Great video, thank you! I bought a kit that included a steel idler to replace the plastic one. When I removed the engine mount I found it already had a steel one. My car is a 67 plate registered in dec 2017 and I've owned it from 3k miles and 9mnth old so this was it's first cambelt change at 62k miles. I'm guessing Vauxhall have eventually realised that they have a problem. The most wear was on the tensioner but it wasn't yet at a catastrophic state. Following your video it was a straightforward job.
Recheck belt fitment. There should be timing lines on new belt, which match up with timing marks on crank sprocket, fuel pump sprocket and cam sprocket as shown at time index 20:09 in video.
Hi Paul, thanks for the video. Not specifically related but you obviously know these engines, my Zafira stopped when leaving home one morning , traveling at less than 10mph suddenly slowed to a halt. Vauxhall investigation found one of the cams had sheared off. I would welcome your advice... I'm trying to avoid doing an engine swap they everywhere seems to recommend now. Thanks
Me personally. i would remove cylinder head to investigate why one of the cams sheared. Checking for valve contact with pistons, and if timing belt has snap or jumped a few teeth., Or cam seizing in bearing journals in cylinder head due to low oi pressure. Once you know the cause and the damage, you can then work out if it can be repaired. If cost effective to repair or replace engine.
When the service manual says changing timing belt every 150,000 km, is it safe to assume that the pulleys will be changed also? I hope the workshops know that it should be belt + pulleys change and not belt alone.
It's due to experience, if you never done one before, use engine locking kit ! Most new timing belts, now have lines on the belt, which correspond with timing marks on sprockets/pulleys

@@PaulsTechChannel what about the water pump? Do you reckon I can skip its replacement on the first belt change? Opel quoted me 1800€ (belt, pulleys, screws and water pump) to do the job, they charged 450€ for the water pump alone 😱 There seem to be 2 models out there for the pump, with and without temperature sensor, I don’t know which one fits this engine.
