Funny. There are MULTIPLE 'comments' that Seagal has made about Van Damme for decade(s)... all of them are unflattering and dismissive. This is the first one I've come across of Van Damme being given the same opportunity and he took the high road and was very genuine. Class act.
+RENEW There were several times on the Arsenio Hall Show back in they day where Segal would talk crap about JCVD. Every time JCVD went on the Arsenio Hall show, Arsenio would ask him about Segal hoping to get some dirt thrown back. JCVD would never say a bad word about Segal. Class act imo.
Actually JCVD has said he would kick Seagal's ass in a fight, has challenged him to one and taken the piss out of his fighting. Don't get me wrong, out of the two JCVD is much better than Seagal's huge ego matching his weight gain: m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3aTBCJ-c-3I.html
Mark Salt Please keep in mind with my following statement, I dislike Steven Seagal as a person. I honestly belive that Steven could take Van Damme, when they were both still in their prime. Now, the favor swings to VD, only because he is still in great shape.
Steven is a ass hole and thinks he is the coolest ever, i would take van damme in a fight between them two any day, van damme in a more humble person also
It`s a really genious answer,if it goes to that Seagal`s arrogance, would not allow him to like someone that is good,or someone that is more successful than him.
I remember watching Segal's "Hard to kill" when he was doing some weight training which was kind of comical comparing watching Van Damme's jacked body in his movies.. I believe JCVD has every right to say in a humble way that he is good...
He was talking about his nature, he has impressive professional record still he didn’t brag about his Fighting Skills. On other hand, Seagull would have said something like *”I am great at everything”* 😂😂😂
Seagal is emotionally dysfunctional, insecure & hides behind his wall of silence with that smirk. Van Damme is indeed classy and sincere here, complimenting Seagal with open arms, because Van Damme isn't insecure.
JCVD is a class act - and he can drop a one-liner with so well : "I don' wanna show these guys on TV". Still enjoy his films, and still go back sometimes and watch the older ones. The entertainment industry needs more like him.
I met JCVD when he was married to Gladys Portuguese at a world gym opening in Spokane Washington early 80's maybe 84.. He was super nice. I told him he would be a great action star he said I am trying.
Jean Claude Van Damme out classes Steven Seagal, he's such an awesome dude. I like the fact that JCVD speaks highly of him, like he respects him, despite both men disliking each other, something Seagal's ego refuses to do. I'm a fan of both men, but past or present, JCVD would totally annihilate Seagal.
Shane Walsh There's a clip here on RU-vid when Steven Seagal was on Arsenio Hall's show back when he did "Hard To Kill", I believe, and he said some fairly condescending things about Jean Claude. Arsenio simply asked him "what he thought" about Jean Claude Van-Damme, and Seagal was very evasive in his response. All he would finally say after pausing a few seconds was, "Um...could we change the subject." Seagal is very good in his own way and style, but he's ALWAYS had a reputation for being pretty arrogant and very full of himself and his own skills, etc. Too bad, because Jean Claude is supposed to be the exact opposite-a VERY nice guy and great to work with and also still VERY fit and skillful. Oh well...
+Shane Walsh l have never heard Seagal say much of anything about VanDamme. All the talk is from Jean Claude. Hey my wife was an airline stewardess for Lufthansa said she saw him in 1st class harranging his girlfriend for hours on the flight from Europe to NY said VanDamme mocked and scolded her the whole flight... LoL bitches can be irritating, though hey it happened
+METALGEARSOL1D I hate the fact that someone with your name would say something like that, after all if u are a fan, and i know i think u are...snake's body ( and moves) are based on van damme ...what make u think that a staged coreography like segal martial art could beat van damme martial arts...?
***** solid snake's body i mean the muscular form, and moves i mean the style of combat...untill mgs3 when they changed it into another tipe called cqc....but in mgs2 for example he used the 360 spin kick of van damme
***** listen now i know u didn't understand the meaning of my response to "metalgearsol1d" ....anyway.... if u search for van damme u will know that he is a pro in various martial arts..like chuck norris or bruce lee...and unlike segal he won various titles before he become actor...so go and search on Google and study a little bit...
Gotta love how the interviewer giggled when Van Damme said Segal should lose some weight. But Van Damme kept it very courteous and professional, backing it up by saying it was for the sake of the action scenes, which is true. Props to Van Damme.
@Dean Just Dean Seagal had never good shape, even when he was thinner. The guy is lazy and at 70s your metabolism really slows done and you have to fight decay every day with adequate sports and nutrition. Seagal just sits around.
Stallone said that Seagal started talking shit to Van Damme in a party at his place. Van Damme then asked Seagal to back up his talk in a fight and challenged him to a fight outside Stallone's house. Van Damme went outside and waited but Seagal just disappeared. Stallone said "Van Damme was too strong, Seagal wanted none of it"
I started training tae kwon do when i was 14 years old, because of this guy. Have trained well over 15 years now! i grew up watching JCVD films, He is old and so am i now - time flies!!
"Why doesn't he like you?" "Because maybe I'm good, Very good.." that was hilarious. The whole thing about seagal is damn funny even if unintended. Great guy!
Van Damme is the consistent gentleman. I can't think of one time in Seagal's career that he did not trash him. Even after Van Damme called him out a few times and Steven ran away and dodged him. Still he gives a fellow actor props when "Clearly" he doesn't deserve it. It's always been only about jealousy on the part of Seagal. Drop the mic.
I have a lot of respect for Van Damme. Not just for his initial career and success but also overcoming some personal demons he had to face and coming back just as strong as ever. I also like how humble he is talking about Seagal. It tells me that underneath all his accomplishments he's a good man and that goes a long way in saying something positive about a person.
Wrong! Maybe compare it with the time because a long time ago when Seagal was humble then Van Damme was cocky with full of overconfidence but now they are getting older and wiser, probably calmer and more accepting. I like both of them.
***** Except for the Under Seige movies, most of Seagal's movies are low production rehashes meant for Direct to Video. He wears the same clothes in all his movies and all the storylines are similar with Seagal playin an ex-cop, ex-marine, ex-ranger. The only difference is that he grows fatter with each movie and needs stunt double for even running.
what the hell you talking about bro??? steven seagal had been talking shit abt vandamme since ages ago. he even challenged him to fight. look at stallone interview. THE GUY IS FUCKING ARROGANT. i really wished vandamme beat him up so bad and put him in his place.
In 2001 Van Damme came to Brazil launch the Replicant film, had programs received the highest ratings at the time ... He touched everyone with his kindness and humility ... people in Brazil love Jean Claude Van Damme, Best Actor movies. Sorry, I don´t speak english very well...I speak portuguese.
Van Damme was my idol growing up. I think I've seen Bloodsport over 100 times. Followed his career from low budget films like Black Eagle to big budget like Time Cop. I remember in the late 80s/early 90s there were a spate of low budget martial arts coming out of America, and Van Damme was the face of that movement.
Every year I admire Van Damme more and more. He looks like a deity in his older movies and pretty good even now. And has made actually great adventure movies in which he acts well. Loved Maximum Risk recently.
Steven Seagal is messed up for talking trash about Van Damme the way he has for so long. In the end, Seagal has put on weight and stopped doing decent films way before Van Damme did. Even some of his movies from the mid-90s that became straight to DVD/VHS films like they have now are still pretty good. Van Damme was a professional fighter and his fighting record is posted a lot over the net for proof. He holds a 2nd or 3rd dan black belt in shotokan karate and he has a very humble spirit. He always is so nice in interviews, etc. He never even took Seagal's words harsh which most people would. It is true, Seagal needs to lose weight. That's all he's ever said that could wound the man. Don't get me wrong, Seagal is I think a 7th dan in Aikido and I know he's very good at what he has learned, and I like his late 80s and early 90s classics, but he seems like a jerk. Karma's a biach I suppose.....
Heh, JVCD was NOT like he is now. When he was in his prime, he was SO not humble; saying how hot he was, a womanizer, didn't give a shit about anyone or anything - even when he took out the eye of that stuntman. An accident, but Van Damme was such an arrogant prick about it - didn't even visit the guy in the hospital. The reason why I'm such a big fan of JCVD is then he got off drugs, stopped womanizing, made amends and really turned his life around. Is a completely different person today. If you haven't, you should see "Until death". his character literally goes thru the same transitions. Also the movie JCVD - he really breaks down and confesses that he let fame go to his head and what an ass he was. So I don't blame Segal, initially, but Segal should grow up and forgive - JCVD is an awesome guy today.
@Igor Bosnjak Well, yeah, to other actors and his fans he was cool. But to some he was an asshole - even he says it. I know a couple of directors that worked with him and he was just a terrible jerk. He even admits this in interviews and his 8 part special on TV. He totally turned his life around and is awesome to everybody.
Personally, I like both of them, I feel hurt when they talk trash about their contemporaries. There was once a rivalry between Stallone and Schwarzenegger.
hell yeah old seagals old movies are awesome, hard to kill, out for justice, above the law and more but hes an actual joke now. i still watch his old shit.
@@tellurye Wait... You never said what he did to Seagal to make Seagal talk such trash though. And Seagal talked trash about everyone who is not him basically. All that other stuff has nothing to do with my issues with what Seagal did. Smh....
Van Damme is a living legend and great teacher. His movies are all my favorites - he brings out the actions and intense emotions e.g in Blood sport when a crushed pill was dashed in his eyes.
I agree! I was watching a clip were Seagal was bashing Van damme but Van was saying nice things about Seagal. Van damme is a true professional and has allot of class. I have the utmost respect for the man.
I thought that was very gracious of Van Damn to not bury Segal; especially in light of the unkind words Segal had for him in the past. Right on, Jean-Claude!
Van Damme is a 100x cooler than Segal. Segal is a dirty mofo and is a pathelogical liar. Van Damme is absolutly cool. I could care less if hes not a real fighter. But hes got that cheezy 80s goosebump raising flame on the screen.
Van Varenberg (van damme to you unknowing folks) Was an international karate champion. He has full contact trophies as well as typical tourney trophies. He IS a real fighter. Tired of folks spewing trash when they can't even do a simple bit of research before speaking on things they know nothing of.
@JD Yea i liked Segals style in the first phase of his movies. You really felt he was this master of Aikido which I had never heard of until I saw him in action.
+Geezart Your comment brings up a very important point. People often look to the martial arts as a means of self-defense. But, in developed countries at least, our opponents are far more likely to be heart disease, diabetes, and inflammation-based health conditions than muggers and kidnappers. All of those things are related to overweight and obesity. Learning kicks, joint locks, strikes, and so on is fine, but if we're concerned about our safety and well being, we should first look to the size of our bodies.
JCVD is really one of the few action stars that hasn't really changed in looks much over the years. The guy is still in great shape, doesn't look like he's gained a pound. As always he seems very respectful of other actors...despite how lowly they've spoken about him in the past. Got to respect someone who knows how to take the highroad.
1:00 this man has every opportunity to bring up the 30 years of Segal constantly talking shit but never backing it up but gracefully says "I met the guy a few times, I love him but he does like me very much" the meanest thing he said about Segal was "hes a little fat" meanwhile Segal be like "Van Damme runs from me, I would squash him like a bug, hes not a real martial artist". I applaud you Mr. Van Damme.
There is good in every person . I like Mr Jean Claude Van Damme because you are a legend in marcial arts , your mind , body and spirit is one . That makes you human. You give credit when its due to other people , you are humble. You have confidence in your own abilities . Respectfully yours.
That's the spirit. Even if Seagal is an asshole and is making terrible movies for more than a decade, back then, his movies were very enjoyable and he brought something unique to the table in the sense, that he was not a muscular guy, but still had great physical abilities and great charisma. Today he is a joke, even if i am still a fan of Seagal i must admit it.
After all the things Seagal said about him and Jean-Claude was a perfect gent when he had the chance to get him back .. Now that's the way it should be done ;) ... Van Damme is class
"I am aware!" 😉👍 Seen JCVD lots of time on French TV and even though he has his own initials on his cap not once did I get the sense of an ego! Man has worked hard and deserves respect. 🏆
Steven Seagal needs to grow up and take part in Expendables 4. He still says he won't take part because he doesn't like the actors but surely with Jean Claude Van Damme not in the third film he has no beef with the rest.
seagal has to be the boss, and sly ain't going to stand for that.besides' it's his movie anyway.also (seagal) likes to beat on actors, but he wouldn't fight van damme after talking a lot of sh$t,plus bas rutten and couture wanted to fight him and he declined.
I always thought he was jealous of Van Damme's physique and skill. Even in his prime, Seagal never looked as good as Van Damme. In fact "old" Van Damme still looks better than "young" Seagal. Van Damme regularly fought without a shirt while Seagal wore layers of clothes to hide his belly.
I have been a big fan of JCVD since his debut in No Retreat No Surrender. His latest movie 6 Bullets really showed the skills of JCVD. It has to be one of his greatest works. It wasn't all about fights and kicks, he showed such great emotion throughout the film and it was great. I think JCVD is showing he is more than just a great fighter he is also a great actor and I look forward to seeing him on the screen more.
for the record I'm a fan of both men & I'm a fighter, martial artist & teacher when it comes down to it a straight fight it's a 50/50 chance for both as for a strategy for both if Steven S. gets in close it's Steven's fight now on the other hand if Van Damme keeps him at long range & lands powerful strikes with a stick & move Van Damme would get it in the ring JCVD takes it , in the street S.S. take it much love to both
Personally i liked both when i was young, when i started doing martial arts and train with Peter Aerts they started to annoy me cause of how the fighting scenes were. Plus i am from the Netherlands and know some people that know van Damme from his competitive days, he was good, but not great, he made a wise move to become an actor as he wouldnt have become more then a Benelux champion (belgium/netherlands/luxembourg). Seagal and aikido i know about to a degree that aikido is more of an art form then actually effective in real combat on its own. In close hand to hand combat it can be effective, but at distance or on the ground its crap. Besides that Seagal lies alot, the master he claimed to have trained under if i am correct he could never have trained under when he claims to have done so, forgot the full story but do know in that he was full of it. We shouldnt forget that they are actors and that you cant judge them on their fighting ability in terms of in-ring ability as a good technical fighter doesnt make a good tactical fighter, same as technics in practice are way different they applying technics in an actual fight.
I love Van Damme, he's an incredible athlete and very fast and agile. HOWEVER, he would not be able to take on Steven Seagal no matter how fat he is today. It's two different styles (Shotokan VS Aikido) but don't forget Seagal is 6"4 and 7th Dan Black Belt in his art and he learned from one of the true Grandmasters. He would just grab JCVD and throw him down like a rag doll. Van Damme is a better character and I love how he showed respect...I wish Seagal would do the same.
+alienhunter36 Of course it does. That's why there are multiple weight divisions in MMA and boxing. Height = reach and weight advantage. Both are big advantages in fighting. Van damme is no doubt the better technical fighter but could easily get overpowered and choked out by a big guy like seagal. Assuming both in their prime. I doubt Seagal could do much these days.
Last I heard Van Damme is 6th dan, that was over 10 years ago I heard that. That means he is fully trained. Above 6th dan are given by other means, like what he have done for the Martial art.
All my 90's went in watching all those great 90's Action Heros. And Van Damme is one of them. I don't play the game of partiality, I like and love them all. We won't get those eras back. As well as the WWF era of the 90's and early 2000's.
Classy? he made a fat joke and said Segal hates him because he is better... I met JC once... raging ego and a flaming asshole (mid 90's, maybe he changed... I hope so.. but based on my experience, Jean Claude Van Damme holds the title of worst celebrity asshole I've ever met in my life... I actually regret meeting him it was that bad) I was a JCVD fan until that day... and maybe I view interviews like this through that lens... but I saw no class here. And I USED to be a fan of both...
