In Lecture 3, Dr. Petrusek explains how the ideological family that constitutes progressivism has roots not only in classical liberalism and libertarianism but also in their ideological enemy-utilitarianism. The focus of Lecture 3 is the relationship between utilitarianism and progressivism, and on the two features of utilitarianism that progressivism appropriates.

Reducing Utilitarianism to acting in accordance of one's feeling is not entirely accurate. Jeremy Bentham's hedonistic calculus uses a method to sort out pros and cons, that is weigh the consequences of one's actions. Admittedly, this could be emotionally based but NOT NECESSARILY SO. Bentham's cost-benefit analysis (hedonistic calculus) calls upon maximization of happiness and elimination of pain/suffering (as much as possible). This happiness is measured using intensity, duration, certainty, propinquity, fecundity, purity, and extent. To reflect upon these categories will surely take time and effort going above and beyond the knee-jerk "oh I want to do this or buy that, or vote for this guy". It is a meditation of one's self-interest which IS RATIONAL; moreover, it is possible to operate in this mode of thought as completely rational and not emotional if that kind of stoic stance brought about the greatest good.

Although meaning well, there is so much generalization without facts that I can't agree with his statements especially when it came to his using Larry Elder as an example of a victim of progressivism. Larry Elder has a far -right ideology. His views on the 2020 Presidential election are without foundation and he loves Trump. He is not a victim of Progressivism.

Utilitarianism, as you've defined it, also encompasses Nationalism, Catholicism, Militarism... and their various subgroups. Exiling or excommunicating individuals for not conforming to each group's dogma is a utilitarian characteristic of ideological groups in general, and is not exclusive to 'progressivism'. Progressivism is becoming a red herring in your otherwise excellent observations on 'wokeism'.

I do not get the point of this series. It seems to be a political screed against "progressivism". The last part about Gavin Newsome seems to be saying that he is a hypocrite and so are the "progressives" who voted for him. By this reasoning we should through away the Catholic Church which is full of hypocrites myself included. The series has not uplifted me at all and does not seem to fit in with Word On Fire. Am I missing something or will it all become clear when he talks about idolatry?

I don't like this series. Sounds like Ben Shapiro and similar content, which I actively avoid. I expect content fro Word on Fire that puts forth the beauty and truth of our Catholic faith and this falls far short. As for the video... the argument that I suppose you're making... that according to progressives whatever viewpoint a person from a marginalized group has is valid so long as it's not conservative and oh what hypocrisy that is, is kind of a tired talking point already. Again, other 'conservatives' have this covered well already. Oh, and progressives appropriated utilitarianism or something. Mind you, I am an educated person and that's all I got out of this. Please no more 'us versus them' stuff, the world has enough already.

Doctor, heal thyself. As a new Catholic and member of the Word On Fire Institute, I find the arguments and, and especially, the presentation in this series as repulsive and condescending as the progressives. Dr. Petrusek is not an evangelist; he is, at best, inciting the fervor of conservative ideologues. Political overcorrection does not heal division; self-inflicted backlash simply extinguishes the message. In this case, it blinds those who are in the most need of Jesus and stunts the growth of evangelization. This is not what I anticipated from Bishop Barron's evangelization training. I would suggest a re-evaluation of the "Truth" element of the "Beauty, Goodness, and Truth" model; it would be best to reflect Bishop's appeal and sensibilities. May God bless you, Bishop Barron. 🙏💙
