Possibly the rippingest, meanest van halen song of all. Love seeing Eddie's hands up close; wish we could see more of Alex. The two of them tear this up unlike anyone else ever could.
I recently started working on this song after countless attempts. Having this footage of him so close is a great help, especially on the solo. The ease with which he plays it is a testament to his virtuosity. It frees his mind so he can play with his heart. Best VH song ever. God bless King Edward!
He does make it look so effortless. I have a really wide stretch on the neck. That's no problem. The notes can be played. But, it's his fingers, man. His looseness and swing. He's always in the pocket. That can't really be learned or replicated. It's so agonizing. 😅
A world without Edward in it is still hard to comprehend. Long live the GOAT, his incredible legacy and the amazing works of art he left with us. Thanks for sharing this masterpiece.
Eddie’s legato is at the highest level in the land! And that tremolo picking is insane. Eddie is inspiration. Goosebumps!! What a massive talent. He’s our Beethoven
Acually Eddies doctor gave him some special earbud type hearing aids so that he could cancel out Dave's voice cause Eddie was getting these really bad migraines whenever he came in contact with Dave. 😃
At that age and still executing precision at that level is just not human...I've heard and seen all the greats...this guy is in a class and league all his own...his skills, precision, execution, and yes feel is just unfathomable
His singing on this tour right up to 2015 hurts to watch, it's embarassing. Doesn't even try to sing the tunes properly and would rather prance around like a clown. If I were EVH I'd be pissed off at him every.concert for making the band look bad.
ED didn't play enough guitar in his studio after 1990 . We can clearly hear the difference of velocity and precision. He said us " Keep on playing dudes..." He should have....
What’s so great about this song and the second side of 1984 is how dark it is. HFT opens up, but it’s almost like a fake right cross that makes you feel happy and bubbly. then BAMM!!!!! The next three songs are dark AF, and to hear what the band was going though at the time, just makes them even darker and meaner. Ed’s rhythm work was like he was playing for his life, and the solo on House of Pain, is one of his best. The second side of 1984 is peak Roth era, refined after five albums…..musical and rock perfection. Nothing musically comes close.
Eddie's playing was awesome. I love how he is giving Randy Rhoads some tribute in this song. They both influenced each other and the rest of the 80s guitar players.
All four original folks involved in this band, all played a pivital role. The 1st iteration of Van Halen was beyond good, as was the second version. Let us enjoy both!! It must be hard to handle fame and sucess, just like failure.
I second that this is a very good view of Eds hands for those of us trying to master this song. He has a lighter attack than I imagined, I believe he was a bit more aggro with the pick on the OG track. Very interesting that he clicks on his Phaser at 1:49 for the walk down lick then uses his Wah for the following bridge. This was pretty damn good, I thought Dave did well too (sure was wiping his nose a lot and he needs to stop all that snapping!_.
Dave: ok so what do I do with my hands .. I'll just look at Alex and Ed. Eddie: I don't Fu#$in care I'm just going to play my ass off. They came to see me anyway!!
this is such a great version honestly, Dave and Eddie, might hate each other previously, but in later years, not here. well, a little hate. but, a great version, and that's how it goes with VH lol for fans. take that Wolf.
So Roth turned this into spoken word? This track should have always been an instrumental because just the band’s playing is phenomenal on the original recorded track from 1984. The lyrics don’t fit the music but the original recorded version, in my opinion, is the band at its recorded instrument-playing best. Amazing changes in dynamics.
Very nice posting! You had amazing seats!! But, for the love of Gawd, can Ed Please make up with Sammy? PLEASE?!? It is Painful to hear Dave's voice. And, Please Ed, get Mikey back, while you're at it. As a parent of three I understand wanting to spend time with your kids and try to set them up in life. But, really? Just bring Sammy and Mikey back. Please, I beg of you. This is just sad. Awesome post, Thank You for sharing this.
Recorded Dave...Amazing! Live Dave...fucking throw away performance for so many years. Sad this really interesting and talented guy couldn't muster enough to maintain his voice or fucking remember lyrics. Audiences want performances at least close to the album. What a waste.
Are you that Ted you know that pot smoking Ted in the movie? Because with comments like wanting Sammy back in VH my guess is you got ripped off/short changed from your dealer!! My suggestion his get another dealer that way it'll stop you from saying cringe stuff like Sammy does. Oh & stay away from the Cabo Wabo too
I’m sorry but, David Lee Roth cannot sing man. He’s such in good shape (still is) and just can’t sing. Barely puts any effort into it. I say it all the time, I like Hagar’s personality better than Dave’s. But, I like the Roth era more.
