Actually Hitler knew about Normandy he just didn't consider it a problem. He survived because of 3 things,it was only one explosive,it was placed behind a oak table leg away from Hitler and it was in a wooden building with windows where some of the explosion was not contained

He got lucky!

The reason the bomb failed to take out Hitler was that at the last minute they moved the meeting from a windowless, underground briefing room to a shack above ground. When the bomb went off, rather than being trapped in the room, the explosive force merely blew out all the windows. There were still a couple of fatalities, but there was a heavy oaken table leg between Hitler and the case containing the bomb, which shielded him from most of the blast. A couple of other movies you should see are Conspiracy, Downfall and Anthropoid (Just see them- Downfall is the only one that will get you any clicks if you do a reaction)

Downfall from 2004 is an amazing movie about the last 10 days of Hitler's life when Soviets finally attacked Berlin So i recommend it if you want another historical movie

As others have said in the comments already, it was sheer luck that Hitler survived. Many historians believe that if any of those three things were different he would have been killed. If the meeting stayed in the wolf's lair, even with one explosive, and even if a wooden table leg separated the space between Hitler and the bomb, he would have died. It he had used both explosives, Hitler would have died even in the windowed room and even with a wooden table leg separating him and it. But man oh man... If that briercase didnt slide, and that officer didnt place it on the other side, they would have got him. Thats the real kicker. The smallest detail that was changed, even though its so small a detail - if it hadnt changed, even though a detail as big as which room they were in changed - they would have got him.. This movie made me proud of my heritage, being about half german, the other half being irish. It also makes me proud to be a human when the state of the world makes me ashamed to be one. With the world so full of cowards, so full of hate and fear and malice - there were and are still humans out there willing and indeed capable of standing up for what is right, turning their back on allegiences made to the wrong people, risking and indeed giving their lives, ultimately - "to show the world, that not all of us were like him." Maybe if we had more people like that in the world now, we could actually change things. But fear, fear has infected us. Fear is the mind killer, and it has killed most people's capacity to risk or sacrifice their lives for the sake of others.

Hitler definitely got lucky there! Great analysis of the human condition. If only we could all live in peace…

You are right in thinking that there was something in the environment that protected Hitler. The building they were in was not as strong as the usual place where the meetings were held; therefore the blast blew out the ceiling, windows, and doors. If the meeting had been inside the bunker the force of the blast would have been contained inside the building this being more lethal.

The whole oath military thing is one of the key reasons that the German military nowadys are considered "Staatsbürger in Uniform" meaning citizens in uniform. That means, you are only obligated to your conscience and to the German constitution. Any illegal orders are to be ignored and the consitution is to be defended at all cost. Stauffenbergs last line (which is accurate) "Long live sacred Germany" refers to the fact that they realized Hitler was an enemy of the state and people of Germany and the German people ultimately (they chose this path of course) were victims of his regime as well.

This movie is pretty accurate to what actually happened. The soldiers involved were shot and civilians like the former mayor of Leipzig Goerdeler were caught by the Gestapo and hung in concentration camps. Great reaction and i recommend watching Das Boot director‘s cut and All quiet on the western front.

Another film about another assasination attempt on Hitler is "13 Minutes" Georg Elser singlehandedly built a bomb and planted it where Hitler was to give a speech, but he left 13 minutes before it exploded

I think this film is Tom Cruise's best film. It was good to see him in a film outside of Mission: Impossible.

Maybe we should quote the great German Humorist and former Wehrmacht Lt. on what he said when he was asked if he'd been a good solider (he was a recipient of the Iron Cross 2nd Class): "No I was not a good solider, had I been one, good and loyal soldier, I would have been with the Men of July 20th, I think that should answer your question." Best regards Raoul G. Kunz

The scenes in Berlin were filmed in Berlin and Potsdam. They simplified parts of the real story and in reality there was no attempt to oust Stauffenberg. But there had been many discussions, if their oath to Hitler allowed them to murder him. Some had serious doubts about this. But in the end, after so many attempts of killing him had failed, most of the people in the resistance did know, that it was secondary if the coup would be successful, they had to try for the sake of a Germany after the Nazis. The main flaw of the coup was, that Stauffenberg was the head of the operation and the only one who had access to Hitler at that point. So he wasn't allowed to take his ohne life by the attempt to kill Hitler, something he would have been willing to do. The coup had a little chance to succeed if the officers in Berlin had reacted faster and dind't waited til Stauffenberg returned to Berlin. They lost haours and hours and when Stauffenberg gave the go, back in Berlin it was nearly hopeless to would have success. Only in one city the coup was completley successful: Paris The General of the Wehrmacht in Paris did successfully imprisoned all relevant SS and GESTAPO guys (1200 people) and had full control over the city. But after the coup failed in Berlin, he declared all of his actions as a training mission and had luck, that nobody rated him out. His boss, General Stülpnagel, the comander in chief for France did try to commit suicide but was saved and later on hanged. The resitance was dead after the failed Operation Walküre and mehr people died in the last 10 mounth of the second World War than in the nearly 5 years before. Only the members of resistence cought on the first day, were shot, all others were imprissiond, tourtured and stand before a show trial, where the worst Nazi justice mocked them and sreamed at them. All of them were hanged, some of them, like Admiral Canaris only a few days before the end of the war. The young West-German repbulic after the war, had great difficulties to come to terms with the people of the 20th of July, because a lot of veterans of the army hated the resitance. A lot of them maybe, because they hadn't had the courage to act in that way? It took nearly 10 years til the country honered them. When the German army was rebuild, 1955, because the NATO members thought, that they couldnt face the USSR without the Germans, the new army was seeking for rolemodels and the found them in the soldiers of the resitance. Nowadays they are seen as the heroes they had been.

The movie is really great, it's very acurate to the true story. Hitler did not die, because of the heavy and thick table made out of wood, which blocked the explosion . And the room was not optimal for the explosion, as they said in the movie, the meeting was planned to be in the bunker, where the explosion would have killed everyone in range. But the small house they where in let the blast of the bomb "escape"... Stauffenberg died as a national hero.

I wished the 20 July ‘44 plot was a success. Imagine how strong German democracy can be from the moment it’s brought back from the dead with a vengeance after 12 years of Nazi dictatorship. The Western European front of WWII would’ve ended much earlier had the assassination (and operation Valkyrie overall) been a success. Germany would’ve then joined forces with the British, Americans, Canadians, Australians, French, factions of the Soviets etc to take down the Japanese Empire (former “ally” of Germany) and what’s left of Fascist Italy. Oskar Schindler, Hans Muench, John Rabe, the Bielski brothers and other heroes that emerged in the Holocaust/WWII for their roles in saving innocent lives - helping them escape unscathed so that generations will live to tell the tale - would marvel and lead by example from the German anti-Nazi resistance movement (same goes for other resistance movements/freedom fighters). While I’m upset that it failed, I’m still happy that Adolf Hitler got what he deserved - opting out like the cowardly joke he was from the moment he arrived into the German society and gave the German people a bad name. Still happy that Germany (in particular the Bundeswehr - modern German armed forces) today still recognises the Valkyrie team as the shining example of German heroism, humanity and patriotism. P.S. Hitler’s inner circle that were in the Berghof tea scene were Schutzstaffel/SS supreme commander Heinrich Himmler, propaganda chief Joseph Goebbels, air force commander Herman Goering, architect and armament manufacturer Albert Speer, Hitler’s secretary Martin Bormann and field marshal Wilhelm Kietel

I know countries focus on different things in their history curriculum, and being german I learned a lot about ww2, we had a whole lesson on this assasination attempt, and we also especially focused on how the nazis came to power. Do americans not learn this? (I assume youre american?) That honestly explains a lot hearing "I wonder who Himmler is" kinda shocked me. But you gathered enough info, he basically was Hitlers number 2 from way before the nazis took over, the leader of the SS and the "architect of the holocaust" This is not meant to be condescending, ones education isnt ones fault and I'm glad you watched this and learned something

Hitler, was notoriously paranoid, often changing venues on short notice a common trait in dictators, even though they often are delusional, you'd have to be a special kind of delusional to not be acutely aware that people want you dead at all times. Not sure if it's even paranoia or just common sense at that point

@@kai_masters in my exprience the enjoyment of history class also _hughely_ depends on the teacher One year I had a teacher who clearly loved history and loved teaching and could make lessons so much fun and another year I had a teacher who just divied us into groups of 4, had us read a few pages in the textbook and then give presentations on that. Every. Single. Week

The reason the explosive didn't hit well was Tom when leaving accidentally tipped it over and some guy picked it up and put it on the other side of the table stand, which shielded them from the blast effects. From what I read, this movie was 100% real how it happened

The bomb was not successful for two reasons, it was moved from the bunker which had no windows and a steel door which would have magnified the blast to a building which had windows which allowed the blast to escape, also because the briefcase was moved a bit further away from Hitler by another officer unaware of it's contents. The table being big and heavy, protected Hitler from the blast. It reinforced Hitler's belief in his divine providence. Those hanged, were hanged with piano wire on meat hooks.
