This was from the 1969 debut album, "The Sun, The Wind and Other Things" which was a poke at The Cowsill's album, " The Rain, The Park and Other Things". A great tune, with great instrumentation, including the clavioline for the Balkan quality and a groovy upbeat melody. It sold over 1 million copies and received a gold disc. Yes, it was a big hit. And the harpsichord was a trendy addition to pop music at that time . . . not in a creepy way, but more in a funky old-timey way.

talk about good timing. I just heard this song on the AM car radio the other day while running an errand. I didn't have my cell phone on me to look it up. and when I got back home I tried to look up the lyrics on the internet but could quite remember the correct lyrics so I couldnt fine it. At the time this group was making wonderful music there was another group called Marmalade making similar wonderful music as well. I would get them confused at times, but I do know they are completely different groups. Both had catchy melodies with great lead singer vocals and good harmonies as well.
Jack Wild (Artful Dodger in “Oliver” and Jimmy in “H R Puf’n’Stuf”😢 sang this song on one of his albums. That is how I first heard this song over 50 years ago. This was so much fun to hear another’s version. Thanks for sharing!
Another one of the great English pop/rock group from the 60's. "Hitchin' A Ride" & "Early In The Morning" were their 2 biggest hits. They had some other songs but not with as much success such as "I Live For The Sun", "Come Tomorrow", "Carolina's Coming Home", "Summer Morning" etc.
I'm not sure how this band did anywhere else, but in America these guys had 2 hits, this song and "Hitching a Ride." I believe they were from the UK so maybe they had more success there.
