Today we shall be taking a look at our first adapter that enables Nikon F mount lenses to be mounted on Sony E-mount bodies and transfer AF, stabilization and EXIF data.
These types of adapters have been around for some time for Canon glass but Nikon proved to be more of a challenge and this is the first to do this successfully at least in part as we will see in this review.

Unfortunately, no AF motor \ screwdriver, thus only AF-S lenses can be used.

It is much more limited than just "AF-S / AF-P" lenses - watch the video - even among AF-S lenses, not everything works and some works very slowly - still there are not too many viable AF options for Nikon users with Sony cameras - and this is probably the best at the moment.

I saw this video recently. I have the Version 5. Very disappointed that simple mechanical mounting on both the Nikon mount and the Sony E mounts of the ADAPTER have too much play compared to the snug fit of the sony native lenses and the Nikon lenses on nikon bodies. The adapter noticeably moves when zooming or focusing the nikon lens. The exif data are available for both Nikon AFD and AFS lenses. Cannot use the nIKON AIs lenses, even as preset lens, as it locks the lens to it maximum aperture. The aperture ring rendered inoperable for one reason or another. I dont use the auto focus on my contrast detect sony body. I stopped using this clonky adapter cos I dont want it to destroy the electronic contact of my camera and lenses.

I have a canon rokinon lens. What if I use this on a sony? If I get an adapter for my sony e-mount, will my sony camera be compatible to the canon lens? What adapter do I need for the Canon rokinon lens to connect to my sony a6500?

Well, this is a NIKON to Sony mount so this is not relevant. Most rokinon lenses are manual so a simple adapter would do (but you will have to work 100% manual - no EXIF or aperture data).

Does this adapter work with no AF motor lenses (AF-D) or manual (Ai) lenses only reading and/or closing the diaphragm when shooting?

To be honest the version that we used was not that friendly to most older lenses - there are better and less expensive solutions for that - but maybe they changed something - there is a more modern version now (remember this is a 2017 video).

We were not really "disappointed" with the lens - it was just nice a bonus if you like if it did.

Very expensive lens adapter like the Metabones. I guess it's firmware will be full compatible with specific lenses.

What about filming? Does it change focus or track the subject?

Not the version that we used (not that Nikon F mount cameras are designed for video tracking anyway).

@@LensVid Okay dang, I invested in like $1000 worth of lenses and I didn't do enough research behind what camera I actually wanted to use (A7s III) and how important autofocus is for filming

@@BeanDar Although you can certainly MF for video, AF especially on Sony is great and could be very helpful. Best AF is typically with native glass although Tamron and Sigma have been getting closer with some of their new lenses. AF with adapted glass is nowhere near the same level. With Canon lenses and a good AF adapter it can be sort of OK in some situations, with Nikon glass and Nikon adaptors no (not from our experience at least).

We tested the older Sigma 10-20mm - it actually worked fairly well.

@@UseMyNoodleBaby Sure - just remember that there are two 10-20mm Sigma lenses (the 3.5 is the "newer" version we used the older one - not sure if the AF motor is different).

Great review, but how can you have a 1m target with the Sigma 100~400 which has an MFD of 1.5m?

It is a very good question - I honestly don't know, but I did. I will do a more in-depth look at this in our review of the 100-400mm in the next few weeks - it actually takes some pretty nice close ups.

We just finished testing the 100-400mm on the Nikon (we used the D7200 and not the D7500 which we are also testing due to the somewhat higher res), at any rate - the min focus distance at 100mm is about 1.5m or maybe 1.4m. Maybe with the adapter this gets shorter somewhat on the Sony - I have no other explanation.

I am not aware of any product like that (A-mount, in general, is pretty much dead since the A99 MKII).

The A7RII should work fine according to Vello (we tested using the A6500 which has better AF so keep this in mind) we didn't test the 200-500 with this adapter (although we did review it in the past but had to return it). The original A7? not very well I believe but I didn't test it with that camera (you need to check the Vello camera support page).

Sony has two - we haven't tested any of them so I can't attest to their quality.

Both of those adapters are very slow on the A9 with 500/4.0. Sony 500/4.0 is faster on ATG Sony SLT-A99 IIr than 1D X & D5.

I am not aware of anything else. Keep in mind these huge lenses have very large elements - they are probably not designed to be moved by these tiny adapters - this adapter will probably not work well with 500mm Nikon lenses either for the same reason.

Lensvid I really hope you are right sir, since I have all those expensive Nikon lenses waiting for a mirrorless experience, and so far I can't find a camera that allows me to do that. I almost bought and A9, even an a7rii, but then what..

I honestly don't know what will happen in terms of AF with the future mirrorless camera - that is the BIG ? - NIkon F-mount is very old - it was not designed to work in these ways - even the new AF-P lenses which are supposedly comparable to the Canon STM lenses don't work well when doing AF video on existing Nikon cameras - will they work better on a mirrorless Nikon - maybe - the flange distance will be different so some kind of an adapter will be required - how good it will be I don't know - again many open questions - and probably why Nikon didn't do this until now (Canon's mirrorless line also has issues and very limited line of native lenses - not sure how good it works with the Canon adapter and DSLR Canon lenses...).

Lensvid I hear you. I'm hoping that Nikon will find a solution, they'll have to eventually, since mirrorless seem to be the future (and present in some ways) Will they create a whole new lense line up exclusive for their mirrorless? I hope not! One question: as far as you know, with the right adapter, is the focus peeking accurate in manual mode with a Sony camera? (Using Nikon lenses?)

I don't care much for focus peeking - I prefer focus magnification which is amazing - the one thing missing from all DSLRs sadly. And focus magnification on Sony works great with the Vello adapter on all lenses (it is a camera feature, not a lens feature).

Sony could have built the A mount Series without changing the Mount size. they could have continued with the A mount BECAUSE the weight advantage of the E mount is fast disappearing because of quality lenses weight.......They did not have to screw us A mount users.......adopters for A mount lenses, not for me.......Did you notice the prices Sony wants for E mount lenses!....3rd party lens makers could clean up making A mount lenses, but they are not!.....like whats going on with their thinking?
