is it me? or manufacturers don't want you to know quickly and accurately how much you can tow so you end up busting all kinds of parts?

Not simple to know what a vehicle can tow if you don't have the manual, this was a very helpful video that really helps clarify

Front GAWR, Rear GAWR - Gross axle weight rating Tire loading - total weight you can add to the vehicle GCWR - maximum that the vehicle, anything in it, and anything attached to it can weigh GTWR - max tow rating (with vehicle empty and only the driver inside).

What about GAWR? I know it's Gross Axle Weight Rating, but that includes the weight of the car? For example my truck has in the door sticker that my GAWR is 3800 should I then subtract the wight of the truck and cargo and fuel and all that?

where do you find the friggin curb weight? I’m trying to jack up cars and need to know which ones my jack can lift.

IF MY TRUCK GVWR IS 7000 AND THAT INCLUDES EVERYTHING INCLUDING HITCH WEIGHT.... AND MY TRAILER DRY WEIGHT IS 6400 DO I ADD THESE TWO TOGETHER?... MY MAX TOWING CAP ON MY TRUCK IS 13200???

So, I can't locate the GCWR for my vehicle anywhere... it's not in the owner's manual, it's not on a sticker, it's not on some website or chat on the web. I've come across many, many chats and forums where other people are also trying to find it, but to no avail. NOBODY KNOWS!!! Is there a way I can estimate it?

The 1750 Is that the combined weight with the truck and the trailer?

It's simple: a Dodge/Chevy1500 Truck can HAUL 1,500 pounds MAX and the manufacturer allow 5,000 trailer with it... OR it can TOW 10,000 pounds MAX and the manufacturer allow 500 pounds of cargo to go with...BUT NOT BOTH (give or take 1-2k pounds for cab,, bed gear ratio, drivetrain/powertrain configurations). If you do both you are well over the GCWR

the combined front and rear max axle weight is much higher than the GVWR. Why? seems like an obvious thing to clarify in the video.

All this vehicle weight stuff is about as simple & straightforward as your yearly Federal Tax return.

Is all that combine is the empty weight

So I have a 4Runner with a curb weight of 4750. GVWR of 6300. GCWR of 11,300. Cargo is 835. So would I be correct if I subtract 6300 from 11300 to get the total I can safely tow? somehow tongue weight comes into play. hmmm... confusing.

2016 F350 Crew Cab Long Bed Dual wheel 4X4 3.73 Axle . Published GCVR is 32,100. Publish Max fifth wheel towing Capacity is 23,500. my truck weighs 8786 from door sticker ( GVWR 14000 maximum paylod capacity from sticker 5314). 23500 +8786 = 32,386 which is over the GCVR I would have to take the bumper off and let the truck drive itself not to be violation the published weights if pulling maximum published fifth wheel weight . Can someone explain this to me.

So we have a 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 5.3L V8 Crew Cab 2WD. We are wanting to get a travel trailer and trying to determine how much weight we can pull. Our specs from the sticker on the door of our truck. Curb Wt=4982, GVWR= 6900, GCWR=15000. So what we figured was our Gross Vehicl Wt= Vehicle 4982+Passengers 500+fuel 144+Cargo 200= 5826 so we are good and under our GVWR of 6900. So does this mean that if I subtract my GVW of 5826 from the GCWR of 15000 which comes out to 9174. Is that the max weight I can tow? The trailer I want to purchase has a dry weight of 7069lbs and a GVWR 8815.

Thanks. This video helps me understand GV, GC, GTWR, Xyz, etc in preparation for my CDL written test. One thing is for sure, folks, Federal Agencies such as DOT or TSA do not make things easy for the public to understand as to ensue our lives safer. GCWR should be noted at our vehicular door jams instead of the owners' manual. Washington is full of overpaid and political appointed Number Crunchers wasting our hard-earned tax money. Incidentally deleting the music from this video would calm our anxiety in learning, Mr.Hall.

The actual weight of the truck + the actual payload weight + the actual trailer weight = Combined Vehicle Weight. Is that correct? My Trucks GCVWR is 10,000 lbs The Truck weight - 6,500 lbs The Payload weight - 3,000 lbs The Trailer weight - 5,700 lbs Over the GCVWR (- 5,200 lbs) is that correct?

The manufacturers up until very recently have made this stuff stupidly hard to figure out. For example, I just got a used '17 Ford F-350 SRW. I've looked at probably 3 different PDFs direct from Ford about what ratings my truck has, and they all conflict. One says I should be able to tow 20,600 5th wheel/gooseneck with my GVWR rating; another PDF from the same year says I barely touch 17,000. Without having officially weighed the truck empty with just me and fuel, I know what it says on the door jamb for GVWR, GAWRs, and payload. I'll thumb through my manual again to try and find the "official" GCWR, but seriously, all this looking for what should be SUPER easy to find (given that so many people think they can just go buy any 3/4 or 1-ton and have max payload) is absurd. It gets worse when you're trying to shop for a truck with the right amount of payload and towing, too, because sales guys know even less than you do and care about selling *A* truck, not a truck with exactly what you need. At least for 2019 and up, I can say good on ya to GM and FCA - GM for putting ALL the info on ONE sticker, in ONE place; and to FCA for their wicked awesome online VIN tool that tells you exactly what your specific truck can payload and tow AS OPTIONED, all the way back to 2009.

That's not always the case. Always check your owner's manual. My Toyota 4runner has a GCVWR of 11,300 lb and 5,000 lb of towing capacity and 6,300 lb of GVWR. Is this case my GCVW is combination of total trail weight with the vehicle fully loaded.

After listening to everything about payload and towing my next tow vehicle will be a f450,
