now exist independently from any power source as it is sustained almost indefinitely by the very quantum graviton waves that are being created by the interaction between the nacelle's and Anchors Gravidronium. Consequently this Tether also functions as a medium for phased warp plasma feeding to the nacelles. The benefits of the QGG Tether system are many. Because the nacelles have no 'physical' connection to the rest of the ship - any damage to the nacelles will not jeopardise the rest of the ship as there is no means for any energy overload to feedback into the warp core. This Tether system also reduces the ship mass and stress on the hull during manoeuvres. In addition because there are no 'physical' pylons it removes that vulnerability. Currently their are no means by which a graviton Tether can be interrupted or attacked by external forces. THERE. For the next person to complain about floating nacelles, show them this. :)

There's a lot that doesn't.
@steveg5122
@steveg5122 3 года назад
Because it looks like crap if you smooth render it. That is the problem with the TOS enterprise, it...just lacks surface detail so it looks like a model. Greebles catch the eye, make shadows, interrupt light, etc. Star Trek TMP gave us the aztek panel designs, the 4 foot enterprise D added some greebly bits to the Aztek TNG models. It is a real world thing that makes the designs look a certain way.

2:35 - The commander is most correct, here! The Discovery crew is NOT reacting to the name of the ship, or anything to do with that! The use of the name is PURELY to get a reaction from us fans, who HAVE previously seen a USS Voyager in action. The only reason the Discovery crew reacts as they do, is because they hardly knew ANY Federation starship with even an A designation, back in the 23rd century. So, for them to see ANY Starfleet vessel which is designated a 10th successor to its original, is an amazing sight for them. I believe there’s some sort of trope that’s used, when a surprise is pulled, and whilst it gives the audience a reaction of awe or shock, that’s also conveyed through a parallel reaction - different, but similar - by the character(s) on screen witnessing the same event. Deep Space Nine’s episode “Shadows and Symbols” gave us one of the best examples of this in Trek - As we experience the relief of Sisko finding an orb, and re-opening the Bajoran Wormhole, so the main characters in the other plotlines experience miraculous changes in their fortunes. Of course this is the very crux of the episode, and it doesn’t need to be in order to invoke that same trope or idea. But this Voyager-J encounter works basically the same way.

I am excited about Season 3 as well, it opened up a whole lot of paths for this show and even spin offs. Imagine them creating a new series with Enterprise N or something Voyager J? You are arguing that advanced tech from the 32nd century is dumb on a computer, a piece of technology that is nothing short of magical compared to technology from 900 years ago. Anything should go as far as technology is concerned. As far as "what if they come off in combat" well first, I think it is well established that the federation doesn't traditionally design their ships for combat, and second, I bring up that once again they've had multiple centuries to work this out. A Boeing 787 is expected to fly almost the entire distance around the globe on two engines, one could ask "what if one of those engines fails?" a few decades ago, that may have even been a valid question, but over decades of development, engine technology has become extremely redundant to the point where we can be sure that they won't fail, even in the middle of the ocean.

I think it is great if it functions as expected. If these detached parts can move of their own accord then we have ships that can alter their length, centre of mass, etc. Not to mention that vulnerable areas have been removed, the neck, the pylons. I have also noticed the bridge is very deep set into all these ships, even the Discovery got that treatment. It suggests these ships have to stand their ground a bit more/be more adaptable rather than warp off to safety or retreat, which fits what we know so far in regards to limited warp travel. You could argue there are elements from the Prometheus present in all these future designs, given their ability to become multiple targets rather than one. It would be easier to move a nacelle out of the way of fire than the whole ship at short notice. At this point I think anyone critical of the design route is well entitled to be, given we have seen nothing yet in terms of how these ships perform in the wild. On the other hand, it is quite suggestive to some who can see the potential thinking behind it. We shall have to wait and see!
@positronicfeed

The saucer section is definetely more Prometheus, which is why I'm not too keen on it. It needs to be a gentler and lower curve imho, but the proportions of the nacelles and the engineering section are bang on for a Voyager. I bet the detached nacelles move up when it goes to warp.

I really like that they essentially fixed discovery by going far into the future. Now we get to see all new stuff instead of them trying to shoe horn all this into the past. Not only that but things like messing up the klingons look and all that. Also there was so much action you never got to know any of the characters. Season 3 seems like that is where Discovery starts to be its own show and its great to see all the future of technology, and you get to explore what the past might of held over last thousand years. Then could even start spinning off new shows with this time, say Voyager J? We get to watch that crew or maybe even an enterprise N or something. Base it on exploring again in the 32nd century after Star fleet has been essential gone for 100 years. New species, wars etc..Sounds pretty cool.

It’s the kick Star Trek as a franchise needed. Out of the 23rd where TNG, DS9 and voyager were set and into the unknown. I’ve always felt voyager should have been like the rebooted BSG but the franchise never took risks.

I don't like these low detail, sleek surface designs in general. This is especially the case for a high budget show like this one. That being said, I don't like these no connection narcells. What do they do if the tractor beam system or whatever else fails? Let me guess, space magic holds them in place nonetheless. Star Trek always has been fantastical, but they've lost me with these designs. I'm looking forward for the post Kurtzman era of Trek. If it ever happens that is.
@JohnnyZenith

The 32nd century is 900 years after Discovery. This isn't nearly fantastical enough. Shouldn't have set it so far in the future. The point is this far in the future everything would be like magic. See Arthur C Clarke.

I wonder if this Starfleet tries to keep the same sort of look to ships with legacy names. Like the Enterprise line keeps the Constitution structural lines, while the Voyager gets the pointy scoop structure. Wouldn't be surprised if there's a Saratoga with a Miranda structure somewhere if true.
@MantasticHams
@MantasticHams 3 года назад
I agree that the original voyager design is very good, but as someone who watched the show when it came out, all I can think of when I look at it is a late 90's high-end desktop PC case. The finish, the contouring, everything just SCREAMS the 90's version of futurism. I think the ship designs for this new era of star trek are aiming more for minimalism and modernism. The designs sort of strike me as how apple or samsung would design a ship, which is a bit funy to think about, but it does look more futuristic to me.

Frankly, I'm getting sick of the negative space ideas that John Eaves keeps adding to the CBS Trek ships. Detached nacelles is one step too far. There's no reason for all the spaces in a ship or connections to other parts of the ship. Why would anybody have a detached saucer section and nacelles? What technological problem were Starfleet having that made them do that to overcome some kind of issue? It's all style and no substance.
@BritneyLaZonga
@BritneyLaZonga 3 года назад
Why would you have a hovering / magnet train? Because it puts a lot strain on the material. I could imagine a similar reason - so, maybe some substance. And its a weak spot when under enemy fire. How many times did enemy ships target the warp nacelles or the struts (as recently seen in "Beyond"). Maybe they even have the power to get rid of the nacelles in case of damage and instantly replicate a new pair LOL

It is kind of cool that I can use the Voyager-J to open bottles of Coca-Cola imported from Mexico. ;) Seriously, though, I would want to see the Voyager-J in action in an episode before making any judgements. As it's likely still a science-battleship (similar to the Discovery, when you stop and think about it...) it's got to have a fair few tricks up its sleeve.
