I’m super hype about this lens. I’ve been looking for a compact anamorphic setup. I eventually just want a smaller setup and get rid of my bigger equipment and use this stuff for my passion projects.
This lens comes really close to what seems a good option to me. It's a single system and it's somewhat compact. It's a bit on the expensive end, but comes with a case. I am now waiting for Laowa to deliver their 27mm "Nanomorph" which might directly compete with the Vazen 28mm and could be more affordable
Where did you hear that the Vazen 28mm uses a variable astigmatizer? Can you see the cylinders rotate as you focus? Does the lens breath vertically like Panavision or Todd-Ao lenses do? The counter-rotating cylinders inside such optics are bitch to align precisely, which is why almost everyone went toward variable diopters. I wonder how Vazen managed to fit that kind of tech into a lens so small and so cheap.
Great review! Differences in build aside, do you think the 40mm vazen and the 28mm would pair well together say, for a narrative feature film project? Mostly considering image quality and characteristics. I am looking at getting these two lenses for my z cam e2.
Hey Tito, Can you perform a side by side image comparison of the 28mm and 40mm? I know the builds are different but In your opinion will the images match?
Yesss so hyped you got to review this (: just wish vazen were open to other mount choices.. was hoping to pair this with Zcam FF 6k, I can dream i suppose lmao
There is a certain look I've noticed in movies that were filmed with anamorphic lenses. In rack focus shots, when the focus is changing, everything kind of distorts, and things that are out of focus seem more stretched, and when the come into focus they become normal. Does this lens have that effect? Do you know what causes that effect?
@@AnamorphicOnABudget Thanks for the answer! I would be happy if you would test SLR Magic 35mm T2.4 2X anamorphic Lens for MFT and compare the image quality with Vazen 28mm T2.2 1.8X Anamorphic Lens for MFT. Both are Chinese and have about the same price. I hope that the quarantine is soon over. Best wishes from Germany :-)
Hello Tito, Great video as usual !!! What you explain about the different conception about the focus is very interesting ! Do you have any documentations or optics lessons to share about this? Thanks in advance !
Thanks for doing this! It didn't occur to us about the focusing mechanism difference resulting in this superbly compact lens. Would be great if they re did the original 40mm! BTW how did u adapt MFT to E mount?
I didn't have good enough equipment to say it works or it doesn't for sure. Hence, inconclusive. It looked like a yes at times, and no other times. I have not done more tests.
Tito Ferradans I was gonna say... seemed unlikely they were using the Panavision method, as any lens using that method has a steep price premium. The movement of astigmatisers is minuscule and precise, requiring the very best mechanics and tuning. Regardless, it looks like whatever method they’ve chosen works wonders on size, weight and focus breathing, which are the weak spots of projection adapters. I dare say my Kowa 16-H still goes juuust a touch wider, but the 1.8X is very welcome, and the front looks primed for a nice big WA converter. The 28mm will go straight in my shopping cart just as soon as they announce more lenses in the set with this same focus mechanism... there’s NO way I want a set with that unwieldy 40mm.
@@AnamorphicOnABudget I'm looking forward then. :) In the meanwhile, my Sirui lens is stuck at customs-quarantine, and things like Vazen or similar brands are waiting for better times and bigger budgets. But on the other hand, this period gives us time to research, find new solutions and ways which were ignored in better days. We can truly reinvent ourselves, like phoenix rising from the ashes. I wish you all the best, Tito, your channel is a gold mine for such exploration :) Yours, Marjan Krebelj
Yeah when I first heard about this lens coming out I could tell it was going to be a great change. I hope we see more like this, love the look in the aesthetics of such a wide focal length! my big hesitation with purchasing these Vazen lenses stems from the MFT coverage and how likely I will be using such a lens 10 years from now. Everything else about it is exciting! I don’t care about the letters or the look of it or that it’s inconsistent with the 40 mm, my biggest hold up is the coverage and how confident I am I will get at least a decade out of this lens
@@rainzhao2000 I have lomo s35 anamorphic and spherical cine lenses and sure, speedboosting is an option, but lately full frame is looking nicer and nicer. Right now the Xelmus lenses, based on the gottschalk counter-rotating astigmatizer design, catch my eye the most. I'll have to see, as the lenses I have now have lasted me 10+ years and I'd like any future glass purchases to match the sensor needs I'll have 10+ years from now
It's probably just because it's as wide as it is, but I’m not seeing the vertically stretched bokeh in the background of the open field footage. The background looking stretched while foreground looks much less so is what creates the 3dimensional depth I’m looking for that distinguishes anamorphic imagery from spherical/aspherical images. I’m starting to think Richard Gale has the better solution, even though it’s anamorfaking , by adding a spherical reducing optical element in front of the lens allowing a wider field of view while maintaining the depth of field properties/bokeh of the longer focal length. I only wish he could bring his pricing down or get a mid sized optics company to back his design so the prices could be lowered.
Hey Tito, I saw on cammackey's channel that vazen is releasing the 28mm t2.2 for Canon RF. Does the lens project an image circle large enough to cover s35? If so, would it be possible adapt that lens via a custom 3d model + cnc machined mount swap to Fuji X mount? considering that RF flange is 20mm while FX is 17.7mm. I'm just wondering if it's theoretically a good idea as it's something I'm interested in DIYing.
Great question. I don't know. Flange work has to be super accurate, so if you have access to the equipment, it could be doable. I don't think the 28mm covers S35, it's just under it, requiring a bit of crop.
Cool lens and review Tito! Are you planning to do a vid like for the Sirui? Using a WA adapter for even wider shots and the teleconverter mode for your tele shots...
It’s a shame that manufacturers keep going after Micro 4/3 when the first thing a lot of filmmakers do with Micro 4/3 cameras is get speed boosters to match S35 and FF cameras. Could they adapt these to cover S35 at least?
If they made this lens for a s35 or ff camera system the lens would cost closer to 10k and it would be a very heavy lens; if you want a cheap anamorphic lens buy one for your phone for under $200
@@wakkowarner8810 It doesn’t have to, Laowa, SLR Magic, and Great Joy are showing that there’s a lot of play in pricing for anamorphics going on with all their S35 and FF anamorphic releases. Also, I’m not concerned about price, I’m concerned that there’s a lot of emphasis on specialty lenses and adapters being made only for Micro 4/3 when clearly only a slight bit of effort is needed to make these S35 and FF compatible. For whatever reason, the Micro 4/3 format is losing support all around and there’s a stagnant level of innovation going on when Sharp showed that an 8K capable Micro 4/3 camera could have been ready years ago. Yeah, it’s nice that there is a 4:3 option on the GH5/GH6 but some S35/FF cameras have that now too along with dedicated anamorphic modes and external monitors have several desqueeze options these days so there’s no need to keep at Micro 4/3 only products like this.
does anyone have this lens available to rent? Vazen 28 mm T2.2 1.8x anamorphic MFT, do you happen to own one or know someone who does? I need for a job in LA this monday!
doesn't look like this lens can focus sharply at distances beyond 30 feet... looks pretty bad unfortunately. Is this a production lens in this video or prototype??
I just can't imagine paying over $4000 CAD for a lens that needs to be used at +T/4 for anything usable at which is useless. Doesn't even have a set. Hardly an investment or plan.
