I worked on the set and will never forget the first day of shooting. I had no clue what the show was about. Walked in to grab some food and there was Robert Maillet dressed as the master…. Mask and all trying to stuff a sandwich into his mouth Absolutely terrifying.
My brother worked security on set, and he showed me pictures of the stingers and the genital-less strigoi body. I was really freaked out but it looked really cool.
When you said lake ontario and showed a picture with all them houses on the lake where actually is that place it looks beautiful, I looked up lake ontario and its not that lol
I loved this series. I prefer Vampires to be Monsters in appearance instead of glammed up attractive humans. I liked that certain Stregoi went as far as putting on makeup and prosthetics to look more human in this show.
"Monsters" makes it too obvious. Vampires like Anne Rice's were the best to me. Horrific in their brutality and the fact that they looked like angels. Beautiful. Magical. Terribly deadly with little to no remorse.
I only discovered this show by accident and am amazed with the production quality and depth of the story. Guillermo del Toro does not disappoint. It's like his excellent movie Blade 2 but without Blade. Very well done vampire creature effects. Better than walking dead IMO because of the pseudo science, the rich mythology and the flashback to Nazi backstory. Excellent show and ending.
I remember when that infected rockstar took a piss one morning and all we hear is a "plopp" most likely his wiender dropping off. That scene made me shiver.
The reason the blind infected children were so fast was because they were cooked on a loam for two full moon's, ( means they were buried in the masters soil(dirt) and the masters worms were exchanged with their worms over that time making them supercharged in a way. The same goes with the masters mongrels, ( the ones in season 4 that were on a leash with a face mask that were super fast.
Quinland was a total badass and the best character on the show. And I loved how they blended the science in this. How they were a paracite, or an infection, which caused the body temps to be higher. It was really well done.
I think the reason why eichorst was different from the other strigoi is because he served the master so faithfully that the master rewarded him by specifically influencing his transformation 🤔
Idk, seeing them without the nose I just think Voldemort. I've never seen this show, heard people talking about it, just never got around to it. But seeing this video, seems interesting. Idk how I feel about the 6 foot intestine attack range. Seems pretty cheese there. Also makes me want to keep 6 foot distance going forward. Not cause of a pandemic or anything like that, but cause of vampires with worms. Although if it's parasites, wouldn't ivermectin work? I think I'm starting to figure out some of the nonsense in the real world now.
In my country (Romania) the word "strigoi" means a resless spirit, more like a ghost, not really a vampire. The ones that "suck" blood are named "moroi", and are dead children (by hand or by curse) who come at night and drink the blood of they're mothers. Also it is thought that they apear when is full moon. The strain is very cool tv series, one of the most coolest, but I had to explain this words from my culture. We also have "iele" , beautifull women that it is sed they were virgin priestess of Zamolxe, the Supreme God of our ancestors. When the Roman empire concured Dacia, they were raped by Roman soldiers, and because they didn't commit suicide after, they have been cursed for eternity. On one night per year they are permitted to take young man in the woods and....eat them alive, after they copulate. The strange thing is a lot of elders from old villages dismiss all other entities from our culture...except those "iele". Knoledge is life !
Vampire academy ?! Wtf?! I am sick of this pseudo mythological horror movies. Moroi princess?! The "moroi" don't even have sex, not to mention status. I know almost all of the mythical creatures from every culture are not real, but pls stop watching things that distort history. If something is a myth or a story tale invented hundred or thousands years ago.... that is history, is culture, is art, is the human belive of that time. Moroi princess?!?! I will pass this...
Been waiting for this video. I loved The Strain, a cool mix of bio-hazard horror, Zombie like drones, Elder Vampires, the supernatural and apocalyptic aftermath tropes, very good. Zack was very annoying though, I agree there, his character made me quite angry at times, but luckily the rest of the cast made up for that. ;)
I went to The Strain subreddit to vent about how annoying I found Zack. The first post I clicked on had a link to a r/FuckZack subreddit. There is an entire sub page dedicated just for hatred towards this kid. The writers truly made him unbearable
David Bradley is in a lot of things where you may have seen him. Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Hot Fuzz, Broadchurch, Captain America, he's a staple of British character actors. His appearance here is only surprising becauseit's such an American show.
Brilliant actor! Also considering that we’ve mostly seen him internationally in his later years. He’s amazing, I fell in love with him on the strain and then recognized him as filch. I was mind blown.
Yeah, VtM has all bases covered for whatever type of vampire people would like....tons of different powers and weaknesses depending on the lineage. The lore there is incredibly cool.
Guillermo del Toro actually directed blade 2 and at the time he already had the concept for the strigoi which he modified and used for the reapers in blade 2. Love the content by the way
there will NEVER be another 'vampire series' this good. It was better than any number of vampire MOVIES that Ive seen...and movies tend to be better viewing than a series, in my opinion. It took this many yrs post-The Strain, to truly REALIZE how blessed we were to be allowed into Guillermo's mind. And he was actually ahead of his time inasmuch as we saw what COVID did, and the obvious comparisons that one can make between that virus and the plot of 'The Strain'. Im binge watching all over again.
My friend I am with you 💯 such a creative take on vampires it would truly be shame to never revisit them. And yes I agree and said the same thing about the parallels to cv19 as a matter of fact the first reported cv case in nyc happened the day of the eclipse In real life, and the show touch’s on quite a few occult subjects and theory’s I liked how they made echorts have reptilian second eye lids….I always said the show got overshadowed by the walking dead hype train but at that point the show was already very boring to me
But I know I didn't like the end! I didn't think the older vampires would be conned into being killed so easily, due to them all being gathered in one place. But I didn't necessarily see them as evil because they understood that there shouldn't be more of themselves. No I don't know if that was because they knew they would starve. Or if they ultimate desire was to unite and become one as to get back into heaven.
The Strain was one of the few vampire productions where I was honestly scared while watching. I loved the program, but it was absolutely terrifying to imagine.
One thing I liked about this series was that they really showed just how threatening and OP vampires can be. Its nice that they also seem to strongly resemble the classic "nosferatu" as well
@@oduinn7948yeah, I can't wait for the new Nosferatu. Robert Eggers is a really good director, and I can definitely see Bill Skarsgard as Orlok. I believe Willem Defoe is playing the Van Helsing character.
I love how you connected the mythology of the book into the physiology of the show. That was actually quite clever and sound thinking. I think when it comes to Eichorst specifically, he had time to mutate or the virus mutated him. Either or, that’s just my working theory. Thank you for the examination I love your content.
@@Kamalablows Notice how I highlighted the connection. The mythology found within the books were in the show interpreted as physiological traits. So no, not close to the books. I guess you might have missed that.
I think Eichorst was a special case because the Master himself wanted him to be his special agent even before infecting him. That may be why he remained more himself even as a Strigoi, because his Master wished it.
This was one of my favorite vampire series...I loved true blood until they started changing it around and basically ruined it after 3 seasons but the strain was consistent..there are other series from the 80's that were good too but the strain was the best by far....I wish they would've gone a few more seasons or had an off chute series come from it..like a more detailed origin of the vampires..anyway I don't think they'll ever make another vampire series like this...
I believe they came from the fallen angel who in human form is known as Vlad tepes. He was either an original, and the master/ father vampire and/ or he turned himself into one using black magic, sorcery, necromancy etc... And created a vampire race of children . Not cause he loves them but so he could rule over the world and have his vampire children do his evil bidding. That's what I believe.and also that Satan is Vlad's half brother. The movie Penny dreadful reveals a lot. Or.. Satan is Dracula's/ Vlad's son... ??
Wow, I can't believe I missed this show! I'm going to check it out. I read the entire The Passage trilogy and it has some great and similar lore to this show. Unfortunately the show only lasted one season, but it is pretty interesting an unique.
I remember liking this series a lot when it first came out and being one of the few people that I knew that actually watched it. I believe it was on FX and so a lot of people didn’t really know about it, but it was really really well done, and featured a lot of great actors and actresses. The one thing that always stuck with me was the actual appearance of the master, it just was so chilling and just so perfect Guillermo Del Toro really deserves a lot of credit for what he was able to do with this series.
Yeah it's definitely worth a watch. If they had the money and type The walking Dead had which was very popular when this show was out it could have really been something popular but to me The walking Dead at this point was super boring
Quick side note, the name of strigoi comes from the Romanian mythology, where a strigoi is a vampiric type creature, capable to turn into animals and becoming invisibile.
Eichors doesn’t actually physically “talk”. He mimics speech via mouth movement but his “voice” is actually telepathically sent to whom he is “speaking”, making it seem like they are hearing talk
This show could've gone for another two or three seasons. Especially had they thoroughly explored the history of The ANCIENTS! Could've been so amazing!
Well at least one more but we're lucky to get 4 seasons as ratings were terrible. By all rights it should have been cancelled after the second season. There just wasn't enough people watching this brilliant show.
To this day my favorite vampire is the strigoi Kurt Barlow (played by the great Reggie Nalder) from 1979's Salem's Lot. And of course, you can't discuss strigois without mentioning Count Orlok from 1922's Nosferatu.
Vampire suggestions: Legacy of Kain - specifically the games from Blood Omen to Defiance, it covers loads of vampire mutations and evolutions. Highly suggest playing them too cause the story is incredibly good, could develop it into it's own series like you did with Underworld. Warhammer 40k - There are vampires in the 40k universe, though they arent talked about all that much, the main factions ofc get the most attention. Harry Potter - Vampires exist in that universe as well, they have been seen walking among wizards & being open about what they are. Your ideal Vampires - Basically, a video that describes the kind of vampires you'd like to see, whether in film, tv, or even video game. I'm honestly more interested in that kind of video than everything else, cause you clearly have a fascination with vampires, and anyone who likes vampire lore surely must have their own ideas. I'm personally making my own based on D&D, but with wider differences, capabilities, weaknesses, and strengths depending on their lifestyle choice. Like traditional blood sucking, burn in the sun types are referred to as Purist Vampires, there are Vampires who mostly feed on animals like the Cullens of Twilight but unlike the Cullens still suffer burns from sunlight, they can just tolerate it longer than Purists. And the closest to Humanized vampires are those that purchase blood or are given blood willingly, they can walk in daylight with no burns, but compared to other vampire types, they are naturally the weakest, just very slightly stronger than mortals. And I have a type of vampire that feeds too much, and if they give in too much to the thirst, they will become ravenous monsters similar to Underworld's Spawn of William, however they are seen as a plague to both vampires an vampire hunters - if say a vampire hunter an vampire were fighting but saw one of the monstrous vampires, they will drop their fight an try to kill the monster vampire, they are seen as that much of a danger to both blood sucker an living.
It's a real shame that Quinlan died in the final episode of the last season in just a few hours. I really wanted him to kill the Master permanently with his own hands. And really hoped that he would get a happy and fulfilling ending. But sadly, the dunmbass creators of this tv show just decided to kill him off. What a waste of such a badass character.
He wanted to die, though. He had lived through too much human BS. There's a deleted scene where Dutch and he are creating the silver coffin. He smiles with pleasure at the thought of being fully dead.
Man this has got to be the best Vampire series ever because they brought out a new vampire feed which is their sting rather than the old fashioned bite of Older vampire movies, The series ended so early but it will remain a masterpiece
I just came from Facebook where I saw a "Weird History" post about Azreal and how destructive he was. Came to RU-vid and saw this video and found it interesting enough to try but I've never even heard of this series. Weird to hear "Azreal" twice in the same day only minutes apart. It was the name of the vampires species that made me click on it. Stregoi isn't a name I've heard in a while and clearly whatever the show is, the creators took the lore seriously. No sunshine sparkling vamps here. (And Rhona Mitra too? Sign me up.)
I love this fresh not so fresh vampiric lore & take on this mythology & it excels in world building but got rushed to shit in the last seasons but man I cant lie I enjoyed most of it .
Blind watched this, not knowing what this was about. I was very intrigued, CDC, virus, parasite, quarantine, curfew. Then it went on about vampires, i was like "huh, interesting". Then flashbacks to Nazis, okay. Then they showed Master's face.....
Love this tv series!!! Del torro wasn't allowed to make it when he wanted to so he made blade 2 and used some of his ideas in it ..then years later got to make the strain
Rise of the Lycans is hella underrated. A whole origin movie about the most interesting character in all of Underworld and it set up introduces and explains everything involving the second movie. You almost can't watch it without rise of Lycans or else it feels like a blade ripoff. Too bad we didn't get an origin story about the only interesting character in Blade, Deacon Frost.
I would've loved to make a Blade sequel. I would've titled it. BLADE- FROSTBITE. My plot is that Frost survived and has become the Vampire equivilent of the T1000 and has become a God to a hidden coven a reaper Vampires Blade must stop Frost from getting a hidden vial of Blood from the first Vampire Drake/Dracula at the same time fighting against a Military man who wants to create a Vampire Army.
strigoi in romanian just means ghost. No romanian uses the word strigoi to describe or announce the presence of a vampire, we either say Vampir or occaisonally varcolac.
Maybe that was a subtle hint that all the turned vampires are just ghosts, infected with worms controlled by the elder. It does say when the elder dies, all their minions turn into "zombies". This shit is legit real btw.
I love your videos i think you're very thorough with your coverage of vampire/monster media and i think the CW Series Supernatural would be a very ripe topic for you to cover considering all the lore their is that can be covered
More like "sexless" or "genderless" since rn "asexua" is used to describe people who aren't attracted to anyone sexually. This might confuse some people
Hey could you possibly do the vampires from True Blood and maybe even Seraph of The End (a popular action vampire anime)? There’s also Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles. Thank you 😊
Thank you for making this! Huge fan of this show still! Disappointed they didn’t do the origins of The Ancients but other than that it was great from beginning to end.
Hi Cogan Lollins! Thank you so much to have spoken about these series (comic and tv). I never had the chance to look them up by myself, but I have to confess that this reinterpretation of the Vampires-Strigoi, with white blood and wyrms in their veins is quite cool too. Quinlan, the "Born", Half-Vampire Gladiator especially. I loved the Mythological background with Archangels and the Three Ancients (reminding me of the Trinity from various ancient Mythologies), also balanced by some pseudo-science explanations. The name "Strigoi" also reminds me of the fantasy universe shaped of the books and games of "The Witcher". I saw that you put the "Hidden One" from The Witcher III into a list of the strongest vampires, but I think that you slightly underestimated the capacities of the different vampires, their origins, and their story in that universe. I'd really love it if you make a more complete video on them too. Thank you so much. Best Regards to You!
Man, vampires in this show are fascinatingly terrifying. It was a good shift from Twilight like series. I deeply appreciated a masterfully crafted costumes and make up.
Quinn never sewed a new hand on after he lost his in Blade. He was growing a new one. Quinn belonged to the Cianteto clan of vampires that are native to Mexico. The clan is known to have the strength of ten men and can regenerate lost limbs.
The series Strain was supposed to have 8 seasons, but the audience drop was in the middle of the 3rd season, with the children and youth audience witnessing explicit sex scenes of two characters, the giant vampire Master was to die at the beginning of the 3rd season, and the Doctor Abraham was supposed to be the Master Vampire from the middle of Season 8 until the end, where it ended with Doctor Ephraim's sacrificial death, and the destruction of the Strigoi collective, would cause the death of everyone, where in the drastic finale of Season 4, they stay alive, we don't know how? the script and the story had changes that damaged and ended the series Strain for season 4, season 5 would be the Strigoi world apocalypse, which unfortunately did not happen, it would be an intense and terrifying event.
I'm not sure if you've taken a look at them but one vampire type I think would be interesting to do a video on is the Kindred from Vampire the Masquerade, both for the lore involving them and all the various different clans that exist and the unique abilities each clan possess.
Fun fact, STRIGOI refers mostly to the undead, not specifically to a vampire. Strigoi is from Romania, and it can mean also a ghost or a zombie or a vampire, anything that came back to life. To this day, there are backwards poor and undeveloped villages in Romania that burn the heart of the dead then drink a potion from the ashes to break any spell that might bring back the dead to haunt them.
I hear some people talk about this show and say it should have been a movie series. 3 movies based off the 3 books and if the first one failed or the second one then the third one wouldn't have been as good etc and so forth. I really think it was a good idea that they decided to make this a show. Did I agree with every single change they made no. Once I had finally read the books or listened to them on Audible (they are actually really good) and saw how many changes they made and realize how much the show was padded out and they could have put so much of that stuff from the books in there instead of all that stuff with them trying to make a disease to fight the strigoi, all the bullshit with Palmer etc Nora didn't have to die and Dutch still could have been a new character. Expanding on Eichorst as a character was genius he was such an evil son of a bitch. I felt like they went too far with Palmer though. I also hate it how much they rushed through the fourth season I'll I fell at the show should have been five seasons maybe even six. I do know at the time it's popularity was waning down. Still really happy with the show we got though just wish it had more from the books in there...
Nice summary. I love vampire origins lore. What do you think about Anne Rice Vampire Chronicles (Interview with the Vampire, Vampire Lestat etc.)? There are parallels to be drawn between the way Azriel's body was dismembered and buried in all corners of the world to the fate of Osiris.
I came across your channel while watching some videos about the underworld franchise Your videos are awesome hope you would do more mystical creatures as well
I loved the show cuz the vampires were different than the usual but the characters were so annoying. Don't even get me started on how....⚠️ SPOILER ⚠️ ....Nora died🙄
No disrespect meant in this correction: but asexual is a sexual orientation (or in many case - a lack thereof). The word you were thinking of is agender - which means no gender 💖
Richard Samel was outstanding in this series and really deserves more recognition. David Bradley would be the perfect Scrooge in another adaption of A Christmas Carol.
haha, i didn't watch this because i', still on the first season and didn't want spoilers, but i came here because it was labeled as "did anyone else think the master kind of looked like a puppet? more funny than scary?" i guess that was from a comment or something, but YES! how could every other scary thing in the show look SO-well created and so realistic, but the one, biggest, baddest guy looks like a hilariously bad Nosferatu puppet?! it was sooo funny! his confused expression and those giant, fat fingers! ahaha
While they keep their ears in the show, they do lose their noses but I get the impression it takes a while to happen. Eichorst, the master (in his first form we see) and the other ancients are without a nose. It would appear Borns don't lose their noses either judging by Quinlan's appearance
