Truly appreciate the video man, good job! I have one question though, I’ve read online that it is recommended to replace the crankshaft pulley on these engines as they are prone to break and then the crankshaft spins freely and potentially killing the engine. Could you give any input on this please? A friend has the A20DTE engine that I was planning on changing the timing belt on.👍🏼

Hi mate. I did this following your video about 8 months ago. Have done numerous other timing belts before without issues . Today had to get recovered by the AA because of overheating, they believe the tensioner has collapsed. Very very lucky and engine is fine and still timed!! Is a dodgy tensioner something you’ve come across? I used a Borg and Beck timing belt kit.
@JamesEdwards860
@JamesEdwards860 Год назад
Update : wasn’t the tensioner. Garage said it was the water pump seized. Still unsure though. My theory is that the water pump seized and the additional friction on the belt caused excess heat and melted the idler pulley as half of the idler pulley has melted away. Does this sound feasible? Have you known a water pump to seize after 6000 miles?
@diydaly
@diydaly Год назад
Yeah but strange that! before you added this I was Gona say ive has a few tensioners fail.. thats why always the gates kits.. I think the main reason for them failing is if they rant tensioned correctly thought, before gates bought out there bulletin you would pry against the tensioner wheel not the lug.. Ive not had a WP fail in that time but could be possible
@JamesEdwards860
@JamesEdwards860 Год назад
@@diydaly Thanks , yeah bit of an odd one. Tensioner apparently was fine; had to get a garage to do it for me as just wouldn’t have time to do it myself at the moment. Water pump was seized solid, which I’m guessing the friction heated up the belt and melted 90% of the idler pulley away! I think another 30’seconds of running the engine would’ve been toast. My lucky day!

The water pump had gone on my 06 1.9 150 Vectra and I was thinking about scrapping it, but I bought the Gates kit and in the few days after Christmas, on the driveway between the torrential rain, I completed the job. Have never done a timing belt before but your video made the job simple. You explained everything well, showed things in detail and took your time. Thank you for this video, succesfully changed my belt this morning. Just one thing - after lining it up and marking the timing, I removed the belt. Upon removing the belt the cam pully spun round, so it was almost as though the location of the markings put it right at the top (or bottom?) of its stroke, meaning that it was quite tricky to hold it where it needed to be to keep the timing whilst installing the new belt. Aside from using a locking tool/kit, is there anything I could've done differently to stop this from happening?
@diydaly

8 mm I just found out. There is also an interesting part on the the engine mount which attaches to the engine. The top left bolt goes through a hollow shaft which can extend. It seems it is meant for some sort of adjustment, altough I am not sure. I put the mount back to the engine putting all the other bolts back in, leaving the top left for last. Subsequently I extended the shaft in the top left bolt position out (turning right) till it touches the engine. After that I put the bolt back in. But the timing belt is on, the waterpump in and the aux belt done. Thanks again!

When tightening the tensioner I seen someone say it’s meant to be between the two lines. Are you sure it’s up to the dot?

Coming from an admittedly Volkswagen heavy experience set, this engine seems like an absolute engineering mess: the timing belt routing with the injection pump way over there, the tensioner... It's all very illogical. The 1.7 is no better with it's two sprockets side by side at the bottom. One of the few engines I've looked at and thought "what the fuuu?". What are your thoughts as a mechanic, do these engines make up for it by being easy to work on or something? Cheers!
@diydaly
@diydaly Год назад
Haha yeah I suppose if your used to a lot of Vag engine it does look abit odd! I’ve never thought of it like that tbh.. they do make up for it being easy to work on though! All these a doddle to do with loads off access 👍

Very helpful. did mine yesterday. watched this twice and made 2 pages of A4 notes before heading to the drive with tools and timing belt kit. Funnily enough, I made the same mistake by not realising there were two different Aux belt options and have the longer 1900mm one now going on ebay ! This was so good guidance - all the bolt head sizes perfect and the tensioner explanation saved so much head scratching. Thanks for uploading this.

As already stated this is one of the best videos on this. Although I would just like to add that the camshaft on the Mk1 models (the A20DTH engine) will 'flip' a few degrees out of position when the old belt is removed, but this is not a disaster - & although special locating tools are advised the camshaft can be held back into position using a 20mm socket & T bar. The cam belt tensioner did take a few attempts to 'set' to the correct position - mainly due to the limited access. Lastly the upper and lower idlers mentioned in the video: the upper one is for the cam belt (50NM) the lower one is on the outside for the auxiliary drive/alternator belt (20NM). Not a bad job to do - & taking my time it took around 7 hours.

The camshaft moved out of position compared to my markings. When moving the camshaft to line up it keeps springing out of position. How do i solve this problem?
@tamahaac
@tamahaac Год назад
@@matthewlloyd7332 Hi Matthew. I did cover this - but just to add, if the camshaft drive needs holding in position, I found holding it 'in line' with a 20mm socket on the T bar did the trick. Although this can be awkward on your own so another pair of hands would definitely help while fitting the cambelt. The crankshaft & fuel pump drive should not move or be an issue. When the cambelt is fitted rotate the crank at least twice to ensure everything is still in line with your original markings - & for the tensioner to settle. Anyway I hope this clears things up - & good luck.

Brilliant demonstration. However I do have one question regarding the tensioner. I've heard some say that the arrow should line up in the centre of the slider but you've mentioned that the arrow go farther and should line up with the small circular cut out. Could you please clarify which is correct... tx

Nice video! Have you ever come across one of these jumping 2 teeth on the timing? It's happened to me twice now and the belt has been tensioned correctly and still has correct tension when it skips. Mine is the biturbo which has a smaller fuel pump pulley and an additional small guide pulley up the top which is the upper and lower pulley you mentioned
