One assumes that it must have diesel engines to pump water no way will a battery one last. Who cares about emissions on a fire truck - the emissions from the toxic fires they attend make that irrelevant. What a joke.

@@barrymills3156 I suppose they could just tow a trailer with a water tank and a diesel powered water pump, then again that's going to effect the range of fire truck, so maybe better to tow trailer with a diesel truck, hang on I've remembered there are companies that make these already thinking they call them fire engines

Diesel fumes are the same whether they come from the road engine or some sort of diesel auxiliary power unit specifically for pumping.. As one of the claimed benefits of these EV Fire Appliances is that they supposedly stop the 'deadly' polluting Diesel fumes it can't have dedicated diesel-powered pump, rendering it absolutely useless for anything but the very smallest, short duration incidents.. As you quite rightly say, the fumes from a diesel powered Fire Appliance are going to have a negligible environmental impact at a large protracted fire.. Also, as a retired firefighter with over 20 years service I can confirm that water tank leaks are NOT common, especially not on NEW vehicles..

From a small town in upstate NY, the local school just received 2 EV school buses at $490k each with an expected range of 80 miles. We need to go back to one room school houses and bring back the Nuns as teachers and return their paddles

I've got to imagine on a cold day that range won't be enough. I know I lived in a couple of places growing up where there were very long rural bus routes. I'm sure the range estimate doesn't consider a load of kids and the heat running at full blast.
@dashcamandy2242
@dashcamandy2242 3 месяца назад
From a small town in southeastern CT, reading that has me scratching my head in disbelief! I can't help but wonder what that 80-mile range would be, once you factor in New England's hills - and our winters. With a busload of children. And some routes being down rural streets. It seems impractical; every time you start from a stop, a significant amount of current is needed, and I'm not sure there'd be enough regenerative braking happening to provide much assistance to the battery pack. At least, with a diesel bus, a half tank of gas, and two heater cores, if you get stuck somewhere, or if the vehicle suffers mechanical problems that don't disable the engine (flat tire, transmission failure, etc), you can keep the bus somewhat-warm. Electric bus? Might have to pray for a "battery event" to keep the kids warm while waiting for assistance, as electric heat takes additional power.
@bohunt8113
@bohunt8113 3 месяца назад
80 miles? That barely covers the route for some small schools in Upstate NY, especially during winter when running a heater reduces the range.

Bear in mind that driving to and from the scene is the SMALLEST task a fire pumper will be called upon to perform in an average run. Depending on configuration and intended role, a fire pumper may have to… *pump water (OF COURSE!). This is a VERY power hungry task to do all by itself, and you may be feeding MULTIPLE lines of varying diameter, from a 1 3/4″ attack line to a 2 1/2″ defensive line to a deck gun, and drawing all this water through a 6″ suction inlet that (again, depeding on the role) may be a HARD SUCTION that has to draw from a tank, resivour, or someone’s backyard pool and so doesn’t have any pressure pushing it IN. In a defensive posture, you may have MULTIPLE hand lines drawing several hundred GPM, and/or a deck gun drawing a couple THOUSAND GPM. If the fire is large, widespread, industrial, or has exposures on all sides, you may be there for HOURS just drawing water and throwing it on the adjacent buildings as well as into the fire that continues to burn in the involved structures. Those structures may or may not also contain a vehicle, maybe several vehicles, maybe BATTERY vehicles if it’s a factory with forklifts, maybe LPG vehicles, maybe a BIG tank of flammables somewhere inside or outside that is a CRITICAL exposure if you don’t want a catastropic BLEVE. And you want to trust a battery of unceratain and variable duration, epsecially in very hot or very cold weather and varying driving distances, with THAT?!? Good luck. *Run hydraulics for rescue tools (Rescue pumper configuration). The Jaws of Life, hydraulic shears, hydraulic rams, all are driven off a hydraulic pump. Hydraulic pumps pump at thousands of pounds of pressure. Thousands of pounds of pressure takes a lot of power. Power a battery that’s ALSO running a fire pump and other things may not have. Might make a car extracation interesting if they have to go to hand saws to cut you out. *Scene lighting. ANY fire truck is expected to provide SOME scene lighting, spotlights, floodlights, pole lights, etc., again for the ENTIRE duration of an incident. Granted that LEDs are not as energy hungry as the halogen bulbs of yore, but there’s STILL a SIGNIFICANT energy draw that you need THE WHOLE TIME, on TOP of the pump, the hydraulics, and the regular flashy revolvy lights and various and sundry noisemakers you use to get to the scene, AND the energy you lost GETTING to the scene, and you MIGHT want to be able to get back to charge your truck to be ready for the next emergency so you need some “Bingo Charge” number to assure you can get BACK from the scene, and given that this is a variable distance under variable conditions and variable loads, it’s pretty hard to put a number to this. *Auxilary power equipment. This is things like ventilation fans that can be the difference between saving a structure and saving a life or not because they can direct fire and smoke in the desired direction, hopefully away from unburned areas and/or dying people, as well as greatly improve the TRULY terrible visibility inside a building on fire. This sort of thing is often a corded appliance that plugs into a generator, but I’m not sure you would use your battery vehicle to drive a generator, but if your fans are 110 or 220, you would kinda HAVE to, on TOP of the pump, the hydraulics, and the regular flashy revolvy lights and various and sundry noisemakers you use to get to the scene, AND the energy you lost GETTING to the scene and the scene lighting and the need to be able to return to quarters for your special boy charger. …I’m leaving some things out, but also keep in mind you are dragging around tons of hose, tools, ladders, air tanks, guys, etc., ALL of which need to come BACK, as well as doing normal constant draw things like charging flashlights, powering radios, running AC or heat, keeping the dispatch computer and GPS live, and so forth, and maybe headlights would be nice? All of which has a CONSTANT power cost. And your job may not be done if your truck somehow keeps its charge through all THAT. Emergencies have this nasty tendency to be unscheduled, even inconvenient. So, your guys have got there, deployed, took everything off the truck, put wet on red, did the hot spots, helped in the investigation, walked the hoses, put them, the tools, the air tanks, and themselves back on the truck that by the grace of God still has enough power to get back to quarters…only to have the County call them out for a car fire that just started on the next block. Or they roll up on an unexpected flaming auto accident on the way back. It happens. This isn’t an issue with a diesel truck, but what do you do with your electric? Tell them “We can’t, not enough juice, wait for mutual aid”? Deploy your guys and hope their hose stream doesn’t die while they’re making an attack on something with an entrapped victim? Pray your lights don’t go out when your truck is blocking a highway? What to do, what to do… …and do you have enough time at quarters to recharge your truck before the child care center catches fire due to food on the stove? …guess we’ll find out… …Again, there’s a TON I’m leaving out here, but this should be enought to show how stupid an idea this is. Emergency vehicles are used for unscheduled emergencies under emergency conditions for however long the emergency lasts, and battery power just cannot be trusted for emeregencies. This is asinine and extremely dangerous, and should not be done. Full stop.

You didn’t mention water tanks at 1kg/litre capacity + tank weight, maybe this was a city based fires use case, but useless for rural bush fires where you dont have hydrants & bush fires can move faster than vehicles in the right conditions.
@mikeshaffer7673
@mikeshaffer7673 3 месяца назад
You are correct. I was spoiled by serving on a suburban department with easy access to hyrants and tanker shuttles, so we carried between 500 and 1500 gallons of water in the tank, depending on the apparatus. Thats at 8 pounds per gallon Imperial, 4000-12000 pounds or 2-6 short tons of water weight per unit. I talked to some rural FF though and they said they had what they carried unless there was a pond or swimming pooe, so they carried 5000 gallons per unit, 40,000 pounds, which is 20 short tons or 18 metric tons. Thats a lot of weight. On dinky propulsion you are gonna refill quick as you can so's your ready if you get called out on your way to quarters, but a chief with an EV unit may not want to until he gets back to extend the range. This means if the tones drop for a structure fire with entrapment while returning, the crew faces it with a depleted battery AND an empty water tank. Good luck with that. This WILL get someone killed, if it hasn't already, but Im not sure they'd tell us about if if it did. Here in the States our fake 'president' currently has a case before our Supreme Court where hes arguing that Government should be able to partner with social and other media to control what is said to we peasants, and the way the court is stacked he'll probably win. So if it DOES kill someone or a whole crew, well, its politically off-message so you cant know about it. My rural friends tell me they use ALL the water in a massive attack to try to blow the fire out like a birthday candle since they cant get more, but this isn't that subject so Ill leave it there. It takes a LOT of power to throw a LOT of water at once tho, so this tactic could be crippled by EV considerations as well, and thats a damn shame when FD tactics have to be shaped by pollitical virtue signalling instead of, you know, saving lives and surpressing fires the best way possible, but here we are...
@johngoard8272
@johngoard8272 3 месяца назад
Yes Simon this is a subject I have spoken about for a very long time and it not only involves fire trucks but also ambulances, police vehicles, SES vehicles and many other rescue service vehicles. It is simply madness when you think that they would even consider making electric bush fire trucks or any vehicles involved in any form of rescue in our remote rural areas for example when there would be no way of charging the wretched things when out in those remote locations. It cannot be too far into the future when some poor soul dies because of the capacity of a lithium ion battery.

@squiggymcsquig6170 Месяц назад
@@solarissv777 Yes, many (but not all) fire apparatus do have generators, and I have been curious as to whether or not a typical one would be capable of running a pump adequately for fireground operations (especially industrial or multi-story structures requiring multiple, longer lines and higher discharge pressures) while also providing for lights, communications, etc; keeping in mind that space on these vehicles is always at a premium, and the physical size of a truck-mounted generator has limitations. Could one feed multiple lines, be able to push enough water up an aerial ladder, provide water to a deluge gun all at the same time? I have been on scenes listening to my Detroit Diesels whine while the gauges on my pump panel tell me the hydrant has no more water to give and the pump is still not giving the hoses what they really should have. Never a good feeling when you start drawing a vacuum on the inlet gauge and have to cut back on discharge pressure to keep from collapsing the line from your hydrant while still getting enough water out of nozzles. Fire suppression takes a lot of energy, and that will never change as long as there are fires. Also, fully electric fire apparatus would not have the luxury of being able to wait any significant amount of time to be recharged if its batteries are flat after use, and I can only assume that batteries large enough for a fire engine would take significantly longer to charge than your average car. Getting a truck "back in service" as soon as possible after use is vital. Anyway, these are my thoughts, and I try to keep my mind open; but I have very serious doubts as to the real-world effectiveness/efficiency/safety of electric fire trucks.
@solarissv777
@solarissv777 Месяц назад
@@squiggymcsquig6170 I has a built in generator based on a bmw diesel engine, it kicks in if batteries have less then 20% charge remaining. Moreover, AFAIK in case if electronics failure it can drive the pump directly (through the clutch), and the valves for different intakes/discharges can be also operated manually. This thing is in fact a series hybrid, and not a true electric vehicle, but politicians for some reason do not want to admit it.

Their electric appliances, which have now been manufactured for a few years and are used in many European countries as well as the USA and now Canberra, are very reliable. The problems have been mainly with the pumping and water systems, not the electric motors or components. It is wrong to call out problems where they do not exist.

@robg521

Many years ago there was a documentary about an English council who brought in a private consultant to resolve problems over their failing rubbish bin collection service. He looked at how they ran the service and interviewed the staff, and the problem was their fleet of trucks were old and failing ‘which the staff had been complaining to their managers about for many years’, [every week 1 or 2 truck would be off the road in the repair shop so the staff were working extra hrs and overtime and putting extra strain on the other remaining trucks to take on the extra work loads] At the end of the programme It then turned out that the consultant’s salary was the same costs as purchasing 2 brand new bin lorries. So the staff had warned them that the lorries were so old they were repeatedly breaking down and needed replacing. Instead of buying new lorries they spent the money to employ someone to look at the problem, [who diagnosed exactly what the staff had been saying, “you need new trucks”] So now where is the money to buy the trucks going to come from to resolve the problem ?

The battery on electric fire trucks here is “window dressing”. A good size diesel generator “range extender” dies most of the heavy work long term. Most fire trucks are hand assembled from pre made subassemblies like axles, engines, pumps, transfer cases, transmissions. Thus they often fail in the first months. I was a paid on call fire fighter first 12 years. In the two departments I was a part of new deliveries were “trialed”, trained with and tested heavily before entering service. Typical example of early failures, on a new delivery truck the parking brake release air line was wrongly routed through a suspension pinch point. Going down the road that air line was severed, parking brakes came on and system air pressure dropped. We halted on the side of the road and called the department’s mobile mechanic. It was about a 15 minute fix.

When one thinks about a Firetruck or any emergency service vehicle, it doesn't take very long to realize that driving to the scene of something like a fire, is not the only thing a vehicle has to do. It has to have flashing emergency lights and a siren during the trip. It has to have lights on at the scene. It has to operate water pumps and it could easily be required to do this for many hours or even days for a single event. In the recent past, Canada had huge brush fires that went on for months. How would an EV firetruck cope with demands like that using only lithium battery packs regardless of weather and rate of demand for power? An EV firetruck would also have to monitor how much power it has remaining so it has enough to get back to the charging station. Does anyone know how these EV firetrucks work? Do they also have fossil fuel powered generators and pumps? If they do, then having them use batteries for mobility makes even less sense.

The UK government are trying to force an all EV Ambulance service , what could possibly go wrong with that idea ?!
@naphackDT
@naphackDT 3 месяца назад
Ambulance is not nearly as bad as firetruck. Since you are gonna have to clean out the vehicle after most trips anyway, you can just charge it while you are doing that. Also, it's mostly driving and while the vehicle does have quite some weight to it, it's not that heavy. If you really wanted to do it, you could, it's just that there isn't much reason as it would be way more economical to stick to diesel. Now, firetrucks, on the other hand, are a complete nonstarter. You have to haul around way more mass, like at least a cubic meter of water, for starters, and once you are on site, you have to power all the pumps with your batteries, which will quickly run out if it's a longer operation. Also, the additional mass of the batteries might push your vehicle against certain mass limits, making it impossible to cross certain bridges. Vehicles are usually optimized to meet certain thresholds and since they can't really reduce the equipment carried by the vehicle, they are definitely gonna have a heavier vehicle.

Recently I read an article here in Alberta, Canada concerning electric transit buses. Several years ago when I was living in Edmonton , the city was piloting some BYD electric transit buses. They were satisfied with their shorter route performance, so they purchased several more. Since then, which I am quite sure that there was a lot of political pressure from the US government, it was decided to purchase a much larger number of US made electric buses. These buses turned out to be nothing but junk and within a very short period of time more than half of the busses have broken down and are out of service with availability of replacement parts being a big concern. The city recently filed an $82 M claim against the manufacturer, Proterra, which is going bankrupt and facing a list of nearly 1300 claims against them. It is hard to fathom the level of incompetence.

100km range! I can just imagine how great that would be for Rural and Country Fire Brigades and SES units in Australia where units often travel long distances, including at times interstate. "Sorry need to stop and recharge for 20-40 minutes". Meanwhile the Diesel and Petrol units go another 500km before stopping to spend 10 minutes refueling.

Figure an actual 50km range since it has to get back to the station.

They could carry generators with them. Even better generators powered by the batteries, or solar panels. Something bad is in the drinking water, I think.
@kathyyoung1774
@kathyyoung1774 3 месяца назад
@@sammyjimsmith6100 Solar panels aren't any use at night, and it would take a HUGE array of them to be useful in the daytime. The generators powered by batteries would run down fast. That means more batteries, more strip mining of lithium by children in Asia. This is putting layer upon layer of "rescues" on top of a system that doesn't work well. Diesel fire engines run really, really well and efficiently. They do not need to be replaced.

Totally AGREE about ! Not only about emergency vehicles being EV'd, but EV's in general. Imagine an ambulance racing to a hospital with a patient suffering possible heart attack and THEN? "Sorry Mate! We need to charge the battery! We're running out of juice!"

Fire service is paid for by residents of the city of Vancouver via property taxes. Vancouver city has a history of weird stuff like bike lanes no one uses in the downtown and planting a grass roof on the convention center. Fortunately, metro Vancouver doesn't share a lot of stuff, the main exception being transit.

A water tank in a fire truck? Who would have expected that?

Considering it was a leak in the water tank, the same fault would have sidelined a diesel fire truck so in this one instance I'm not sure it's fair to point the finger at it being an electric fire engine.

If they cant even get old tech like a tank manufactured correctly then what is the rest of it like? Also leaking water is not good where high voltages are present.

As the owner of a Tesla, I agree with this 100%. However, a leaky water tank had NOTHING to do with it being electric. NOTE: A small diesel generator can power/charge an electric vehicle while using far less fuel than a full sized engine.

I'm Canadian and I'm so discouraged and disillusioned by our out of control woke prime Minister. Electric emergency vehicles is the most ridiculous, impractical, craziness only an environmental nut job could believe is a good idea. Fire trucks can be on a scene for several hours, even days. Diesels can be easily refueled on-site in minutes. I hope and pray my municipality is smart enough not to by one of those white elephants. Sad thing is Canada is becoming a cesspool of socialism, wokeness, and environmental crazines. I love your posts, we need your voice of reason and reality. Keep up the great work

That water leak was a design feature and was there to keep the battery cool, or to help control the inevitable battery meltdown.. When people think if a Fire Truck they normally think of a truck that puts fires out, not to actually start the fires..

An acquaintance who is a firefighter in Canada, told me that they have a diesel generator to charge the truck, in case the intervention lasts more than an hour or two or if it is cold, yes it is the case in Canada, it's silly right.?.

That fire truck has an "energy backup system": A 3.0 Liter 300HP 6 Cylinder BMW Clean Diesel Engine. While that is comforting to know, it also means that truck isn't just hauling around these heavy batteries but a backup diesel engine too. As for the 100 km reach, I wonder if that was calculated with some actual firefighting included, or if after those 100 km you'd need the "energy backup system" to power the pumps.

the range and on scene work it sufficient for pretty much all ordinary shifts. As it was tested at some of the busiest stations in Germany the range extender kicked in less than once per month, to be precise 9 times in 13 months

Saving the environment is apparently a higher priority than saving the citizens of Vancouver. I would think the smoke from the fires they fail to extinguish, because the trucks can't get there, is worse than the exhaust the older trucks would have produced.
