i like kikuchis music better, but i think this is a good example of how its better for z. kai needed more fast paced music. so even though i don't like yamamotos music as much, i think its better for kai.
The original is absolute GOAT when the actors were in their oratory prime. Now they are still amazing but much older, obviously that affects things. Still would prefer DBZ with the original actors even 90 years old (lol) than English dub. Horikawa is Prince Vegeta...Period.
@c4bb4g3 My other critism is that the Faulconer score never stopped playing , silence should be in some scenes , but Faulconer destroyed it , it just played non-stop . The Japanese score just fits DBZ , I am glad it was kept in the Mexican-Spanish dub (which is the best DBZ dub ever) . Also , Kikuchi uses real instruments .
I agree. What really pisses me off thought is when people say that the english dub is a disgrace to the japanese dub, and that it "offends" them. The show was made for Japanese culture (far different from American culture) and was brought to America. It was then modified for the American culture. And tread carefully on that "offended" status, because I and many other American DBZ fans are offended when you trample the version that we grew up watching.
I've got to agree with the poster of this video. The japanese actor was too jaded and comfortable during the redub. Probably from doing the voice for so many years. Chris Sabat had the same problem with his remaster redub. Fortunately, Chris did much better on his kai redub.
@SpartanForgeWorld300 The reason there is so much Gravel in his voice in Kai is because Ryo Horikawa has always been an avid smoker, and now he has a harder time with those screams and battlecries after 20 years of cigarettes I just hope he doesn't get cancer or something
All the old japanese voice actors in dragonball are all 50-80 old and some are dead, ryo is 52, they really kicked ass at that time the new once cant compare to them.
I love both Ryo Horikawa and Brian Drummond as Vegeta. They are, to me, Vegeta. Chris Sabat is great as well but he doesn’t hold a candle to “It’s Over 90000”/“You won’t escape my wrath!!” and the Japanese voice. Brian Drummond sounds the most similar to Ryo Horikawa while making the character his own (in a good way), while Ryo Horikawa just defines the character of Vegeta perfectly. I love both Ryo Horikawa’s Kai & Super take and his original take. He still is awesome as Vegeta either way, despite the fact that he smoked- he still is really convincing in the role that I can buy it as Vegeta’s voice.
@CaptainObvious0000 Akira Toriyama hand picked the voice. It's not a matter of "just getting used to it". There's a reason Goku sounds the way he does in the Japanese version and it does fit. You probably grew up on the English version so it sounds weird to you but when a lot fans get older they switch to the original Japanese version to experience the "real" DBZ. Once you've seen enough you'll understand why Akira Toriyama chose the voice and you'll have a whole new respect for DBZ.
In the original, you can still recognize Andromeda Shun... with a very different personality XD In Kai his voice is different already, but I think the raspiness suits Vegeta just fine.
@TheNaruz Kind of impossible considering he's been fired for 7 years because he tried to sue FUNimation for rights to GT Then stole credit from his composing team who wrote many of the song (Mike Lloyd Smith, Julius Dobos, Scott Morgan)
For me, the remastered Kai version is has more of a feeling to it.Not saying that the original is bad but remastered Kai has fill out some music parts that are quiet. However one bad thing about Kai Remastered is that some parts were removed unlike the original that is filled with a lot of good scenes.Kai Resmastered has good voice acting while the original has decent voice acting but they do have some great lines.
@EdTheBadass no, thats the thing, they didnt cut out the charging up, they cut out the action, thats what the filler was, the charging up and screaming is still in kai, at least, i havent seen any points where its been shorter
@ytfjordan That's because Vegeta is voiced by the same person, but you can notice a slightly deeper tone in his voice for Kai because his actor is in his 50's. now.
Practice makes perfect. After voicing scene after scene, you get used to the voice and get better at it. I'm sure all the voices f***ed up in the beginning and got better later on. Vegeta's included.
The only reason Kai is popular in the u.s is that the dub was very innacurate for Z and they improved it for Kai. If it hadn't been for that and people watched an accurate version of Z and then Kai, it would be much less popular. That's why Kai did horrible in Japan.
Uhh...Kai isn't popular in the USA. Not at all. Dbz had 61 million viewers in the early bus rc and it kept going up. Kai couldn't even get to 2 million viewers, ever. Also Kai isn't more consistent,it adds more issues. Stop regurgitating what trolls online say and research for yourself . Kai added plot holes z didn't have.
To be honest I like both versions, the music makes it reminiscent a Kung Fu showdown in the original while Kai is more upbeat and original, I think they both do the series justice.
@ParatrooperLirelou I totally agree with you, however there is another big criticism that everyone probably already noticed thanks to the vid's title itself: the voice. Even if Vegeta is dubbed by the same person (a good fact), Vegeta seems more agressive than calm and noble (in this extract) whereas in the original DBZ, he keep his calm voice and his scream seems... I dunno.. more legendary because of its resounding AND (of course) the music ^^
@BrerJackal The story may not be the deepest around, but it isn't really for children. Last I checked most children's shows shouldn't have one of the villains stabbing a main character through the chest with his horn. Then the villain licks the blood that drips onto his own face. Then bounces the main character up and down spraying blood all over his friend's faces until that main character is nearly dead. Dragonball Z was NOT made for children.
I would agree on you Sub is better then dub . But The DBZ dub funi did is really good i think the dbz dub cast is better for some characters like GOKU , Kirillen , And vegeta .But that's just me .
@CaveStoryAwesomeness because they are blinded by their nostalgia. Plus alot of the americans completely ignore the people who watched it with the original japanese soundtrack. So in their minds, the american is the original and not the other way around. They even think that the voice actors are crappy and changed, when they are the same actors (minus switches) just greatly improved. Kai is pretty much the best version on paper. Those who don't like it come up with the most ridiculous reasons
I don't know why people complain so much. If you like the original better, then watch the original. Some may like Kai better, other the original Japanese, other the Funimation american dub. To each his own. Besides, it's kind of normal that Ryo Horikawa sounds different, he's grown old and his voice naturally changed between the original and Kai.
@MrWeasley1 everyone can, its their job. Their voice are maint to be specific for a character type and they do vocal exercice to maintain their actual performance.
Definitely a thumbs up on your #3. Things like Frieza talking about speaking in his native language type bullshit is all you need to hear to know how much bullshit was thrown in Funimation's dub.
He's voiced by the same person who voiced him as a kid, they do it to show how Goku is innocent and still has the same personality as he did as a child and teenager. For Bardock I think it's just cause he looks like Goku and it's his dad so it makes their ties together even closer for Japanese audiences.
But Toriyama didn't want Goku sounding manly and 'badass' like the rest (heck there are some fully-grown men that sound boyish) besides Krillin is voiced by a female as well but no one really complains about that.
Cool video. I've been wondering what kai was like. I haven't watched this series in a while. I like that it keeps getting updated because it gives me a reason to watch it again. The manga is the best, but I enjoy watching the anime too.
Ok, having watched that I think both voices are good because they are well in tuned with the music. The original has calmer more slow paced music (sometimes even silence) so naturally the voice Vegeta has is more relaxed but powerful. In Dragon Ball Kai because the music is a lot more fast paced and the scenes are quicker his dialogue and monolgue is read out a lot faster. I think the more powerful a voice is the better but I honestly don't mind either one.
Think of the Japanese Kai as the "20th Anniversary" dub. DBZ aired in Japan in 1989, and DBZ Kai aired in japan in 2009. So that makes the 20th Anniversary of DBZ!
Agreed. Chris Sabat has come a long way voicing Vegeta. You can tell he's gotten much better by watching the Saiyan/Vegeta Saga redub and comparing it to his pre-Remastered DVD voice.
@DiamondCutterBang actually dbz's english dub did have swearing and blood in the uncut version. but yeah the japanese version is the best. but just saying, the english kai does have lots of swearing (more than the enlish Z) and the music is alright. and the scripts are translated better so they don't sound corny anymore. plus the acting is great.
Am I the only that likes the Japanese dub for Kai. Sure it's not as good as the original but there is spots in kai where the japanese dub is better imo. Like Goku turning ssj or when Trunks vs Perfect cell.
I've seen that video (many times in the past) but I still stand by what I say. At least she actually emotes unlike Sean Schemeal did for most of DBZ, who tried to make Goku sound like some stereotypical 'cool' hero.
@startmirca I know this comes down to opinion, but I really don't see how Faulconer's score is generic and uninspired. I think it's the complete opposite. His uses a wider range of scale choices and dynamics. I find the Japanese score to be rather monochromatic and stale.
Never watched it before but Dragonball Z has the best fillers in the anime universe. Extended Battles, example the Vegeta(Majin Super Saiyan 2) vs Goku(Super Saiyan 2) the battle in which everyone was anticipating but was cut short in the manga :( But was brought into reality in Anime :D
@Eamon His voice is quite significant. Very noticeable. I love the old audio, It's classic. Filler may have stretched it out while Toriyama-sensei was writing the manga, but sensei himself worked on filler. He says in an article that he "intended" to leave it up to the anime staff, but then he decided to give advice when he felt it was necessary. Toriyama-sensei hasn't said anything is canon. I wouldn't be surprised if he thought that the word "canon" pertained only to scripture and literature.
I guess if I compared Vegeta's over the top, cartoony villain voice to the calm, measured (usually) voice of Bejita, I might say that he was emotionless too. Bejita speaks like you would expect royalty to speak; it might have something to do with the fact that he's a prince. As for Goku, he sounds like a child (as a Japanese voice Goku hater pointed out), because he IS a child at heart, despite his abilities and experiences. Be careful about judging Anime based on Anime dubs.
@DarkBlitzkrieg46 I believe this also applies to the Funimation dub as well. What I loved about it was not solely because I am born and raise in the US. It is simply because it was an offshoot that was unique enough to be liked by another country.
@SergeantPepper99 Well it was recorded in Mono, so practically everything sound (Voice acting, Music, Sound effects) are all clomped together, making it sound a little static
