This brings tears to my eyes. A love of mine wanted this played at his funeral. I had to tell the family because I was the only person he told. And they played it as he wished.
I want it played at mine as well. The first time I heard it, I was going thru a breakup. That was 28 years ago. I still cry when I hear it, but for deeper reasons. This is such a moving song. The best!♥️♥️
Put Van Morrison in a vocal lineup and you could pick him out every time. Such a unique tone that’s consuming and beautiful. He’s Rembrandt with a microphone. What a gifted talent!❤
We played this song at my brothers funeral. He was 41 and passed from cancer. I never new he liked this song but he told our older brother to play it at his funeral when he new he wasn’t going to survive chemo
Van Morrison's voice is genius and he uses it to take this song to another level!! The song itself is about life and sailing into the unknown that comes after. Everything in the lyrics has a double meaning "And the bonny boat was won/one" "and when that foghorn whistle blows, I want to hear it, I don't have to fear it!" This song was his masterpiece!!
That sublime acoustic guitar that accompanies the singing can be found in many Van Morrison songs. It came as a pleasant surprise to learn it’s Van himself playing the guitar.
His music always seems to create a 75 Degree day , near a rushing Mountain Stream , with the filtered Sunlight casting glistening beams on the cascading water , gentlemen . More , please and thank you .
@@robbiemontgomery581 Van's albums from that period are all very strong and of a very high standard , so picking a favourite is very subjective. St Dominics preview is right up there for me.
@@Reno_Slim "I'm definitely Irish ... I don't think I want to go back to Belfast. I don't miss it with all the prejudice around. We're all the same and I think it's terrible what's happening.” - Van Morrison 1972. Must be awful when the actual person you’re correcting someone about makes you look like a prat.
Saw Van at Stony Brook University when this album was released they used a Hammond B-3 Organ / Lesley Tone Cabinet to identically nail that “ foghorn” sound live . Not a horn or cello !
Counter assumption (cause I don't really know) I thought the "fog horn" was playing the deepest bass notes on a Hammond b-3 ( the guys usually refer to it as the church organ) . My $.02 .
The only thing about the foghorn sound is that no musician on the song is credited with playing a cello, stand-up bass, organ or vibraphone. So that leaves us with sax.
I was taken to a Van Morrison concert over 30 years ago in Canada. I did not know any of his music but left the show, saying to my friend ... " That is one of the best shows I have ever been too ! Thanks. "
It's great when you experience an artist live, that you know nothing about, and you leave with that thought in mind. I once took someone who had never heard of him, to see John Prine, and they had that same experience
I am not surprised that the comments are all loving Van Morrison. I can see why he appeals to so many. He always had top-flight musicians playing with him. And, his voice is very good. I have tried and tried over the years, but . . . his music just bores me to tears.
Van Morrison's music is not easily defined. He's equally adapted to soul, blues, folk, rockabilly, adult contemporary, jazz, pop rock, and all points in between. Van's catalog of music is deep and varied, there's something for all music tastes. You won't be disappointed if you jump into this rabbithole.
This is a contender for my favorite Van Morrison song ever, but Brown Eyed Girl and It Stoned Me both just beat it out and put it in my 3rd place. Great song, Van is such a great vocalist!
One of those songs that still give me chills. Van has many great songs - "Brown-eyed Girl," "Domino", "Moondancey", Jackie Wilson Said", "Here Comes the Night", "Wild Night", so many others! And don't Forget "Gloria!" Thanks guys
Excellent choice! Time for a deep dive. Don't miss out on the album Astral Weeks - it's filled with delights. The track "Sweet Thing" just takes me to another world.
If you hear the foghorn, 1. you're in the fog and can't see where you're going and, 2. You're approaching land/rocks! You're in danger. Nowadays, we have radar but in the olden days it was guesswork.
YES !!! And, strings - low strings, like a cello - to simulate a foghorn. I always wondered whether there was some horn mixed in - a trombone or a bari sax, maybe even a tuba - but really i don't think so. I think he achieved his purpose with just those low strings. Really clever, though. I was in Seal Beach, one day, on the beach, looking for a girl i'd met - thickest fog i've ever seen. 'Literally could not see my hand in front of my face. And i remember the foghorn blowing. I never found her again. Her name was Sean. But i love this song, and it always makes me think of that experience.
The album this song is on, Moondance, is one of my favs of all time. So smooth. I got to see him once at Memphis in May in 96. My mom and her girlfriends went also. I was bragging to her that I was 20 feet away from the stage. She said, "Hell, i got to meet him". He is notoriously a private individual. They were staying at the Peabody where Van was (he rented out an entire floor) The day he was checking out, they went to go find him. He was walking down the hall and they tried to speak with him and he ignored them. They would not take no for an answer, chased him down, and got his autograph on his new book her friend had bought. Always tryin to out do me Mom! Love you!
La and Che. I hope you give others the joy that you give to me in your reactions to great music. Van is a fantastic singer. Thier is an extensive catalog of his to delve into. Can not wait for to react to Tupelo Honey. As always fellas great reaction!! Appreciate you 🙏 ❤
"Into the Mystic" is from Van Morrison's 1970 album, Moondance, an album that ranks high among the very best of the 20th century -- "And It Stoned Me", "Moondance", "Crazy Love", "Caravan", "Into the Mystic", "Come Running", "These Dreams of You", "Brand New Day", "Everyone", "Glad Tidings" -- Morrison swings in some way on every song, like drifting down a lazy river on a warm sunny day, a hot bowl of soup at home after months at sea, a couple dancing in the moonlight. Every track on that album is worth a reaction.
Van is a world treasure. Love to have you hit more of his: Jackie Wilson Says, St. Dominics Preview, Moondance, Have I Told You Lately, Domino, Wild Night, Cleaning Windows, Crazy Love, Caravan. That can get you started. More Van please!
Van started out in Northern Ireland and was in a Rock band named Them. Later he became very famous for his music and he settled down in Marin County outside of San Francisco
Typical greatness from one of the best Irish balladeers…😊just want to thank you both for such insightful reactions..i know others feel the same…i have also noticed your reactions have increased markedly….you both are appreciated.:…Louie
Great song ...Great artist... You really want to check the cover of the song by the Allman brothers.... Off the charts good.... Incredible guitar work.
It’s about being on the boat together. It’s hard but awesome. That time comes for all. We should work together o. The boat and then be grateful and go home when that horn blows.
Man, I'm loving your choices of classics to react to from that golden age of music. So many great songs and artists and you guys are jumping around to lots of different styles. Really fun. Gonna have to get on the Patreon and make some recs! Happy Sunday fellas.
Van used the last line of the song "It's Too Late to Stop Now" as the name of his 1974 live album recorded during the 1973 tour with his eleven-piece band, the Caledonia Soul Orchestra. In 2016 Van released a box set with recordings of multiple shows from the tour which gives an appreciation for how they performed the songs differently on different nights.
My favorite of his. My wife and I … we drop everything and slow dance to this song any time it comes on no matter where we are. It's led to some interesting experiences (Walmart anyone?) but this is a marriage policy that works. :)
