Vector 3: Actual reason why right pedal disconnects

Noticed there's a right 1/4 mm gap between the housing and the "metal spindle nut" on my right pedal. That makes all moving parts be shifted by roughly 1/4 mm. This causes two problems:
1. The contact board rubs against casing (and that is why right pedal doesn't rotate as freely as left)
2. The contact board is now 1/4 mm deeper inside than it should be. That is why the battery (and pedal) disconnections are frequent.

I had the exact problem with my right sensing pedal (of my vector 3). I tried to hack the issue placing a wedge underneath the battery contact spring, which partially resolved the issue. But wasn’t a long lasting solution. I have tried using the 2nd generation battery holder and battery cap. That didn’t do the job either. After I have received the email,regarding the 3rd Gen battery caps/holders, I have contacted Garmin support, explained the issue of the metal piece having a gap between the pedal body, exactly as described on the video above. The company sent me a new right sensing pedal body, and a new pair (3rd generation) of battery carrier / cap. I essentially replaced everything with the exception of the spindle. And finally everything is working, so far with no issues (10 rides about 300 miles). I was really impressed with the Garmin costumer support line, who are actually working remotely at home due to Covid-19. It was no issue that the factory warranty was expired by almost 1.5 years.

Very good to hear that Cenk. I only bought my pedals in March and it is my left hand pedal that as stopped communicating. I chose the Garmin pedals because Garmin's customer service has always been so good. I have been waiting for the new battery caps for more than 3 weeks now and really hope that when they arrive my problems will go away. They are struggling to receive and ship parts because they must be running on a really stripped down staff. I can live with my problems, was just hunting on here for any work-arounds.

Nice mate! Always appreciate people like you who take the trouble to prove your point thoroughly. I have the vector 3 dual and I had 1 change for a new one. The new one, I still notice drops every now and then. After watching your, Shane M and other's videos, I think I need to do a check on my pedals again. Thank you sir!

I've got 2 sets of these Garmin vector 3 pedals and they both have the same issue! So frustrating that Garmin doesn't even care that these expensive power meters are useless.

ATTENTION: you can easily re-tighten that metal bearing cap with an improvised ultra wide screwdriver or bent-needle-nose pliers. Worst case, just use big mouth pliers. Left pedal has normal thread, right pedal reverse, same as the spindle lock nuts. Mine got both loose after about 5000km of use. Luckily I discovered the tight left pedal before the pressure could do any damage to the battery system.

The "right sensor missing" is absolutely not issue of the battery housing, But of releasing the screw inside of the pedal. I think i have one of the First pedals, and it happens to me too.

Seems to always be the right pedal. The cartridge must not be reverse-threaded, so it is slowly working itself loose from the pedal body through mechanical precession.

I just had the same thing on my right pedal. The GAP. I contacted Garmin Service and they are replacing my pedals. It's very frustrating that such an expensive, 3rd-generation product, can still fail like this, but at least they are willing to deal with this on the back-end of the transaction through customer service. Tightening it per the service advisory didn't address it. :(

I can’t emphasize the importance of having the 12mm socket and a torque wrench adjustable to 10 nm’s, to undo and tighten the spindle nut. If you don’t have these tools don’t even try to maintain the pedal.

Garmin released a service advisory that shows how to correctly torque the pedal and remove the gap.

I still have problems with mine. The last pair got replaced 6 months ago and have failed again
@temka1984
@temka1984 3 года назад
After many replacements I think Garmin has finally nailed it. You need last generation battery doors (the ones that have 4 electric contact points) that you can obtain from Garmin. Also you must use 1 thicker battery (instead of 2 thinner batteries). Thing is, batteries swell and destroy the contact points by applying excessive pressure. A single (thicker) battery swells less and the updated doors handle the issue better. Also you should apply mineral oil on all contact points when replacing the batteries. All this makes it work like charm. Good luck!

I have the same problem . I alreday change the first Ones with the warranty and my second pair have he same problem. Believe me.. the quality of this pedals is horrible. I couldn’t be more dissapointed. They produced drops and awkward info on every parameter they récord. If you need a power meter go elsewhere. Take your time and read more reviews of real users. Not the people that garmin sponsored to say good things about te worst garmin Device ever.

Hi, does the right pedal work alone or does it only work paired with the left one?
@vrbkoo

Pls, i have firstly managed to tighten the gap with pair of "Universal" pliers. But it released soon. Than i realized, There are 4 holes around the pedal spindle, so i put hex key (size3) in one of the holes and spin the pedal to tighten the gap. I could do this even during a ride - stop for a while when "right pedal is missing" message appeared, tighten the pedal and went on. Then it happened to loosen twice a ride, so i put firstly toothpaste, Then loctite in the gap. But the thread is in the middle of the pedal, so it had no sense- the gap had no thread. Finally i had to remove the hole pedal spindle following the original garmin pedal cleaning video ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z1X3ztDNL6k.html) and just after that i could unscrew the spindle totally to put the "thread lock" to the thread, not on the a is only (Pls remember, that right pedal has the reverse screw!). ThenI have put the toothpaste all along the thread inside the pedal. ( I use toothpaste instead of threadlock) Now it should be ok.

The design is correct, however the main problem is the assembly processes are not QA/test before ship to customers. Garmin should have a better QA process.

Don't buy Garmin - Very B.A.D. Buy PowerTap Pedals! I've had every problem possible with Vector 3. (takes 10days to get new ones and they work for about 1-2 battery changes - 2months - then more ISSUES. Very BAD.)

Why Powertap? I'd say Favero Assioma is the best pedal based power meter.

Worse design ever, the pedals are pure (expensive) rubbish. Batteries don't last, so every time you change them, you face the problem again (if you were lucky to "solve" it the last time). My pedals have the new cap, they don't have the gap, but the problem remains. I feel cheated.
