It will be an absolute success. Good ownership, Winter City, potential big Hockey Market, low crime, clean city, economy doing pretty good, lots of disposable income, natural rivalry with Colorado and a future Winter Classic in Rice Eccles Stadium. As far as the name goes, If their going with Utah it has to be Utah Grizzlies, its the best of the bunch. The rest, Yeti, Eagles, Pioneers, Blizzard, Bees, Elk, Gulls, Wolverines, Mustangs, Outlaws, Saints, Swarm, Raptors, Storm. Or Salt Lake Stingers
Lol, I wonder what are your reasons for the city not being perfect.... Their crime and homeless is nowhere near the amount other cities have and it is one of the fastest growing metros in the country. The only thing you can really hold against them is the weather, it gets really smoggy and weird as the city is between mountains, the lake is a shitpool but that's pretty much it. It is rather difficult to get booze in the city since there's lot of church influence but it is otherwise a perfect city lol. Don't start the shit about mormons either, their communties have the highest quality of life and togetherness than any other 'demographic' in the country and they don't push you to join them either. Not to mention they are leaving SLC metro and getting outnumbered by out of state people.
Avs already have the Sasquatch foot and that used to be the old mascot so sorry Yetis is out of conversation go wolves I like that name more, wolves are more of a Utah thing so Go Wolves Avs are already the Yeti bigfoots tho, OK colorado can be sasquatches and Utah has mutated Himalayan Yetis thats fine our colorado bigfoots will destroy your Mormonized Yetis
I can't even imagine the buzz of an NHL team coming to your home city for the first time ever, that would be life changing. Good for you guys 👍 PS. I'm from a small city in Finland so I guess I'm out of luck 😄
It doesn't take a year to pick a name. But it takes time to design and produce logos, uniforms, merchandise, marketing, etc. It's not ridiculous at all. We've already seen this with the Washington Football Team and just recently, the entire PWHL. When the objective is to be operational, they'd rather not rush a decision that they can't change later. And in the meantime they get to sell placeholder apparel to people who are so excited they can't help themselves. Also, I'm pretty sure the Kraken took over a year to announce their team name. They just weren't in the league at the time so it wasn't as big of a deal. Utah has to be ready in a few months.
I think they're going to show mascot and name at the welcome party. That way they can announce it to deafening excitement rather than the sterile silence of social media.
Utah Cajuns. Hear me out, this surprisingly makes sense. The term "Cajun" comes from a rural pronunciation of Acadien (Acadian). The Utah Jazz came from Cajun country. The Cajun people arise from deported French Canadians known as Acadien’s. Imagine the Montreal Canadiens vs the Utah Cajuns.
Utah Blizzard works for me. If anyone has ever been to Utah during a snowstorm, they will get it! Those blizzards can be rather nasty. Ever seen a state snow shovel get stuck in the middle of the road? Ya, it happens!
It shouldn’t take a year. The Quebec Nordiques moved to Denver in the summer of 95 and they were named the Avalanche, logo and all, a month later. Let’s go!
No it doesn't. Have you ever been in the Wasatch Front during a blizzard? It's a perfect name for a location close to Park City and all the skiing and snow sports....
Venom does make sense given that we have rattlesnakes, scorpions, tarantulas, black widows, and brown recluses. But i agree there are better name choices. I personally like the sound of Utah Scorpions. It also gives a nod to the desert state the team came from.
It's well known that DG's research and opinions are severely lacking. It's the topics of the videos and the frequency that make him popular. And the fact that many people don't care about quality or don't have the perception to understand it
We started hearing rumors of NHL expansion possibilities during the 2022-23 playoffs. The Coyotes situation was also brought up, but was not preferred. Not sure why everyone was caught off guard in AZ. My feelings go out to all who are affected negatively.
If you want to find a lack of creativity re. team nicknames, look no further than MLS. All of the following teams are named "FC" (Football Club): Montreal, Toronto, Austin, Cincinnati, Nashville, New York City, one of the L.A. teams, Charlotte, and Dallas.
They have already been given $900 million in public funds for a stadium, so I’m betting the stadium will be largely from this and direct funding from Smith entertainment group.
Utah has 3 pro teams. Don't forget about soccer. Real Salt Lake, Utah Jazz, *Utah NHL*, and they are rumored to be at the top of the list for a MLB team. They could have 4 pro teams in the next 5 years.
I feel so sorry for Arizona and their fans but I must say, this move is probably the best thing that could happen to their franchise. They’re going to an owner who cares about the team and is excited about the future. The fans bought tickets immediately and are also excited about the future. As much as I want to see the nhl go back to Arizona, I don’t think they will with Alex Mereulo as a possible owner.
Utah has 4 pro sports teams not 2. Utah Jazz, Real Salt Lake, Utah Royals, and now Utah NHL. And look at Europe there are many teams called FC or SC for football club, soccer club, or sporting club. It absolutely works to have a name like Hockey Club. You shorten it to UHC or Utah HC.
I think you hit on a point.... picking a name, not too time consuming.... going through the legal process for trademark / copyright etc may take some time. I don't know
Question for the Depressed Giner ... Doesn't the Salt Lake area have 4 professional teams (Salt Lake Bees, Utah Jazz, Real Salt Lake, & the Utah Grizzlies) ... Isn't by definition a professional athlete someone who gets paid so they have 4 ... Should argue that they would have 3 major league teams & 1 or 2 minor league teams depending on what happens to the Grizzlies
Re. the nicknames for the teams. I agree, shouldn't take a year to pick a team name. I'd pick the Yeti - easy. Uniforms would look cool (muscular beast). Merchandising would be through the roof IMO, especially for the kids.
Utah HC ? ugh...that would be the most minor league thing they could do. Instead , pick a name and cal fanatic immediately....they'll bend over backwards to get the jersey made as it will be the first and only unique for the upcoming season, thus guaranteeing sales.
Why? Many of the teams in the NHL have names that have nothing to do with their locale. (e.g., Nashville Predators, Calgary Flames, Buffalo Sabres, LA Kings, etc.) I don't like the name "Yeti" simply because I don't like the word "yeti". Blizzard could be good (the double Z to tie in with the Jazz). I like Swarm, with a logo consisting of many bees of various sizes...or maybe one giant bee. Anyway, as they will begin play in the fall, they at least need a color scheme for their uniforms. The logo can come later.
my assumption is this will really be very good for Salt Lake City because it will result in increased added pressure to clean up the homeless encampments around Pioneer Park and elsewhere.. the city has so much going for it if you take away the bulky blight of the homeless west of downtown.. (there's the smoggy pollution inversion issue of course but, that's another problem for another topic I guess)..
Honestly. I understand though, why Ryan Smith is taking their time with rebranding from the Coyotes identity. Wants to get it right, make it fit with the state and the fans. Utah Yeti, Utah Blizzard (Being my favourite) then Utah Scorpions, Utah Stingers, Utah Wolverines. I kinda like Utah Wolf Pack, but the Rangers AHL affiliate is already the Hartford Wolf Pack
The Toronto Maple Leafs would never allow a second team in Toronto They actually wanted or I not if they got compensation when the NHL expanded to Ottawa years ago
I don't get the playing on the snow theme. Utah is a desert except for the Wasatch, and even then you have to be right in the middle of them to experience any real forest or much snow. I realize that Salt Lake City is near the Wasatch, but just to the west is the Great Salt Lake Desert, and the Salt Lake Valley is an arid region also.
I’m just speculating here. Maybe the reason they don’t want to name the team until a year from now is probably to monitor the Arizona coyotes progress with purchasing the land. If the Arizona group isn’t able to win the land bid would the coyotes be a defunct club? What agreement does the NHL, Arizona group and the Utah group have in place that we don’t know? The Utah coyotes is a perfect name (makes more sense than the JAZZ) if the Arizona group fails it attempts on securing the land. Just my two cents what do you think?
I think it has to do with the merchandising. Team name would take a couple of months, then to design the look, logo, colors, and whatever would be tied to it. Then to get jerseys, hats, clothing manufactured in time to have ready before the season starts.
Bruh Utah has three pro sports teams now. Like it or not the MLS exists and is unbelievably successful. Real Salt lake has been one of the top supported MLS teams in the entire league since it joined in 2005.
I am a huge a huge European football fan I love the premier League but one of the worst things that have cross the pond the last few years if the obsession with just saying your city then saying the sport they play tell me calling something Washington football team are Utah hockey club is just lazy and don't get me started on the last couple MLS expansion teams
I completely agree. I'm fine with the way European teams name their clubs but I also like the way we do it here and I hate when teams try to cross it over. Just feels wrong
So lazy lol. Just pick a name. You don’t want to associate yourself with a Washington commanders-like identity crisis right off the bat. Unreal stuff already…
Grizzlies, Golden Eagles, Screaming Eagles, etc. I know what a Yeti is (or is alleged to be), but when I think of Yeti, all I see is a cooler (Utah Coolers? ).
To be fair, I thought the brand/team identity of the Kraken was awesome, not like a minor or amateur league team name. They really hyped it up, and it was really cool. That's branding done right. But these guys did the Coyotes dirty, hard to think of a different nickname for them, because they really should have never been forced into this position if not for the shitty management going on behind the scenes.
Utah coyotes sounds fine and considering the amount of coyotes in utah is crazy so it fits and they bought the team so they wouldn't have to worry about branding rights
I think the team name must actually represent Utah somehow. Utah Pioneers or throwback to the OG hockey team here, Utah Golden Eagles. We dont need venom or fury, those go back to days of mullets and zubazz.
How many times do you have to be told when you talk about pro sports in Utah that with the addition of an NHL team Salt Lake City Utah will now have FOUR PRO SPORTS TEAMS. The current NHL team to begin play this coming season, the Utah Jazz if the NBA and two other professional sports teams that SEG owns. Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer and the Utah Royals of the National Womens Soccer League.... Whether you are the rest of these narrow-minded fools that follow you want to accept that or not it's a fact And you consistently blow off soccer's professional sport when there are teams within Major league soccer that are drawng HUGE crowds. Ginger you should know better You need to start recognizing and stop babbling I'm only telling the half if things ... Come on you can do better than this...
One thing I cannot stand Is why you think 2 different sports are gonna "coincide with one another"??!! 😂 They're NOT THE SAME SPORT You're the only one who talks like this lol. Some people like hockey some people like basketball many people like both! The depressed ginger ladies and gentlemen you gotta love him lol
